Serie B week 3 round-up

The dust will barely have settled on week 3 of the Serie B season before all eyes will quickly turn to the midweek action and for some of the clubs that may be a good thing depending on what sort of performance they gave this weekend.

This week we dispense with tradition and instead of first concentrating on the Friday night fixtures, we turn our eye to what surely has to be the match of weekday three at the Stadio Menti where Vicenza played host to Como.

Now usually in matches there is some sort of bedding in period where each side suss out there opposition. For Vicenza and Como however that was not the case as they went at each other hammer and tongs from the get go.

In fact we only had to wait until the second minute of the match and it came for the away side courtesy of Alessandro Sbaffo. The Biancorossi defense were caught dallying on the ball in a dangerous area and were duly robbed. The Lariani’s initial effort was then saved, but keeper Vigorito was unable to fully push the ball clear of the danger zone and the rebound was duly dispatched by an advancing Sbaffo.

The band of travelling supporters though did not have long to bask in their unlikely lead as on nine minutes the Lane were back on level terms. A cross from the left was met near the front post by Filip Raicevic who stole in front of his man to head across the goal and into the bottom right corner.

The goals kept flying in, in the early stages when on 15 minutes Como took back the lead when Gerardi scored from seemingly impossible tight angle after the Lariani’s indirect free from inside the area came back off the wall.

Fans were still trying to catch there breath when low and behold the hosts hit back with 24 minutes on the clock. Galano was the beneficiary of a lovely flick over the top, it looked as if he messed up his touch but recovered sufficiently to place it past Scuffet in the goal.

That was the way it stayed until the break. The second half was not as explosive, but no less entertaining as each side went for the win with Scuffet in good form in the goal. Vicenza thought they had secured that win when on 83 minutes Giacomelli manoeuvred his way into the box unmarked and pick up a through ball before sliding it into the bottom left corner.

Celebrations had barely died down when Como hit back for a well deserved point. Bessa was the hero when his shot from the edge of the area took a wild deflection flat footing Vigortio and sailing into the left corner. That was the way it finished, but there was still time for more drama as Como’s Sbaffo was given his marching orders in stoppage time.

Bari and Pescara met at the San Nicola it what was one of the more eagerly anticipated matches of the weekend. In truth however it failed to live up to the high expectations as the match finished in a disappointing nil all draw.

The Delfini though will probably be the happier of the two with the point after they came within a whisker of losing it, but the Galetti’s Francesco Valliani was unable to finish two guilt edge chances.

On Friday night Christian Panucci continued to confound his doubters (Mainly Me) when his Livorno side continue there 100% start to the season with a home win against Brescia.

It was the Biancoazzurri however who took the lead on 15 minutes when Geijo finished past Carlo Pinsoglio. The Amaranto hit back though on 32 minutes when Francesco Fedato continued his fine start to the season with a splendid effort from distance.

They would have to wait till past the hour mark to finally take the lead, this time it was Calabresi who provided the finishing touches. Daniele Vantaggiato then sealed the victory with a goal in the 73rd minute.

Also on Friday night Hernan Crespo tasted his first success in management when his Modena side finally got off the mark in more ways than one as Olivera’s 86 minute goal, the Gialloblu’s first of the season, helped them to their first three points of the season.

Meanwhile Cesena got back on track after last weeks surprise defeat to Virtus Entella. They were however determined not to let that happen again when they made the trip to play Ascoli.

They had to bide there time though and it wasn’t until the 58th minute that the took the lead. A free from wide on the right was wiped in by Camillo Ciano. The angle of the free would have suggested a cross but Ciano went for goal and this looked to have surprised keeper Lanni, who desperately scrambled to get across.

The ball however clipped the crossbar and ricocheted straight down off the line and away. The linesman and referee though duly handed the goal to the Seahorses much to the dismay of the Ascoli players.

On repeat viewing it does look as if the ball did just about cross the line. If there was doubt about that goal there was none about the second when Antonio Ragusa continued his excellent start to the season calmly slotting the ball home.

Ragusa then made it three on 79 minutes. Petagana pulled one back for Ascoli in the 92nd minute as it finished 3-1 to the away side.

Novara finally got over their early season hoodoo of conceding late goals as they beat Virtus Entella one-nil at the Piola. Manconi scoring on the hour mark after some terrible control by the Entella defense was pounced on him and punished emphatically.

Cagliari got back to winning ways beating Avellino in Sardinia. Goals from Marco Sau and Federico Melchiorri were enough to give the Rossoblu the win despite a late scare when Arini scored with six minutes to go for the Lupi.

In the remaining matches of week 3, Spezia won two-nil away to Salernitana. Perugia felt the wrath of their fans after they failed to break down a ten man Crotone side at the Curi. While Trapani and Virtus Lanciano drew one all in Sicily. Pro Vercelli and Latina also drew one all at the other Stadio Silvio Piola.

There is just enough time to digest all this weekends action before we are back at it again on Monday and then Tuesday night.
