Serie A Stock Watch

After Round 11 of Serie A fixtures, there are a few key players that are beginning to rise to the occasion, while some are declining. Who’s trending up and trending down?

Stock Up

Carlos Bacca, Striker, Milan: After a bit of a cold spell for the Colombian, he has begun to heat up. Bacca has been the explosive presence leading the resurgent Milan attack, having either a goal or assist during his last four matches. On Sunday, the 29-year old scored his 6th goal of the season in a 3-1 win away to Lazio and has been lethal during the team’s current three-match win streak.

Juan Cuadrado, Midfielder, Juventus: After his January move to Chelsea last season flopped, the ex-Fiorentina standout has found himself back making a difference in Italy with Juventus. Over the past three matches, the Colombian has begun to provide a much needed spark to a side in need of it, proving that his brief time in London does not define his ability as dynamic player. Over the weekend, the 27-year old came in off the bench in relief of Sami Khedira and provided an assist along with the late-winner against rival Torino.

Kalidou Koulibaly, Defender, Napoli: The 24-year old Senegalese international has been a stable member in Sarri’s backline this entire season. The defense has improved this season and Koulibaly has been at the heart of it all in recent weeks. Napoli has not conceded a goal over the past three matches and the improved structure under Sarri has helped players like Koulibaly stand out.

Stock Down

Geoffrey Kondogbia, Midfielder, Inter: The 22-year old prized Frenchman, after a big move from Monaco this summer, has found it a bit difficult to settle in with his new club Inter. Kondogbia played well early on in the season, most notably against Milan in the Derby della Madonnina but since then has struggled. Over the past few matches, his dip in performance has been masked by the fact that the Nerazzurri found a way to win against Roma and Bologna. Of course, this form is expected to be temporary as he is of good quality but Mancini, and many others, expect more.

Edin Dzeko, Striker, Roma: The Bosnian has not found the back of the net since late August in the 2-1 win over Juventus. Dzeko will be given the opportunity to break this funk but having just the one goal on the season through 11 rounds is a bit concerning for both the player and his club. It would have been ideal for the ex-Manchester City forward to break this slump by finding the back of the net against Inter, but it never happened.

Valter Birsa, Attacking Midfielder, Chievo Verona: After a sparkling start to his 2015/16 campaign, the Slovenian has cooled off dramatically along with his club. Birsa exploded in the first two weeks and we expected the Flying Donkeys to come down to Earth but with just 3 points in their last six matches, things don’t look to good at the moment.
