Matchday 21: Serie A Team of the Week

With matchday 21 behind us, we look back at a weekend that was in Serie A and highlight the eleven best players from the most recent games.

IFD Team of the Week (3-4-3) –

Goalkeeper –

Antonio Mirante (Bologna) – The Bologna shot-stopper was once again a standout performer for his side and kept a clean sheet against a tricky Sassuolo side. Over the past year, Mirante has made a serious case for himself as a dark horse for a spot on the national team.

Defenders –

Gonzalo Rodriguez (Fiorentina) – The Argentine defender returned to the lineup after missing some games from injury and boy did they miss him. In his return game against Torino, Rodriguez managed to score a goal and keep a clean sheet. With him back in the fold, Fiorentina can once again dream of an unlikely Scudetto.

Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus) – Chiellini was an absolute rock at the back against Roma in his side’s 1-0 win. Throughout the game, his crucial tackles and interceptions meant that Gianluigi Buffon didn’t have much to do.

Patrice Evra (Juventus) – Deployed at left wing back, Evra continued to show just why Massimiliano Allegri trusts him so much. While he isn’t as flashy as Alex Sandro, he deserves just as many plaudits as he barely puts a foot wrong every time he’s called upon as seen through his performance against Roma.

Midfielders –

Antonio Candreva (Lazio) – The 28-year-old was outstanding in his side’s come-from-behind 4-1 victory against Chievo notching two goals and one assist. With Lazio on the prowl for European football, performances like these are more than welcome from the Italian international.

Piotr Zielinski (Empoli) – The Polish midfielder put in a sublime performance against Milan on the weekend and was able to find the back of the net. In addition, his ability to dribble past men and vision caused all sorts of problems for Mihajlovic’s men.

Oscar Hiljemark (Palermo) – Another young midfielder who is thriving at a smaller Serie A club. Hiljemark has had an impressive season thus far and continued it with a man-of-the-match performance against Udinese with a goal and an assist. Will Zamparini sell him for an insane amount of profit in the future? I wouldn’t bet against it.

Giacomo Bonaventura (Milan) – The Milan man continues to prove just why he should be in Antonio Conte’s plans this summer with yet another goal in his side’s draw against Empoli. Since moving onto the wing, Bonaventura has thrived and has been one of Milan’s best performers.

Forwards –

Paulo Dybala (Juventus) – Would it really be a team of the week if this young man wasn’t part of it? Dybala scored the game-winning goal in a tight affair at the Juventus Stadium which now puts him on 14 goals in all competitions on the season. Another masterstroke by the bianconeri.

Kevin Lasagna (Carpi) – Down by one at the San Siro and in stoppage time, Kevin Lasagna steps up and buries one by Samir Handanovic to give his side a crucial point. While his name has brought a lot of spotlight on him, his performances in the past few weeks should not go unnoticed.

Massimo Maccarone (Empoli) – What kind of team of the week has Lasagna in it and not Maccarone? The 36-year-old rolled back the years once again and scored his ninth goal of the season in his side’s draw against Milan. One of the league’s more underrated players.
