Saponara: “Sarri Is Not A Homophobe, I Know Him.”

With Empoli set to take on Napoli this weekend, Riccardo Saponara leaped to the defence of his former manager Maurizio Sarri.

In an interview before the game, Saponara told reporters his thoughts on Sarri. He said,:

“Seeing Sarri again will be a great pleasure. I have a past relationship with him and I know him well. He has a hot temper and I’m sure he said that due to the heat of the moment; he is not a homophobe, some things have been said about him that shouldn’t have been said as they were caused by a moment of nervousness.”

On the possibility of him reuniting with Sarri at Napoli in the near future, Saponara said,:

“Of course I’d like that. Who wouldn’t? But even he knows that it’s not the right time to take me away from Empoli.”

When asked about the possibility about travelling to France for the Euros, the Empoli playmaker stated,:

“It’s a dream of mine but until now I haven’t received any callups. I know the possibility of me going are slim but it will depend on my work with Empoli. Right now, I can’t say what I would do if an offer came my way. I would evaluate it but my intention is to stay here until the end of the season.”
