Italian Football Daily’s collaboration with Italian journalist Damiano Giordano continues into the January transfer market window. Giordano gives his “state of the union” on how Italy’s major clubs are moving to bolster their squads in order to achieve their seasonal objectives
New year, new transfers: there’s one thing that never goes on vacation – calciomercato. Negotiations, meetings, big hopes and big disappointments will surely follow in this winter session. After this summer’s exploit, Serie A will meet expectations even in this month of January. So many names involved, with the canonical “big teams” who are likely to play the role of sellers, while the smaller teams – fighting to stave off relegation or achieve a Europa League berth – are likely to play the role of buyers.
Let’s start with league-leaders Inter: the nerazzurri‘s first objective is to sell. After a great start to the season, few observers expected such a positive impact of the newly acquired players and the confirmation of those who stayed with the club. Andrea Ranocchia seems to be destined to leave: Bologna has requested and obtained a straight loan from the Milanese club with a few remaining wrinkles to iron out like salary and the player’s final word. On the inbound front, former Napoli attacking midfielder Ezequiel Lavezzi is tempting the nerazzurri. Borussia won’t give in easily, but Juve is trying to dangle Champions League participation in front of the German midfielder. The first offer was in the neighbourhood of €24 million + €5 in bonuses for a total of €29 million. Now the ball is in the Germans’ court who, in turn, expect offers from Manchester City. An arduous task for the bianconeri. Meanwhile Marotta and Paratici – after securing promising 18 year-old midfielder Rolando Mandragora from Genoa – are one step away from Sampdoria’s 17-year old right back Pedro Pereira beating Leicester to the chase.
Speaking of Ranieri’s club, the foxes are in negotiations with Milan for Nigel De Jong, in order to bolster their squad for the second half of the Premiership to try to achieve the unthinkable. The English club is ready to offer Milan €3 million for the Dutchman. Also outbound is Alessio Cerci, whom Milan is negotiating with Genoa. Atletico Madrid – who still owns a stake in Cerci – is ok with this move which could be completed very soon.
Roma is making a few moves in January, between complaints and moans. After finalizing Juan Iturbe‘s loan to Bournemouth it has almost closed a major deal with Genoa for Diego Perotti. The Argentinian playmaker should move to the capital for €12 million (€9 million plus €3 in bonuses).
The waters of the Arno in Florence are also moving. Fiorentina, in fact, got Lucas Ocampos from Marseille on loan – in France they say it’s a done deal.
