Napoli defeated Milan in an intense match at the Stadio San Paolo by a score of 4-2 on Saturday night. After the match, Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri spoke to Sky Sport about what he sees from his team in the newborn season.
Sarri spoke about the impressive play of Dries Mertens and newcomer Arek Milik:
“Mertens is good at the moment, and is doing important things for us. It is right that he has the ambition to play as often as possible. But, he knows very well that if he looks at me wrong he won’t make an impression (laughs). Milik? He has the ability to come and play with the team naturally; in training he left me with important impressions. You must take the two goals for what he is and you have to let him grow, to learn the language. He’s a young guy and should not be given the legacy of Higuain because it would be too heavy, but he’s a guy who provides great sensations.”
The partenopei coach also spoke about the team and what needs to be improved:
“The defensive line is high or low in relation to what is happening in the front; with the midfielders and forwards we are not yet at the defensive levels we were last year. It is not that there were so many of these situations with Milan; at 2-0 we were forced to lower ourselves, but that’s because we lacked cover of the ball by the forwards and midfielders.
The feeling is that the team lacks a touch of brilliance. We are still missing the high pace. We have not been able to cover a lot of ground at high speed, but we were able to in regards to our acceleration. We are able to provide an individual acceleration, but we are not able to maintain high pace for long periods. ”
Sarri commented on his expulsion and spoke about referees early on this season:
“The referees are not helping me at the start of this season: we were not given a penalty at Pescara; they gave us one and then they took it away, and we conceded a goal due to a foul on Jorginho in the midfield. I said to they what the hell were they doing, there was no offense; to get the expulsion seemed to me a bit excessive.”
Sky Sport also asked Sarri about the Gabbiadini situation:
“I’m happy; he did not have a great game at Pescara because he played in a segment where the whole team didn’t play well. He did not have a great game because he suffers from not having enough preparations during the early stages of the season; he needs some time to dispose of the work and come out with results. If he remains, he’ll guarantee us a high number of goals, but it is up to him to decide what will be best for his career. I would advise him to stay with us if he is a firm believer, but if it is not the case I would tell him to take another path because there are risks the performances won’t be his best.”
Sarri and Napoli will take the win from the game for the first win of the season. However, they will continue to look for improvements by the time they come back to face Palermo in the Serie A.
