In our weekly feature, here on Italian Football Daily, we take a look at the weekend performances of the Italian players currently based in the top two divisions in England.
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE
Graziano Pelle (Southampton)
Graziano Pelle was again influential in Southampton’s 2-0 win at home to Bournemouth. Pelle scored the Saints’ second goal, taking his tally to 6 in the league in only 11 matches. Pelle’s performances at Southampton have secured his place as first choice forward for Italy, and Azzurri manager, Antonio Conte, will be hoping that Pelle continues this form in the lead up to Euro 2016.
Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)
Matteo Darmian played 66 minutes of United’s 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace, before being replaced by Ashley Young as United pushed for a breakthrough. Darmian picked up fifth yellow card of the season in the League, and will now miss United’s next game at Premier League home to West Bromwich Albion.
Fabio Borini & Vito Mannone (Sunderland)
Borini missed Sunderland’s trip to Everton through injury, and will be thankful he wasn’t on the pitch as the Mackems suffered a 6-2 hammering by the Merseyside outfit. He is expected to return to training this week.
Mannone was an unused substitute in this fixture.
Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)
Ogbonna was an unused substitute in West Ham United’s 2-0 defeat away to Alessandro Diamanti’s Watford.
Alessandro Diamanti (Watford)
Diamanti was an unused substitute against Angelo Ogbonna’s West Ham United.
ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP
Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)
Fernando Forestieri was once again the match winner for Sheffield Wednesday in their 1-0 win at home to Nottingham Forest. Forestieri found the back of the net with a powerful 25-yard effort in the 68th minute, which the Forest ‘keeper should really have prevented. The win stretched Wednesday’s unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions, and sees The Owls move up to eighth place in the Championship. The former Italy Under-21 playmaker has proved pivotal in Wednesday’s promotion push, by both scoring and creating key goals, and if he continues in his vein of form will likely attract interest from several Premier League.
After the game, Forestieri earned praise from the Wednesday coach, Carlos Carvalhal, who said: ‘The way that Fernando works is the most important thing about him, rather than the goals he scores.’
Diego Fabbrini (on loan from Watford) & Michael Agazzi (Middlesbrough)
After their mid-week win on penalties over Manchester United in the League Cup, Middlesbrough and Diego Fabbrini hosted Charlton Athletic looking to continue their push for promotion from the Championship. Although Fabbrini did not get on the scoresheet, he was an influential figure in the match, and was unlucky not to score in the first half as he saw one attempt tipped over in athletic fashion by the Charlton ‘keeper, and another effort go narrowly over. The win saw ‘Boro maintain fourth place in the league table.
Once again, Michael Agazzi did not feature in Middlesbrough’s squad for this fixture.
Mirco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci, Marco Silvestri & Tommaso Bianchi (Leeds United)
Massimo Cellino’s Leeds United continued their dreadful League form on Thursday evening with a 2-0 defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers, with both the visitors’ goals coming in the first six minutes. The defeat means that Leeds slip to nineteenth place in the Championship table, and extended their run without a win to 6 games.
Silvestri and Antenucci started the game while Bellusci was once again on the substitutes’ bench. Antenucci had one chance in each half, but was unable to convert either, seeing a first-half volley hit the side-netting and a second-half shot saved. Silvestre made several saves during the game, but had no chance with either of Blackburn’s goals, both of which came from suspect defensive play and positioning.
Bellusci was once again an unused substitute, whilst Bianchi was not selected for the match day squad.
Francesco Pisano (Bolton Wanderers)
Francesco Pisano came on as an 83rd minute substitute in Bolton’s 0-0 draw away to fellow strugglers, Preston North End, and helped The Trotters to keep a clean sheet as they faced a late flurry of pressure from the home side. The point saw Bolton move up to 22nd place in the Championship.
Gabriele Angella (Queens Park Rangers – on loan from Watford)
Gabriele Angella did not make the match-day squad as QPR fell to a 1-0 defeat against west London rivals, Brentford.
Federico Macheda (Cardiff City)
Federico Macheda missed Cardiff City’s 0-0 draw away to Ipswich Town as he has still not recovered from surgery to repair a disc injury. The former Manchester United forward is likely to return to action towards the end of November.
Diego De Girolamo (Sheffield United)
Once again, De Girolamo did not feature in Sheffield United’s match day squad which suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Crewe Alexandra.
