Serie A Team of the Week: Round 11

After Round 11 of Serie A action, here are the eleven players included in Italian Football Daily’s Team of the Week:

Goalkeeper: Mattia Perin, Genoa

Perin was a key figure in Genoa’s 0-0 draw against the Serie A form team, Napoli, this weekend. Few teams have managed to keep the Partenopei out in recent games, and Genoa’s ability to do so was, in the main, down to Perin. The Genoa ‘keeper made 8 saves as he and his team mates earned themselves a point that may be invaluable at the end of the season.

Centre-Half: Nicolas Burdisso, Genoa

Like his team-mate, Mattia Perin, Nicolas Burdisso makes our team of the week due to his performance in keeping out a Napoli forward line which has been prolific this season. Burdisso showed his years of experience in handling the threat posed by the prolific Gonzalo Higuain, and marshalled the Genoa defensive line well under intense pressure. Burdisso will however count himself lucky not to have conceded a penalty for a push on Higuain.

Centre-Half: Miranda, Inter

One of the key reasons behind Inter’s excellent defensive record this season has been Miranda’s excellent partnership with Jeison Murillo. The former Atletico Madrid player has recovered well since his sending off against Fiorentina earlier in the season, and his abilities were once again evident in the top of the table clash against AS Roma, as he led his defence well in the nullification of a Roma attack which had scored 25 goals before this fixture.

Centre Half: Francesco Acerbi, Sassuolo

One week after a victory over Juventus in which he was one of Sassuolo’s performers, Acerbi helped his team-mates to solidify Sassuolo’s position in the top 5 places in Serie A with another excellent performance during their 0-0 draw away to Udinese. Acerbi’s development this season has been consistent, as he continues to be an integral part of Sassuolo’s defence.

Left Wing-Back: Adam Masina, Bologna

Masina was a key performer in Bologna’s 3-0 victory over Atalanta, helping the Rossoblu’s to a clean sheet and providing an assist for Mattia Destro’s goal. The only downside to the Moroccan left-back’s performance was a fourth yellow card of the season late in the game. Masina’s consistent performances this season have seen him attract interest from Sevilla, and he is likely to be the subject of a bid in the January transfer window.

Centre-Midfield: Gary Medel, Inter

As a defensive midfielder, Gary Medel rarely gets on the scoresheet however, the Chile international’s strike from 25 yards was a worthy match-winning goal as the Nerazzurri beat Roma 1-0 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. Medel also provided good protection to his back-four as they coped well with the goalscoring threat posed by the Roma midfielders, Mohamed Salah and Miralem Pjanic.

Centre Midfield, Paul Pogba, Juventus

There have been some people doubting the abilities of the former Manchester United man in recent weeks given Juventus’ indifferent start to the season however, Pogba chose the Derby della Mole to silence any critics as he put in a powerful performance to lead the Bianconeri to a 2-1 victory. Pogba opened the scoring in the nineteenth minute, firing a half-volley past the helpless Daniele Padelli in the Torino goal, and was a constant threat to the Granita throughout the game.

Centre Midfield: Giacomo Bonaventura, AC Milan

Bonaventura continued his excellent recent form, by providing the assists for Milan’s second and third goals scored by Mexes and Bacca respectively. If the former Atalanta man continues his excellent recent form, he will be unlucky not to be included in Antonio Conte’s squad for Euro 2016.

Right Wing-Back: Juan Cuadrado, Juventus

Despite only coming on as an eleventh minute substitute for the injured Sami Khedira, Juan Cuadrado had a key impact on this match. The ex-Viola man provided the assist for Paul Pogba’s fantastic half-volley in the 19th minute, and popped up with the winning goal in the third minute of added time as he converted Alex Sandro’s cross past Torino ‘keeper Daniele Padelli

Forward: Eder, Sampdoria

The Azzurri marksman continued his excellent goalscoring form with Sampdoria’ goal in their 1-1 draw away to Empoli. The strike was the 29 year-old’s ninth league goal of the season and, barring injury, he is a shoo-in to be selected for the Azzurri squad that travels to France for Euro 2016.

Forward: Carlos Bacca, AC Milan

Carlos Bacca continued his excellent goalcoring form, as he scored Milan’s third goal in their comprehensive 3-1 victory away to Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico. With six goals already in Serie A, Bacca is repaying the faith shown him in by Milan following his move from Sevilla in the summer transfer window. His movement and positioning in this game were a constant threat to the Lazio defence.
