Serie A’s Free Agent XI – Summer 2016

With the season coming to a close shortly, many players’ current contracts are expiring giving them the option to choose their next destination.

Originally found at Serie A Scouted.

Over the past few years, bosman transfers have helped a number of Serie A clubs *cough Juventus *cough build competitive sides with minimal resources. Given the success with this method, expect countless Serie A teams to dip into the free agent market this summer in hopes of finding the bargain of the year. This season’s signing of the year has arguably been Sami Khedira, a player Juventus snapped up on a free transfer. While most clubs will venture outside of Italy for their free agents (aka Feghouli, Ibrahimovic, Ben Arfa, Banega etc) there are quite a bit of bargains available within the peninsula. That said, only a few of the players in the following eleven are top five quality in Italy.

GOALKEEPER –

Vid Belec (Carpi) – The goalkeeping talent in Serie A’s free agency market is relatively thin this summer but Carpi’s Belec is worth considering. Since assuming the role as Carpi’s #1, Belec has impressed and has strung together a number of consistent performances. Should Carpi manage to stay up this season, they should consider renewing the 25-year-old’s deal or will risk losing a solid shot-stopper.

DEFENDERS –

Facundo Roncaglia (Fiorentina) – The Fiorentina man is among the hottest commodities in defence this summer but his recklessness has put off various clubs across the league. On his day, Roncaglia is a decent defender to have in your side as his versatility gives the manager a plethora of options. Recently, however, the Argentine has been playing at right back and claimed that he enjoys playing like Dani Alves. Yeah, right. With an expiring deal, expect a few of Serie A’s mid-table clubs to inquire about him.

*Note* – Maicon could have also been included in his place but the Brazilian has his heart reportedly set on a move away.

Andrea Barzagli (Juventus) – The veteran defender is easily the best player with an expiring deal in Italy and has established himself as arguably Italy’s best defender. That said, Barzagli is set to sign a contract renewal shortly, taking him off the market definitively. As a result, we will shift our attention to Milan’s Cristian Zapata. The Colombian international blows hot and cold at times but has looked good in his recent outings, most notably in Milan’s draw against Napoli. Could that be enough to keep him in Italy?

Martin Caceres (Juventus) – The Uruguayan is another Juventus defender whose contract is expiring. However, it appears that the Juventus board have no intentions of offering him a renewal. Right now, Napoli are the favourites to land Caceres while his agent has also met with Milan and Roma. At Juventus, Caceres has had recurring injury problems but has looked good when coming in for one of Bonucci, Barzagli or Chiellini. Should he sign for Napoli like it is being widely reported, the partenopei will have made a shrewd signing as he’s capable of playing anywhere in defence and has as much fight as anyone in the league.

Yuto Nagatomo (Inter) – Going into the summer, there are a few left backs that will be without a contract. That said, Patrice Evra, like Barzagli, will sign a renewal in the coming weeks and Manuel Pasqual is, well, Manuel Pasqual. That would then leave Nagatomo as Serie A’s top free agent left back. Yikes. But it’s not all bad. Despite not being good enough for one of the league’s top clubs, Nagatomo is still capable of doing a job for a mid-table side where he has previously thrived. As a result, there should be some interest in the Japanese international.

MIDFIELDERS –

Simone Pepe (Chievo) – The 32-year-old has gotten his career back on track since joining Chievo but is once again out of contract at the end of the season. Like most players in this list, Pepe will entice interest from the league’s mid-table clubs. This season, the former Juventus man has three goals and an assist in four starts. If Chievo decide not to renew his deal, Pepe will likely remain in Italy as he’s still a decent depth player to have.

Riccardo Montolivo (Milan) – Opinion among Milan fans seems to be divided when it comes to Montolivo. The reality is, however, that the former Fiorentina man doesn’t cut it at the top level. More importantly, his departure would free three and a half million euros (!!!) off their wage bill. With Milan likely to miss out on European football, they simply can’t afford to pay a player like Montolivo this much money. However, if he renews at a fraction of his current salary, it may be worth considering from the rossoneri’s perspective.

Ricardo Alvarez (Sampdoria) – It’s time to face the reality that Alvarez just isn’t that good and will never live up to his pre-Inter hype. While that is the case, he has looked decent since returning to Italy after his failed English adventure. But has his form warranted a renewal? Let’s face it – Sampdoria could do far worse than Alvarez and giving him another year at the club isn’t the worst idea. He doesn’t command a crazy wage and has shown that he can function in Montella’s system.

Danilo Soddimo (Frosinone) – Now this, this is a player that I like. The 28-year-old has featured consistently in Frosinone’s lineup this season and has impressed on the left wing. Throughout this season, Soddimo has demonstrated that he is Serie A worthy and should remain in the league even if his side is relegated. Given his modest salary, the opportunity for a summer bargain is there.

 FORWARDS –

Francesco Totti (Roma) – Totti is undoubtedly the biggest name in the eleven despite being 39 years old. In recent times, Roma’s management have started talking to the legendary forward about a renewal but Totti has made it clear that he won’t accept a limited role at the club. This leads one to wonder if this is the last season Roma’s iconic #10 will grace our pitches. Or, maybe, just maybe, a swoop from another team is on the cards. But that would be plain wrong, wouldn’t it?

Mauricio Pinilla (Atalanta) – Pinilla doesn’t have as much star power as his strike partner but is arguably a more effective player right now. The Chilean international is one of those strikers with a natural goalscoring instinct and typically finds the back of the net in spectacular fashion. With German Denis’ departure, it’s quite baffling that Pinilla is still without a contract at the club.

4-4-2: Belec; Roncaglia, Barzagli, Caceres, Nagatomo; Pepe, Montolivo, Alvarez, Soddimo; Totti, Pinilla.

Honourable mentions – Zapata, Maicon, Klose, Emanuelson, Pasqual, Alex, Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Fiorentina, Illicic: ”If A Good Offer Arrives, I Will Speak With The Club”

Josip Illicic would entertain offers from other clubs and sit down with Fiorentina if a good offer were to present itself.

In a recent interview with the Slovenian media, Josip Illicic spoke about the possibility of leaving Fiorentina for a move elsewhere:

I am happy at Fiorentina and I am doing well in Italy. It is only normal to be associated with other clubs when you play multiple years with one team. If a good offer were to arrive in the summer, I will certainly speak to management about it. In such case, we will find a solution that satisfies everyone. In the meantime, let’s think about the race for third place.

Roma target Juventus defender Martin Caceres

A few car crashes and injuries later, the out of favor Uruguayan seems set to depart Turin.

Martin Caceres is the newest name on the block for Spalletti’s Roman renaissance. It’s a concrete idea, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. Sporting Director Walter Sabatini has met with the agent of the Uruguay international, Daniel Fonseca.
Juventus aren’t keen however, on selling the Uruguayan to a league rival, but there’s also pressing from Napoli. Both the Giallorossi and the Partenopei are looking to acquire a defender with extensive international history.
The 28 year old has played in only 9 matches this season with Juventus. His season ended prematurely due to an achilles’ tendon rupture suffered a few months ago.

Juventus, Chiellini: “Scudetto race? It’s better to be ahead”

The Juventus defender is on the brink of returning to the field and hopes to give a hand in the title fight.

Giorgio Chiellini spoke to Sky Sport on Thursday on returning to the field after various injuries have kept him off the field for the last 2 months. Finally it seems he has fully recovered from his physical woes.

“It’s not easy to come back. However there are two more months in which I won’t hesitate to give a hand to the team and then I hope on Saturday I can stay on the field until mid July. The Scudetto? It’s better to be out in front, we’re aware that it won’t be easy. There are many challenges we have to beat but we won’t be looking at the tables. This has always be our secret.

Conte has 16 certainties: What Should He Do With The Last 7 Spots?

Recently Antonio Conte came out and said that he’s got a pretty good picture of which players he will take to France.

The Azzurri chief said there are about 16 players that he knows will be in France come June, which leaves 7 spots open for players to impress the Italy boss.

Today, we discuss which 7 players Conte should include in his Euro 2016 roster and also a possible alternation he should make within his 16 certainties.

As reported by Sky Italia, here are the 16 players that Conte has decided will be on the squad:
GK: Buffon, Sirigu, Perin
DEF: Bouncci, Barzagli, Chiellini, Darmian
MID: Florenzi, Verratti, Marchisio, Candreva, Parolo, Giaccherini
ATT: Pelle, Zaza, El Shaarawy
Now to the players who deserve to be given one of the final 7 spots..
DEFENSE
Alessio Romagnoli:
The Milan defender is enjoying a good season and has proved to be worthy of wearing the Italy shirt in France come June. In the latest International break, we saw Conte call up defenders like Ranocchia, Astori and Acerbi, clearly those are not the defenders one would want at the Euro. Romagnoli is one of, if not the best young Italian defender and he’s been in a fantastic form this season. Worthy of a Euro 2016 call up and with many of the other options being average players, there’s no logical reason why he shouldn’t be there.
Mattia De Sciglio
Italy’s lack of top full backs is actually very concerning. In the 16 Conte has picked so far, there is only one proper full back, Darmian (there’s Florenzi, but he’s a natural midfielder). It’s looking like Conte will go with a 3 man back line so full backs won’t be needed too much, but you do need other options and that’s what De Scigilo will bring. He can play both on the left side and right side and can also play wing back in a 3 man backline. Mattia will be able to offer Conte some flexibility, which is always needed in these type of tournaments.
MIDFIELDERS:
Giacomo Bonaventura:
It’s really hard to argue against Jack. He’s been outstanding for Milan this season and has really taken his game to the next level. As we saw in the match vs Germany and even at times vs Spain, sometimes this Italy setup lacks creativity in the midfield and he’s someone that along with let’s say Marco Verratti, could create multiple chances for the attackers. His versatility can also help out. Having someone who can do multiple different things is such an advantage in a World Cup/Euro. He’s proven he can be a game changer and there’s a high chance he will be in France.
Jorginho:
Jorginho picking to play for Italy over Brazil is a huge gain for Nazionale. He’s been outstanding for Napoli this season. As guys like Higuain get the praise, it’s Jorginho who has done the dirty work in the midfield and has been extremely important to the success of Sarri’s side this season. It’s unlikely Jorginho would be a starter but he would provide as a perfect vice Marchisio. He’s also much better than fellow midfielders like Motta and Montolivo. Antonio Conte in his most recent fixtures gave the midfielder the call, something he’s deserved for a long time and something he deserves when Conte is making the list for his Euro 2016 squad.
CHANGE: Take out Giaccherini, put in Daniele De Rossi.
For the most part, Conte’s 16 certainties are good and fair picks and here’s the only alteration that needs to take place. Daniele De Rossi needs to be in France. His fitness problems have held him back recently but if De Rossi is fit going into Euro 2016 there is no reason why he should be at home with Giaccherini in France. In these competitions you need your best and most experienced players and vice-captain has been one of Italy’s leaders for years now. De Rossi will be important to the midfield but he can even offer Conte another option in defense if it’s needed.
ATTACKERS:
Lorenzo Insigne:
Do we even need to explain this pick? It’s mind blowing that Insigne isn’t being considered a certainty at this point. The other day Buffon praised him saying he is the future of Italian football and there’s a reason why the captain said that, it’s because this guy is. As shown in the match vs Spain, Insigne lifts this Italian side up and can change the game for them. It’s likely Insigne will be on the team, but if he isn’t, it’ll be a fraud that the little man from Napoli is left at home.
Ciro Immobile:
In the 16 we see two #9’s and that’s Pelle and Zaza. Nothing against either, who are both good and as we speak worthy options but Conte will need one more ‘Prima Punta’ and that’s Immobile. Since his return to Torino, Immobile has gotten back to scoring goals and an Immobile who is scoring goals should always be on the national team. In terms of natural talent and form he is probably Italy’s best option for the striker position. It’s possible that he actually will crack into the XI ahead of Pelle and Zaza come Euro time.
Domenico Berardi:
The young Italian is one of Italy’s hottest prospects and is one of Italy’s top attackers. For the last couple years he’s been tearing it up in Serie A and his call up to the senior side has been a long time coming for him. He’s really been a leader for Sassuolo and Italy really could use a right winger with a left foot who cuts in. His eye for goal as a winger is incredible and is something Italy can definitely use come tournament time. Candreva is the current winger on the right side but having the option of going to someone who can cut in with his left foot would be nice.
Honorable Mention: Leaving Sebastian Giovinco at home could also be a mistake. He’s someone who deserves a spot and he might be able to crack the squad over guys like Berardi, Zaza and Pelle.
These are the players Conte should pick with those 7 spots while also making an alternation with Giaccherini and De Rossi.

Sigh of Relief: Juventus talisman Bonucci out for limited time

Juventus fans had a heart stopping moment on Tuesday when their star defender Leonardo Bonucci went down while on international duty with Italy. It turns out after tests ran on Wednesday that the injury is not as severe as it appeared.

The 28-year-old was stretchered off of the field during Italy’s 4-1 loss to Germany on Tuesday in an international friendly. Bonucci went down attempting to stop a German breakaway, but the defending World Cup champions scored on the play. During the German celebrations, the medical team came on to examine the Juve star and he was taken off.

Bonucci told RAI Sport that he “heard a crack and was in pain”.

Many were concerned that he could miss a large chunk of time, some even speculating that if he had surgery, he could miss Euro 2016, but both the bianconeri and the azzurri are fortunate to hear that the defender will miss only three days to rest after his injury.

Juventus is still clinging to a three point lead in Serie A over Napoli and are attempting to win their fifth straight scudetto. The Old Lady also has the Coppa Italia final to look forward to against Milan. Bonucci will play an integral part in those competitions as well as for Italy in the Euros.

The defender is suspended for Juve’s match against Empoli on Saturday, so that will give him more of an opportunity to fully recover.

Giorgio Chiellini returns to training with Juventus

After yesterday’s injury scare with Leonardo Bonucci, Juventus can again breathe a sigh of relief with their injury woes.

Bonucci evaded a serious injury after slipping and being stretchered off the pitch against Germany, according to reports. However the good news doesn’t stop there as several other players returned to training.

Juventus published a statement on their official club site saying that Giorgio Chiellini had returned to full first team training today, in addition to internationals Buffon, Rugani, Lichtsteiner, Evra, Pogba and Zaza.

Meanwhile Barzagli, Marchisio and Dybala trained apart from the first team as the upcoming weekend clash with Empoli looms.

Azzurri, Buffon: “I’m not angry, I’m disappointed”

Italy were completely and utterly dismantled at the Allianz Arena yesterday against Germany, and the Azzurri skipper was not pleased with the outcome.

Speaking to Rai Sport, Gianluigi Buffon didn’t hide his displeasure with the team.

“I’m not angry or upset, I’m disappointed. We lost badly a game that has had many implications and there’s also a historical side to it we had to honor. We come off a game with Spain in which we played well, a positive result would have been the confirmation of something good done before.”

Was there too much euphoria before the game?

“Probably so. We’re a good team that becomes great when you put certain characteristics onto the field.”

Azzurri, Zaza: ”We Took Two Steps Back Today”

Simone Zaza laments the team’s performance against Germany and says they took two steps back instead of forward with the loss.

Speaking to Rai in a post-game interview after Italy’s 4-1 defeat to Germany, Simone Zaza shares his disappointment in how the entire team performed:

We had a bad performance, regardless of who the opponent was. Against Spain, we played a great game but today, we took two steps back. We were not phenomenal on Thursday, therefore we must roll up our sleeves. We know we have to work a lot more to do well in France. We did not perform well in attack, we recovered at the start of the 2nd half. They scored the third goal and cut us off at the knees. We have to continue believing in what we are doing.

On what would happen if Germany and Italy met at the EURO:

I do not know but what I can say is that we have to improve. It is better to lose now than to lose at the EURO. We can only be strong if we give it our all, otherwise we are as normal as everyone else.

On the 3-4-3 being effective against teams like Germany:

It is relative. What counts is determination, desire and personality. Four days ago, we played well with the same shape versus Spain.

Italy Player Ratings vs Germany

FLORENCE, ITALY - MARCH 21: Leonardo Bonucci (R) and Antonio Candreva chat prior to the Italy training session at the club's training ground at Coverciano on March 21, 2016 in Florence, Italy. (Photo by Claudio Villa/Getty Images)

Italy struggled to find anything offensively against the reigning World Cup champion Germany and defensively they gave up four goals in a 4-1 loss.

This is how we rated the individual performances of Italy’s players against Germany.

Goalkeeper

Buffon (4.0): The 38-year-old was lacking much help from the Italian backline, but his reactions could have been better. Gave Germany a penalty for their fourth goal.

Defenders

Acerbi (2.0): The Germans were constantly getting past Italy’s backline and the Sassuolo man was caught out on quite a few occasions.

Bonucci (3.0): Did not show the leadership that was required for an inexperienced Italy backline. The Juventus defender slipped on Germany’s third goal and went off injured.

Darmian (2.0): The Manchester United fullback struggled to play in a more central role. His poor defending played a part in at least two German goals.

Midfielders

Florenzi (4.0): The Roma man had a few wayward passes and was not able to have the same impact as he did in the match against Spain.

Montolivo (2.5): Struggled to contain Germany’s midfield guys and blew Italy’s best offensive chance by sending the ball well wide off of a set piece.

Motta (3.0): The 33-year-old didn’t have nearly the impact he had against Spain and struggled to contain Germany’s midfield.

Giaccherini (2.5): Did not make his presence felt much during the match and was nearly invisible most of the time.

Forwards

Bernardeschi (4.0): The young winger did not help create much offense in his first international start.

Zaza (3.5): The Juventus striker was not given good service which is an essential part of his game.

Insigne (4.0): Had some of Italy’s best touches and dribbles, but had a few wayward services on set-pieces.

Substitutes

De Silvestri (3.0): The Sampdoria man replaced Florenzi and didn’t help the Italian cause at all.

Ranocchia (2.5): Replaced the injured Bonucci and let Germany past leading to the penalty on Buffon.

Parolo (3.0): Didn’t make an impact taking the place of Motta.

El Sharaawy (5.0): Italy looked much better when the Roma man was on the ball. He score the Azzurri’s only goal and found Okaka for a good opportunity.

Okaka (3.5): Took his best opportunity straight into the arms of Germany’s goalkeeper Ter Stegen.

Antonelli (N/A): The player was not on the pitch long enough to properly asses his performance.

Azzurri, Conte: ”We Will Make The Necessary Evaluations”’

Antonio Conte plans to evaluate his squad after two winless friendlies and wait until the end of the season to determine who will be on the flight to France.

After Italy’s crushing 4-1 defeat to Germany, Antonio Conte spoke to Rai Sport following the loss:

I said it before, we needed these tests to make evaluations. We challenged the best team, as well as Spain who are among the top teams in the world. We worked and the lads gave it their all. Now we must make the evaluations. We know we have to bridge the gap between ourselves and the other teams, to do this we will try to pick the best players.

To play with a high tempo and intensity, you need the legs. A few suffered due to their efforts on Friday and this must also be evaluated. We will work and see what will happen. There are players who will be a part of the EURO, we will see at the end of the season which of those will be chosen.

Conte was then asked about the injury Bonucci suffered in the build-up to Germany’s 3rd goal:

Bonucci’s injury did alter the formation that I had in mind going forward.

Analysis: Conte Commits Tactical Suicide In Munich

Today, Italy travelled to Munich to take on Germany at the Allianz Arena and suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat.

A trip to Germany is likely one of the hardest international fixtures there are at the moment. Factor in a completely wrong tactical setup and you’ve already lost the game before it started. Simply put, Antonio Conte got his lineup and formation totally wrong today and it cost his side dearly. While it is only a friendly, this performance poses more questions than it answers and serves as a truly worrying sign for the Azzurri faithful going into Euro 2016. But where exactly did it go wrong for Buffon and co. tonight?

How they lined up –

Italy (3-4-3): Buffon; Darmian, Bonucci, Acerbi; Florenzi, Montolivo, Thiago Motta, Giaccherini; Bernardeschi, Zaza, Insigne.

Germany (3-4-3): Ter Stegen; Rüdiger, Mustafi, Hummels; Rudy, Özil, Kroos, Hector; Müller, Götze, Draxler.

Result (4-1)

1) The 3-4-3 CLEARLY doesn’t work.

It’s clear to see that the 3-4-3 will never work with the personnel at Conte’s disposal. Outside of a decent performance against Spain’s B team, the 3-4-3 has no place on the international stage with this crop of Azzurri players. Tonight against Germany, Conte fielded two of Italy’s least mobile midfielders in Riccardo Montolivo and Thiago Motta and paid the consequences. Germany’s superior midfielders were cutting through them like a hot knife through butter and were finding their front three with ease between the lines. Gli Azzurri’s flat midfield four looked all over the place and left more gaps between themselves and the defence than Milan under Pippo Inzaghi. Under the right circumstances, Thiago Motta could work in the starting eleven while Montolivo, on the other hand, belongs at home.

At the Euros, the best solution for Conte is to go with a 4-3-3. A midfield three of Claudio Marchisio, Marco Verratti and Thiago Motta (or Jorginho) is able to maintain possession nicely and shield the back four. As a result, the opposition wouldn’t be able to bypass them at will like Germany did tonight. The 4-3-3 also means that Italy’s best player in the final third *cough Insigne *cough can be at his best on the left wing. While question marks remain over who will act as Italy’s right winger (Berardi/Bernardeschi/Candreva?) or #9 (Pellè/Zaza/Immobile), this setup, at the very least, gives Italy a chance to make the most of their quality centre midfielders and wingers. Oh, and it means Montolivo is nowhere near the pitch in a meaningful game. All in all, this was arguably one of Conte’s most shocking displays as a manager.

2) The 3-4-3 clearly doesn’t work.  Uh, I mean, the attack must be built around Insigne.

Let’s forget about the 3-4-3 for a second and take a look at Insigne. With each passing game, it’s clear to see that Italy’s forwards are bang-on mediocre. That said, there is a certain Neapolitan winger that has given Italy some hope to cling on to. Every time Insigne touches the ball, Italy or Napoli for that matter, look dangerous. As Italy’s average forwards move in and out of the eleven, Insigne has to be a mainstay and should be the centrepiece of the attack. Today against Germany, he was Italy’s best player (not that it was hard to be this) and almost got an assist in the first half after playing through Bernardeschi. With the Euros around the corner and Conte looking devoid of any real ideas in the final third, he must turn to Insigne.

In recent times it seems that the former Juventus man has acknowledged this and handed the Napoli man the reigns of the team in attack. Against Germany, Insigne drifted centrally often and played off of Zaza every time a long ball would come into the Juventus striker. By doing this, Insigne picked up a number of knockdowns from the striker and was able to run directly at the German defence. In France this summer, expect a similar tactic to be employed in order to get Insigne the ball as much as possible. If not, Italy will find it increasingly difficult to find the back of the net.

3) Italy must press the opposition high up the pitch.

Tonight against Germany, Conte had his men sit back and soak the German pressure instead of pressing them high. At times, Italy did push their men up the pitch and troubled the World Cup champions but didn’t sustain it throughout the entire ninety minutes. With Italy sitting back, Germany’s quality midfielders were able to pick them apart at will and create a number of top drawer scoring chances.

One of the major strengths of Conte’s Juve was their ability to press the opponent like hounds despite not necessarily having as much quality as them. This Italy side is similar in the fact that they won’t always measure up to their opponents’ quality and must put them under pressure. When Italy employed a higher line tonight against Germany, they were able to keep the ball and get into the game. Once they sat back, however, the game got out of hand. At the Euros, Conte’s men have to press as a team up the pitch if they are to have any chance at stifling the better sides.

Paris Saint-Germain The Latest Giant To Target Bernardeschi

Fiorentina’s Federico Bernardeschi is attracting interest from Europe’s top clubs this season and it now appears that Paris Saint-Germain have entered the race.

Fresh off his international debut with the senior side, Federico Bernardeschi is enjoying life at Fiorentina. However, recent reports suggest that he may not be with the Viola that long. According to Le10Sport, Laurent Blanc is said to be a big fan of his and wants to bring him to Paris in the summer. The French giants are not the only club that are after the Italian winger’s signature as Bayern Munich will also make an attempt for the player in the summer. With Carlo Ancelotti coming in and wanting to stamp his mark on the side, Bernardeschi sits atop his lift of reinforcements.

Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was asked about Bernardeschi a few weeks ago and said,:

I hope Bernardeschi demonstrates at Coverciano what he’s doing at Fiorentina. He merits the call-up and is Italy’s best talent.”

Candreva Moves Closer To Lazio Departure In The Summer

Lazio’s Antonio Candreva will move on to greener pastures in the summer with a number of Italy’s big clubs interested in the winger.

According to Sky Sports, among all the uncertainty at Lazio, there’s one guarantee: Antonio Candreva’s departure at the end of the season. The player’s decision to leave the club stems from the lack of Champions League qualification. However, Candreva won’t be the only player to leave the club as various other players will reportedly ask to leave the club in the summer.

Since joining Lazio, Candreva has established himself as one of the league’s better wingers and a regular with Antonio Conte’s Azzurri. While Lazio have made a few cup runs since his arrival, the player is said to want a more consistent shot at silverware. Clubs like Juventus, Milan, Inter and Napoli are currently interested in the player and will sit down with Claudio Lotito to negotiate a price-tag.

Right now it appears that the biancocelesti will ask for 25 million euros for the player. That said, the price may decrease as both parties would like to seal a departure.

Zielinski: “Liverpool? It’s More Than Just Rumours.”

Udinese loanee Piotr Zielinski is attracting interest from Liverpool and may be on the move come the summer time.

Recent reports from Italy are suggesting that Piotr Zielinski is wanted by a number of big European clubs but Liverpool have pulled ahead in recent times. In an interview with Futbolfejs, the Polish midfielder confirmed the English club’s interest:

“They aren’t only rumours, there’s something more there. I’m working hard with Empoli in order to make the leap in quality and sign for a big club in June. Coutinho is a great player with a lot of quality. I learn a lot from him and think we can form a nice partnership. I spoke with Blaszczykowski about Klopp and he gave me some advice. However, we don’t know anything yet.”

Zielinski has been in stellar form for Empoli this season and has lived up to his earlier promise. The Polish midfielder is now one of Italy’s more higher-rated talents and has a number of suitors.

English Clubs Circle For Bonucci

Two of England’s top clubs are interested in Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci as Manchester City and Chelsea are reportedly lining up bids for the former Bari man.

This morning Tuttomercatoweb.com reported that new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants Leonardo Bonucci at Chelsea when he signs with them in the summer. These rumours have been reported both in Italy and in England and are beginning to gain some traction.  The Juventus defender would be Roman Abramovich’s first major signing of the summer.

With John Terry set to leave the club in the summer, there is a gaping hole at the heart of the Blues’ defence. Since signing with Juventus, Bonucci has established himself as one of the better defenders in the world and can dictate the play as good as almost any defender in football. As a result, it should come as no surprise that Conte, a man who built his title-winning defences around Bonucci, would want him at his new club.

However, they will face stiff competition from Manchester City as Pep Guardiola also wants the player and is prepared to offer Juventus 35 million euros for him.

Today, Bonucci spoke out to the media about the rumours. The Juventus defender said,:

“I have a contract with Juventus until 2020. I met Conte in Turin & the furthest he’s asked me to follow him is for a cup of coffee. If today I am one of the best defenders in Europe or in the world, then surely a big part of the credit goes to the coach.”

Serie B Week 33 Round-up

Crespo has worked for free, sh**s,” the words of Andra Alessia Rossi, the wife of Hernan Crespo, in the wake of her husband’s sacking by Modena at the weekend.

The Gialloblu looked to be on course for a big three points at home to Cagliari only for a late injury time collapse. The defeat saw the club fall to fifth bottom of the table and clinging to their Serie B status by their fingernails.

The defeat there 18th of the season, more than anyone else in the league, eventually saw the long suffering fans reach breaking point as they stormed the press-room after the match demanding Crespo’s head.

His head they duly got, in his stead has come Cristiano Bergodi a man who has occupied the bench at the Braglia on two separate occasions already. It is doubtful however if Bergodi will be the man the usher in a new dawn at a club that is firmly stuck in a rut while its upstart neighbours (Carpi & Sassuolo) take over the role of Kings of the province.

To matters on the pitch now and where better to start than with the faithful events at the Braglia between Modena and Cagliari.

Cagliari looked the more dangerous of the two sides early doors but were unable to break down the desperate Modena rear guard.  Then on the hour mark they were given a big boost when Daniele Giorico was sent off for the hosts.

Yet despite being the better team throughout and having the man advantage the Rossoblu were unable to take full advantage. Things surprisingly even took a turn for the worse when on 77 minutes Luca Belingheri side footed home into the bottom right hand corner after some excellent work by Matteo Rubin down the left.

Crespo’s joy was plain to see and it looked as if that joy was set to last but then as it has done so often this season disaster struck. With the clock ticking into the 93rd minute a low cross from the right end touchline somehow managed to evade the mass of Modena defenders and find its way to Diego Farias who slammed it into the roof of the net.

A minute later worse was to follow, the Modena defence showing the solidity of a watering can with a hole in it left Cagliari waltz their way in before Marco Sau finished from five yards out. Cagliari celebrate, Modena explode.

Amazingly the drama at the Braglia wasn’t even the best match of the weekend, that honour goes to Salernitana and Bari who played out a humdinger on Sunday night. The Granata went into the encounter looking to ease their relegation worries while for the Galletti it was all about cementing their play-off position.

Greeted by an electrifying atmosphere showcasing the friendship between the two fan bases the players certainly lived up to the occasion. The visitors opened the scoring on 44 minutes, a deflected cross back into the box from the right hand side fell perfectly into the path of Jacopo Dezi who first time stroked it home from about ten yards out.

The Granata though would not be long in getting level and a minute into stoppage time at the end of the first half Alfredo Donnarumma got his head to a cross from the right putting it down into the bottom left.

The drama quickly picked up again in the second half when on 52 minutes Gianluca Sansone deflected home an effort from distance by Alessandro Rosina. Two minutes after that Riccardo Maniero made it 1-3 finishing into the top left corner from inside the area after a swift attacking move by Bari.

The Granata though were not dead and buried yet and on 58 minutes had drawn one back through Massimo Coda. The former Parma man getting in behind the Galletti defence after they had failed to clear their lines sufficiently at the first time of asking.

Then a minute past the hour it was 3-3, Donnarumma with his second. This time expertly controlling a long ball over from the right before stepping inside his man and curling into the far right coner from about eight yards out.

Incredibly there was still more to come as on 64 minutes Dezi got his second and Bari’s fourth. A corner from the left was headed into the danger zone where and initial effort was saved only for the rebound to once again land at Dezi’s feet and like earlier he made no mistake. 3-4 it finished in a thrilling match down in Salerno.

Crotone slipped off top spot this weekend after the Squali were unable to breakdown Avellino at the Partenio. Not that they will be too worried with the result as they remain very much on course for promotion and a maiden season in Serie A.

Virtus Lanciano’s race up the table hit a speed bump on Saturday afternoon as they lost 0-1 at home to Perugia. Fabinho with the goal for the Girfone on 73 minutes as they move with three points of the play-offs.

Pescara continue to implode as they lost yet again this time to Ternana at the Libero Liberati. Massimiliano Busellato the only goal for the Rossoverde on 78 minutes. The Delfini are now down to tenth. Two other play-off hopefuls Brescia and Novara played out a 0-0 draw at the Stadio Rigamonti.

For Cesena though it proved a very good week indeed as they moved into third after a 3-0 home win over Latina. Camilo Ciano’s fourth minute free-kick opener being the best of the bunch, while the third from Antonio Ragusa definitely being the most comical.

Trapani continue their push for a play-off position with a massive three points away to Spezia, Luca Nizzetto with the all-important second for the Sicilians, 1-2. Livorno’s horror season continues apace as they lost 0-1 at home to fellow relegation rivals Pro Vercelli, Ettore Marchi with a 94th minute pen for the Leoni as the Amaranto drop third from bottom.

Como and Virtus Entella played out a 1-1 draw at the Sinigaglia. Francesco Caputo with the goal for Entella and a Simone Iacoponi own goal getting Como level. A result that does little for either side.

The final match of the weekend was another big six-pointer down towards the bottom between Ascoli and Vicenza. In the end it would be the Biancorossi who would go home with the big three points. An Ebagua double doing the damage as they move above Livorno into 19th. 1-2 it finished.

View Table HERE.

Week 33 Results:

Ascoli 1-2 Vicenza, Avellino 0-0 Crotone, Cesena 3-0 Latina, Como 1-1 Virtus Entella, Livorno 0-1 Pro Vercelli, Modena 1-2 Cagliari, Spezia 1-2 Trapani, Ternana 1-0 Pescara, Virtus Lanciano 0-1 Perugia, Brescia 0-0 Novara, Salernitana 3-4 Bari

Three new names could be featured in the Starting XI tomorrow as Conte sticks with his 3-4-3 formation.

The Azzurri are set to retain their 3-4-3 formation against Germany but a new attacking trio could feature from the opening minute. As per La Gazzetta dello Sport, Antonio Conte tested out the trident of Insigne, Zaza and Bernardeschi up front. The morning training session included a mix of technical and tactical drills, along with athletic as the players split their time between the gym and field.

Conte had split the squad into two teams after the first session, sticking with his 3-4-3 set-up. Aside from the aforementioned trio, the back three consisted of Darmian, Bonucci and Acerbi. In the midfield, Florenzi and Giaccherini occupied roles on the flanks while Montolivo and Motta made up the central duo. Federico Ricci: What Should Roma Do With Him?

Federico Ricci, Roma’s 21 year old talent who is currently having a break out season with Crotone, 9 goals and 6 assists and has the Serie B side in 2nd place, a point behind 1st and is leading them to a promotion to Serie A.

This has led to a call up to the U21 Italy side, where he made his debut vs Ireland earlier this week. His performances with Crotone have also caught the eye of other clubs and Anderlecht in fact are reportedly ready to make an offer of €10m for the youngster. Roman born, it’s easy why many want him to stay. Homegrown talent is always the best talent. Today we tackle the question, what should Roma do with Federico Ricci?

Federico Ricci: “Following the path of Florenzi would be a dream. I hope I return to Roma.”
Those were the words of the young winger at the start of the season. He’s never been shy to show his desire to return to Roma and his current form gives him the chance to do so. For Ricci, he’s a product of the Roma youth academy and was given a promotion to the first team by at the time Roma coach Rudi Garcia in the 2013-14 season. His debut for Roma was a bench appearance when Roma were 1-0 down vs Atalanta in 2013, where his appearance helped Roma salvage a late 1-1 draw. For the Italian there has always been pressure, he came out of the Primavera looked at as one of Roma’s hottest prospects, and being from Rome even added on more pressure for him to succeed and there’s no questioning why he cannot reach stardom in Rome.
A Mini Scouting Report
He’s a very technically gifted attacker with a great eye for goal and he’s a great passer. He may not be that Salah-type guy with the crazy pace but he’s a very smart and intelligent player who knows the game well. He’s someone who hustles hard for his team. In his first start for Roma vs Genoa in 2014, the Italian played on the wing in a 4-3-3 and he completed all of his attempted 24 passes. He’s versatile as well, he’s become a regular winger for Crotone but he’s also been used in the middle and behind the striker as an attacking midfielder. Ricci can score and provide assists but for me it’s his overall game that makes him such a good player. He can effective even without scoring or grabbing an assist.
Federico Ricci in December: “I want to reach my personal goals & I hope to do it with Roma, as I’m a big Giallorossi fan.”
I don’t think there’s much that beats seeing a homegrown player have success with his hometown city. Federico Ricci has the desire to return to Roma and make history. He wants to follow in the footsteps of Totti, De Rossi and Florenzi and have a career at the club he grew up watching. What should Roma do with him? I think it’s simple, Roma should keep him. He’s without a doubt talented and he has the ability to succeed, now it’s up to Roma to give him the chance. As of now, Luciano Spalletti has blocked any possible transfer for him as he wants him to train with Roma this summer so he can get a good look at the Roman born talent, and something tells me it’s Luciano Spalletti who can turn Federico Ricci into a Roman star.

Juventus, Hernanes: ”We Must Show Our Strength In The Final Sprint”

Hernanes says Juventus must fight until the end and look to push forward with few games left and a Coppa Italia Final still to play.

In an interview with JTV, Hernanes spoke about his season so far with Juventus and how the club is heading in the right direction after a rough start to the campaign:

After a start to the season which we were not at our best, we’ve fixed everything. I have settled well and I am happy to be here in Torino. I believe this is can be seen on the pitch as well. We are going through a good period, we have found our pace and the right mentality after an underwhelming start to the season. No we must show our strength because great athletes are seen in the final sprint. There are eight games remaining, plus the Coppa Italia Final therefore we have to keep pushing forward to finish in front of everyone.

The Scudetto race will be a balanced one because the squads that are chasing us are doing well and the Coppa Italia Final is a one-off game where anything can happen. We want to finish the season in a great style and we will confront the final sprint with all our strength.

The Brazilian also provided his thoughts on the upcoming fixture against Empoli and their Champions League elimination by Bayern Munich:

We have to go into the game against Empoli with the right approach because now we cannot afford to get things wrong. In Italy, no game is won or lost before playing, you have to earn everything on the pitch.

We must not have any regrets of losing to Bayern but have the awareness that we played up to par. It was a balanced tie and Bayern did not particularly worry me because I thought we could go through. We learned a lot from both games. Therefore there are no regrets, we hold our heads high and we are already thinking about next year because we must face teams of that level with even more awareness and conviction to gain satisfaction in Europe too.

In an interview via Italy’s official Youtube channel, Roma’s Stephan El Shaarawy spoke about wearing the National Team jersey and why he chose to sign with Roma:

What did we learn from Italy’s draw versus Spain?

Italy vs. Spain is a matchup that deserves to be remembered for more than a terrible away kit and a mishmash of squad players.

Unfortunately tonight’s match in Udine was exactly that, two half-hearted teams contesting a game that seemed more like a training exercise. If only this match had been played behind closed doors, as the first hour was extremely tedious to say the least and Spain’s pizza style strip only made the spectators hungry for something different.

Finally, Conte obliged as Lorenzo Insigne entered the fray and transformed the game completely. His pace and guile was exactly what the game needed as he fired the Azzurri into the lead. However Italy’s lead was only brief, Spain scrambled home an equaliser by virtue of some poor defending and lazy officiating. The result was 1-1 but this was an irrelevance, much like the fixture in general. All players despite being physically present in the game were mentally withdrawn from the action. Instead they were focused on their club duties and understandably so. During one of the most critical periods in the domestic football calendar it seems nonsensical for players to participate in a meaningless international friendly.

So what did we learn from the match?

The generational crossover the Italian squad is undergoing, as has often been the case prior to an Italy game, dictated the pre-match amble. Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon are approaching the end of their international careers; we all know that, although Jorginho and Gianluigi Donnarumma were handed 4 minutes between them to prove themselves as potential successors to the two aforementioned legends of the game. Until the introduction of Insigne, only Antonio Candreva seemed remotely interested in attacking the frail Spanish defence. And frail it was, it is clear to see that the Spanish are not the force they once were, meaning that Conte’s men mustn’t get too carried with the draw (a result that would have been a remarkable achievement 4 years ago, when Spain were much stronger).

However Conte’s tactics, which are considered negative even by the Italians, may just work in Italy’s favour come the EURO’s in ten weeks time. A strong defence will go a long way to winning the tournament in France and Conte is a mastermind when it comes to organising a backline.

Therefore the primary concern will be in the attacking third of the field. Insigne’s display was promising although the lack of striking talent within the Italian ranks will surely be a concern for Conte before he selects his final squad; Luca Toni Garziano Pelle is not. In fact, the days when the likes of Alessandro Del Piero and Christian Vieri were warming the Italian bench must seem like a fond but distant memory to the Azzurri faithful.

Both teams had notable absentees, so should they meet at the EURO’s we can expect a completely different game, thankfully. Although not too dissimilar, should Thiago Motta play he’ll probably be booked as he was tonight and Simone Zaza will predictably sport a pair of suspiciously sculpted eyebrows for the final twenty minutes of the game.

One thing is for sure; Sebastian Giovinco is definitely good enough to score goals for this Italian team. This match certainly succeeded in revealing what this current Italy side is lacking and that may just help Conte’s quest for European Championship glory.

Bologna, Giaccherini’s Agent: ”He Will Return To Sunderland In June”

Emanuele Giaccherini is going to be heading back to Sunderland at the end of the season, unless an offer is made by Bologna, as per his agent.

Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, Emanuele Giaccherini’s Furio Valcareggi discussed his client’s future and impending return to England.

One thing is for sure, Giaccherini will return to Sunderland at the end of his loan. The agreement with Bologna was a dry loan with an option to buy. He still has a year left on his contract with the English club, who are in a financial situation which will permit them to evaluate the best options. Of course, talking about his future now is premature and we will have to see if Sunderland stays up.

Valcareggi was asked if there was still a possibility that Giaccherini remains at Bologna:

There would have to be an offer. Emanuele is doing well at Bologna and they are happy with him. We will see.

Italy Player Ratings vs Spain

The Italian national team took on international rivals Spain in a friendly on Thursday, and although the Azzurri found the first goal of the match, La Roja scored only three minutes later off of a set-piece to secure the 1-1 draw.

This is how we rated the individual performances of Italy’s players following their draw against Spain.

Goalkeeper

Buffon (7.0): The 38-year-old did not have much to do as Spain only mustered three shots in the match, two of those coming on one play. The Juventus shot-stopper made a good save on the original attempt, but was not able to gather the ball in, leading to the second opportunity which Aritz Aduriz put away for Spain’s equalizer.

Defense

Astori (6.5): The 29-year-0ld was decent in the three man backline for Italy, but was arguably the least impressive of Italy’s defense.

Bonucci (7.0): The Juventus defender did well whenever Spain made it past the Italy’s midfield which stymied la roja for much of the match.

Darmian (6.6): The Manchester United fullback made some good plays but was only barely more impressive than Astori.

Midfield

Florenzi (6.5): Made good runs up the right side of the midfield and was able to link with Candreva. The Roma man was subbed off for De Silvestri in the 89th minute.

Parolo (7.0): Played impressively, but conceded too many fouls in the midfield.

Motta (7.0): Italy’s midfield was effective against the Spanish attack and Motta was the clear leader down the center of the pitch.

Giaccherini (6.5): The Bologna man played decently in the midfield helping on the left side defense.

Forwards

Candreva (7.0): The Lazio star supplied a lot of the Azzurri’s offense in the first half before being replaced by debutante, Federico Bernardeschi in the second half.

Pelle (6.5): Made some good plays holding up possession well. The Southampton striker had a few opportunities, but was never able to find a goal before being subbed off for Morata.

Eder (6.5): Linked up with Pelle well in the front, but was overshadowed when he was subbed off for Lorenzo Insigne who stole the show in the second half.

Substitutes

Insigne (8.0): As mentioned above, the Napoli man stole the show, scoring a goal after being subbed on at half time and continued to create offense for the Azzurri.

Zaza (7.5): Subbed on for Graziano Pelle, the Juventus striker continued where his predecessor left off in holding the ball up right outside of the box and dishing to his midfielders and wings.

Bernardeschi (7.0): The Fiorentina man made his national team debut and had some good runs in his first performance. Definitely a name that should be on Conte’s shortlist for the Euro’s.

Antonelli (N/A): The player was not on the pitch long enough to properly assess his performance.

De Silvestri (N/A): The player was not on the pitch long enough to properly assess his performance.

Jorginho (N/A): The player was not on the pitch long enough to properly assess his performance.

Azzurri, Conte: ”I Got The Response I Was Looking For”

Antonio Conte was happy with the approach of his squad and satisfied with the type of response he received from them.

Following Italy’s 1-1 draw against Spain, Azzurri CT Antonio Conte spoke to Rai Sport about his satisfaction with his team’s performance:

The draw against Romania was an unfair one, we also conceded a goal on a set-piece again today. I was told that Aduriz’s goal was offside but it is what it is. We had a good attitude. I got the response I was looking for and it was not easy because we played against a strong squad. We must continue to work with humility, focusing on the enthusiasm of these boys. I have little to reproach them for, we must put our heads heads and keep moving forward.

Conte was then asked about his squad seeming to be more of a team in respect to Spain:

Yes but I can assure every Italian supporter that we will continue to be a team. This is a great group made up of good players who love to wear this jersey. We can stay calm, we will try to do our best. These are useful games to increase the international experience for some of these boys. I am disappointed with the draw, I wanted to win.

Finally, Conte commented on the substitutions that impacted his team’s performance in the 2nd half.

Candreva, Eder and Pelle did well in the first half. It is clear if at the 60th minute you can make three key changes, the story will change.

Italy’s Backup Brigade shines, proves Conte has options

Today’s match was more of a story for who was absent, rather than who played.

Both Italy and Spain had several players out and in the first half of the match it definitely showed. A massive drop in quality between the two sides that took away from the spectacle of one of Europe’s most coveted rivalries.

Head coach Antonio Conte started with a 3-4-3 with Darmian, Bonucci and Astori making up the defensive trio, an interesting selection, especially with Darmian moving to a more central role. However, Conte stated before the match that he was looking for multiple players with the ability to play multiple roles. That makes a lot of sense, given how in past tournaments injuries have played a role in the Azzurri set up, and with a locked in 23 man squad you simply can’t call in another player to come in.

Darmian, in my opinion, played very well against a plethora of different Spanish attackers, although I certainly wouldn’t want him to start there with a healthy Giorgio Chiellini or Andrea Barzagli available.

The midfield was a bit tricky, however Conte was able to overwhelm Vincente Del Bosque’s men with a quadrant that featured Florenzi and Giaccherini on the wings with Parolo and Thiago Motta in the center. Surprisingly, we saw that Thiago Motta is in fantastic shape and could be the Daniele De Rossi replacement should Conte give the Roma player the snub.

In the likely scenario that Conte calls up one of Andrea Pirlo, Thiago Motta or Daniele De Rossi, the Brazil born Motta made a strong case for his inclusion this summer with the Azzurri.

Alessandro Florenzi and Emanuele Giaccherini made a strong impression today and will most likely both be on the plane to France this summer.

The real story tonight is how much of an impact Lorenzo Insigne made. Besides scoring the lone Azzurri goal this evening, the Napoli forward completely changed the flow of the attack for the Italians and was a clear and present step up from Eder. Tonight’s makeshift Azzurri didn’t have a real creative and threatening forward on the starting lineup, but when he came on the field in the 50th minute, it was game on.

Another strong performance tonight came from Lazio winger Antonio Candreva, he tested David De Gea in the first half and caused problems down the Spanish flank the whole time he was on the pitch. With performances like this, he shouldn’t have to worry about his place on the roster come June.

Federico Bernardeschi had a good cameo tonight as well, he caused problems with his link-up play and runs in the second half, he nearly even assisted Lorenzo Insigne for a second goal. Bernardeschi doesn’t have a lot of time to make a strong case for his inclusion on the final roster, but if he can perform like this against Germany, Scotland and Finland, he may have an outside shot.

Lorenzo De Silvestri and Jorginho came onto the pitch in the 88th minute, naturally they didn’t have much time to offer anything significant but the news with them is De Silvestri was able to return from an ACL injury and Jorginho made his senior Azzurri debut.

Although the scoreline wasn’t entirely in Italy’s favor, a dominating performance over Spain will do the Nazionale a world of good in their preparations for the Euro 2016 finals.

Fabio Capello: ”Cruyff Was An Icon”

Fabio Capello calls Johan Cruyff a football icon and talks about how the sport has lost one of its symbols.

In an interview with Tuttomercatoweb, Fabio Capello remembers legendary Dutch player Johan Cruyff and spoke about his recent passing:

A champion has passed away. As a player and as a coach, he was one of the greatest in the history of football. A person, or rather a full-fledged icon of not only football, but also of sport. I have a very good relationship with him. I am saddened that a symbol of football has left us.

Capello was then asked if there was a particular anecdote that he remembers about Cruyf:

There are many moments that come to mind. On a personal level, when he had something to say, he always said it to you, he never kept it inside of him. He was one of the few to make a difference as a player and as a coach, both at Ajax and at Barcelona, which is not easy. He was an icon.

Flares in Calcio: Ticking Time Bombs

The following story is of Vincenzo Paparelli, a fan attending a Derby della Capitale on the 28th of October, 1979. I was inspired to write this while reading John Foot’s Winning at All Costs, from which the following information was gathered:

Angelo Paparelli couldn’t make the Rome derby on 28 October 1979. He lent his season ticket to his brother, Vincenzo, a car mechanic born in 1936, who went along to the game with his wife, Wanda.

In order to get a good view for the Rome derby, you need to get there early. Vincenzo arrived more than an hour before kick-off, and grabbed a bite to eat on the way in. Shortly after they had sat down in the packed curva nord, Vincenzo’s wife heard a kind of phhhfff sound. She turned to her husband to see him slumped forward. Something was sticking out of his head and blood had splashed onto other spectators. Her immediate reaction was to pull the object out. It had penetrated his brain through his left eye, and smoke was still coming out of its tail. The item lodged in Vincenzo’s skull was a nautical rocket and it had flown something like 160 metres over the whole pitch to embed itself in the head of the young father of two. A doctor who tried to save Paparelli later spoke of a “war injury.” Vincenzo died on the way to hospital. The game continued, amidst violent scenes as the Lazio fans tried to invade the pitch. Rome declared a day of mourning and the whole Lazio team attended Paparelli’s funeral.

The rocket had been “smuggled” into the stadium and launched by an eighteen-year-old fan, Giovanni Fiorillo. In 1993 Fiorillo died of a drug overdose.

PHOTO: Vincenzo Paparelli and his two young children.

I’ll end the story there. The point isn’t to blame either team, either person, the police, or even at the FIGC. The fact of the matter is that day in 1979, a father of two young children lost his life at a football match; something that should never, ever have occurred.

Now if you’re starting to think of me as some pacifist, library-loving guy who just wants peace, well that is wrong. Roma needs the 12th man, Roma needs the Curva Sud. We also need a new stadium that houses the Curva Sud. But what we can’t have anymore is rockets and bombs inside a damn stadium. That was 37 years ago, and I’m not sure much has changed. But aside from the restrictions that the city has imposed in the Curva Sud, which has nothing to do with what I’m saying, what needs to be produced is an alternative to flares. Something like a smoke canister, some type of safe alternative that would keep explosive devices outside a stadium, albeit a Roman stadium, from hurting anyone again.

Did Milan Give Up Too Soon On Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s former agent Yvan Le Mee has hit out at AC Milan, claiming that his former client was “mistreated” during his youth years with the club.

After leaving Milan’s Youth Sector failing to find playing time, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was loaned out several times to clubs Dijon, Lille and Monaco. After tallying 12 goals in eighty-four matches through those three years, the rossoneri decided to sell the Gabon international to St.Etienne for a minuscule 1.8 million euro. He eventually took Ligue 1 by storm scoring 41 times in 97 matches across all competitions, sticking it to his former club in Italy.

After two breakout campaigns with St.Etienne, German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund purchased the speedster for 13 million euro in 2013, bolstering an already lethal attacking unit which included Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski. Since settling down in Germany with the 12-13 UEFA Champions League runner-up, Aubameyang has become one of the more prolific threats in Europe, having recorded a stellar 76 goals in 134 games, according to transfermarkt.

The Borussia Dortumund striker’s former agent had this to say about Aubameyang’s time at Milan, via goal.com:

“Aubameyang was scoring some amazing goals for Milan, but we realized that he was not playing much with Milan’s Primavera [youth] team because their coach favored Italian players over him and kept Auba out of the team” Le Mee told Le 10 Sport.

Le Mee on his former client’s eventual departure from the seven-time Champions League winners:

“At that time, we got in touch with Dijon over a transfer. After pushing really hard for six months, Milan eventually accepted a loan offer from Dijon.”

While it is easy to blame Milan for selling Aubameyang now, through his three years at the senior level, Milan had a solid core of forwards. Those attackers included Andriy Shevchenko, Filippo Inzaghi, Alberto Gilardino, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alexandre Pato, and a young Alberto Paloschi. It seemed very unlikely at that time for the reigning African Player of the Year winner to receive any substantial playing time at a team that was battling for the Champions League and Serie A title on a yearly basis.

As for his time at the youth level, it is interesting to note how Le Mee claims Italian players were favored over him. This has been a sensitive issue in Italy in recent years as many wonder why foreign players are given more playing time than young promising home grown talent. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the youth and scouting staff to identify what type of player Aubameyang could develop into. The fact they once held a superstar player in their system is what makes it difficult for fans to wrap their head around.

Azzurri, Conte: ”I Already Have An Idea On Who Will Be Selected”

Italy CT Antonio Conte will be paying close attention to the next two friendlies and already has in mind who he may bring to France in June.

With two important friendlies in the coming days for Italy, Antonio Conte addressed the media today in a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s first game against Spain:

On it being difficult to talk about football after the attacks in Brussels & security issues for the EURO:

This is the second time it has happened in a span of four months, we find ourselves reliving these horrible moments. What has happened should heighten the level of attention. The EUROs, like the World Cup, is a festival for the people of all the countries participating in it and it should be celebrated. I hope these events do not cause problems for something which has always brought passion and enthusiasm to people. I hope there will be great deal of security and that we do not get used to these horrific events. Attention must remain at the highest level.

We certainly cannot let what happened pass us by without mention. It affects us deeply and it is frightening. When there is a sporting event, we have to prepare for it in the best way possible. It is the right way to respond to those who want to frighten us. We must transmit joy.

On if the friendlies will have an effect on his selection for the EURO:

These matches have significant value because there are no other friendlies afterwards. They are two matches that I will observe carefully, we called up quite a large squad. I wanted to see more players but it was not possible and we will search to find answers in these two matches. Most importantly, we must see in training if the new arrivals can be useful for the EUROs. For those that aren’t here (in response to a question about De Rossi), I will pay close attention to everything in the next two months. I will also monitor the MLS where Giovinco plays. However, I already have an idea on who will be selected

On what he expects to see tomorrow and what formation will he use:

What I expect to see is what we have tried in training. It is not easy to prepare for a match with players who you do not see often. Like always though, I have extraordinary players who absorb information like sponges. I expect to see what we prepared for against one of the favorites to list the EURO trophy.. We are missing players who had played in the previous games. I want clear answers on everyone, it will be an important occasion for them. I think you know my formation, you saw everything today!

On the 3-4-3 system being beneficial for the players:

I think it is a step forward. From this point of view, I am happy and satisfied. At the EURO, we will arrive with a squad, not a handful of selections. Finding different alternatives without changing our principles can be an added value. I have confidence because of the way these boys have trained.

On if it was the right time to announce he was leaving the NT?

I was asked from the press to clarify my position for the good of the National Team and not to head to the European Championship without having clarified my destiny. I had asked for fairness and I believe it was given. It is disappointing that often you see people trying to create problems in everything you do. This is a fantastic experience and I have never regretted my choice. Coaching a club is one thing, coaching your country’s National Team is another. It brings you immense pride.

When I arrived, I was promised to work a lot more than I did. I did not want to disrespect anyone. I thought I was going to do more in this role but it did not end up happening. I hope all of Italy will support us in June and help us close the gap that we currently have with other teams. We have created a team that is very important for such a tournament.

Juventus Identify Four Names For The Post-Pogba

Juventus are bracing for the life after Paul Pogba and have identified four players to replace the Frenchman should he leave.

After yet another impressive season with Juventus, there is plenty of interest from Europe’s mega clubs for Paul Pogba. As a result, the bianconeri may have their hands full in trying to keep him beyond this summer. According to Sky Sports, Juventus will target one of the following players if they lose the former Manchester United man this summer: Valencia’s Andre Gomes, Real Madrid’s Isco, Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan and Roma’s Radja Nainggolan.

While we have already reported that Juventus will target Nainggolan and Andre Gomes should Pogba leave, the names of Gundogan and Isco have only recently popped up. The former is reportedly on his way out from Borussia Dortmund and is attracting interest from Pep Guardiola’s next club Manchester City. Isco, on the other hand, is one the outskirts of the first team at Real Madrid and has emerged as a potential target for Juventus.

Inter Are Interested In Sampdoria’s Joaquin Correa

Inter have reportedly set their sights on yet another Sampdoria forward to bolster their attacking ranks this summer.

After signing Eder from Sampdoria, Roberto Mancini’s side have shifted their attention to the blucerchiati’s Argentinian wonder-kid Joaquin Correa, as per FcInterNews.it. The player has been in sensational form this season and is attracting interest from Italy and abroad.

Correa, however, has a contract with the side until 2019 further complicating a transfer. That said, Sampdoria and Inter have done plenty of business together recently highlighting their positive relationship. Moreover, both of Inter’s Andrea Ranocchia and Dodo are currently on loan there and could potentially enter a future transaction involving Correa. While at the moment Inter are solely interested in Correa, the conditions for a possible transfer to the nerazzurri are there.

Veicno Is Sarri’s First Choice For The Midfield But Identifies Alternatives

Maurizio Sarri is said to be a keen admirer of Fiorentina’s Matias Vecino and wants to reinforce his midfield ranks at Napoli with him.

According to Tuttosport, Napoli are seriously interested in Fiorentina’s Matias Vecino and he remains their primary transfer target for the midfield in the summer. If they are unable to acquire the midfielder, Sarri will then shift his attention to Piotr Zielinski, who is having a fantastic season with Empoli at the moment.

Another player that may be on the partenopei’s summer transfer list is Valencia’s Andre Gomes. Recently, it’s been reported that the player is receiving interest from Juventus therefore a move to Italy may be on the horizon. Other players that Sarri will target this summer are Ajax’s Davy Klaasen and Atalanta’s Marten de Roon. However, the former is concerned with a lack of playing time therefore he isn’t open to a move to Italy. That said, de Roon is reportedly pleased with Napoli’s interest and would welcome a move to the club with open arms.

Marotta: “The Conditions To Keep Pogba Are There.”

Juventus sporting director Giuseppe Marotta spoke about the transfer window among other things at the inauguration of the club’s new J Medical wing.

In an interview with TuttoJuve.com, the former Sampdoria director said,:

“Before anything happens with Morata, there needs to be an agreement with Real Madrid and Juventus. I can only repeat that our decision was a calculated one. We are proud in having Morata. It’s clear that their option for redemption is a hit from Damocles’ sword that we had to endure. But we will talk to them and find a solution that sees us keep him.”

On Pogba’s and Cuadrado’s future:

“The conditions to keep him beyond next season are here. In regards to Cuadrado, we have to talk to Chelsea and think hard about it.”

On Allegri and his potential departure:

“He has a contract, but like I have always said, a contract with a manager is a formality. The important thing is that the club and the manager work in harmony towards certain objectives. We have a lot of objectives to reach this season. We have the league to win and a Coppa Italia to win. With Allegri, we have a great relationship. It’s based off trust and satisfaction on his part. Therefore it’s a marriage that has brought great joy to all parties. The conditions are in place for him to stay because the extension of his contract is a formality. Like i’ve said before, we can create a winning cycle together.”

On the refereeing controversies:

“There is a structural difference between the league and the Champions League. The Champions League is a competition where one moment can eliminate you like it happened against Bayern Munich. Therefore the error is decisive. In the league, I maintain, a team’s quality will always emerge victorious in the end despite human refereeing errors. The fact that we’re in first has nothing to do with the game against Torino but because we deserved it after winning all these games. It’s normal that there are a few refereeing errors that even instant replay can’t fix. I’ve heard that Bonucci should have been sent off instead of simply being booked. However, I believe Rizzoli chose to only book him because he didn’t see any behaviour from him that warranted a sending off.”
