With two important friendlies in the coming days for Italy, Antonio Conte addressed the media today in a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s first game against Spain:
On it being difficult to talk about football after the attacks in Brussels & security issues for the EURO:
This is the second time it has happened in a span of four months, we find ourselves reliving these horrible moments. What has happened should heighten the level of attention. The EUROs, like the World Cup, is a festival for the people of all the countries participating in it and it should be celebrated. I hope these events do not cause problems for something which has always brought passion and enthusiasm to people. I hope there will be great deal of security and that we do not get used to these horrific events. Attention must remain at the highest level.
We certainly cannot let what happened pass us by without mention. It affects us deeply and it is frightening. When there is a sporting event, we have to prepare for it in the best way possible. It is the right way to respond to those who want to frighten us. We must transmit joy.
On if the friendlies will have an effect on his selection for the EURO:
These matches have significant value because there are no other friendlies afterwards. They are two matches that I will observe carefully, we called up quite a large squad. I wanted to see more players but it was not possible and we will search to find answers in these two matches. Most importantly, we must see in training if the new arrivals can be useful for the EUROs. On the 3-4-3 system being beneficial for the players:
I think it is a step forward. From this point of view, I am happy and satisfied. At the EURO, we will arrive with a squad, not a handful of selections. Finding different alternatives without changing our principles can be an added value. I have confidence because of the way these boys have trained.
On if it was the right time to announce he was leaving the NT?
I was asked from the press to clarify my position for the good of the National Team and not to head to the European Championship without having clarified my destiny. I had asked for fairness and I believe it was given. It is disappointing that often you see people trying to create problems in everything you do. This is a fantastic experience and I have never regretted my choice. Coaching a club is one thing, coaching your country’s National Team is another. It brings you immense pride.
When I arrived, I was promised to work a lot more than I did. I did not want to disrespect anyone. I thought I was going to do more in this role but it did not end up happening. I hope all of Italy will support us in June and help us close the gap that we currently have with other teams. We have created a team that is very important for such a tournament.
