The Italian national team took on international rivals Spain in a friendly on Thursday, and although the Azzurri found the first goal of the match, La Roja scored only three minutes later off of a set-piece to secure the 1-1 draw.
This is how we rated the individual performances of Italy’s players following their draw against Spain.
Goalkeeper
Buffon (7.0): The 38-year-old did not have much to do as Spain only mustered three shots in the match, two of those coming on one play. The Juventus shot-stopper made a good save on the original attempt, but was not able to gather the ball in, leading to the second opportunity which Aritz Aduriz put away for Spain’s equalizer.
Defense
Astori (6.5): The 29-year-0ld was decent in the three man backline for Italy, but was arguably the least impressive of Italy’s defense.
Bonucci (7.0): The Juventus defender did well whenever Spain made it past the Italy’s midfield which stymied la roja for much of the match.
Darmian (6.6): The Manchester United fullback made some good plays but was only barely more impressive than Astori.
Midfield
Florenzi (6.5): Made good runs up the right side of the midfield and was able to link with Candreva. The Roma man was subbed off for De Silvestri in the 89th minute.
Parolo (7.0): Played impressively, but conceded too many fouls in the midfield.
Motta (7.0): Italy’s midfield was effective against the Spanish attack and Motta was the clear leader down the center of the pitch.
Giaccherini (6.5): The Bologna man played decently in the midfield helping on the left side defense.
Forwards
Candreva (7.0): The Lazio star supplied a lot of the Azzurri’s offense in the first half before being replaced by debutante, Federico Bernardeschi in the second half.
Pelle (6.5): Made some good plays holding up possession well. The Southampton striker had a few opportunities, but was never able to find a goal before being subbed off for Morata.
Eder (6.5): Linked up with Pelle well in the front, but was overshadowed when he was subbed off for Lorenzo Insigne who stole the show in the second half.
Substitutes
Insigne (8.0): As mentioned above, the Napoli man stole the show, scoring a goal after being subbed on at half time and continued to create offense for the Azzurri.
Zaza (7.5): Subbed on for Graziano Pelle, the Juventus striker continued where his predecessor left off in holding the ball up right outside of the box and dishing to his midfielders and wings.
Bernardeschi (7.0): The Fiorentina man made his national team debut and had some good runs in his first performance. Definitely a name that should be on Conte’s shortlist for the Euro’s.
Antonelli (N/A): The player was not on the pitch long enough to properly assess his performance.
De Silvestri (N/A): The player was not on the pitch long enough to properly assess his performance.
Jorginho (N/A): The player was not on the pitch long enough to properly assess his performance.
