Italy struggled to find anything offensively against the reigning World Cup champion Germany and defensively they gave up four goals in a 4-1 loss.
This is how we rated the individual performances of Italy’s players against Germany.
Goalkeeper
Buffon (4.0): The 38-year-old was lacking much help from the Italian backline, but his reactions could have been better. Gave Germany a penalty for their fourth goal.
Defenders
Acerbi (2.0): The Germans were constantly getting past Italy’s backline and the Sassuolo man was caught out on quite a few occasions.
Bonucci (3.0): Did not show the leadership that was required for an inexperienced Italy backline. The Juventus defender slipped on Germany’s third goal and went off injured.
Darmian (2.0): The Manchester United fullback struggled to play in a more central role. His poor defending played a part in at least two German goals.
Midfielders
Florenzi (4.0): The Roma man had a few wayward passes and was not able to have the same impact as he did in the match against Spain.
Montolivo (2.5): Struggled to contain Germany’s midfield guys and blew Italy’s best offensive chance by sending the ball well wide off of a set piece.
Motta (3.0): The 33-year-old didn’t have nearly the impact he had against Spain and struggled to contain Germany’s midfield.
Giaccherini (2.5): Did not make his presence felt much during the match and was nearly invisible most of the time.
Forwards
Bernardeschi (4.0): The young winger did not help create much offense in his first international start.
Zaza (3.5): The Juventus striker was not given good service which is an essential part of his game.
Insigne (4.0): Had some of Italy’s best touches and dribbles, but had a few wayward services on set-pieces.
Substitutes
De Silvestri (3.0): The Sampdoria man replaced Florenzi and didn’t help the Italian cause at all.
Ranocchia (2.5): Replaced the injured Bonucci and let Germany past leading to the penalty on Buffon.
Parolo (3.0): Didn’t make an impact taking the place of Motta.
El Sharaawy (5.0): Italy looked much better when the Roma man was on the ball. He score the Azzurri’s only goal and found Okaka for a good opportunity.
Okaka (3.5): Took his best opportunity straight into the arms of Germany’s goalkeeper Ter Stegen.
Antonelli (N/A): The player was not on the pitch long enough to properly asses his performance.
