Stefano Pioli laments the way Lazio went out of the Europa League as a multitude of errors cost them dearly against Sparta Prague.
After failing to qualify for the Quarter-Finals of the Europa League due to a 3-0 loss (4-1 agg) on home turf to Sparta Prague, Stefano Pioli spoke to Sky about his squad’s errors that ultimately led to elimination:
It is our responsibility, just as our opponents deserve credit. We made too many mistakes. We cannot go down two goals after 12 minutes, then it becomes much more difficult. That decided everything and it is a great shame. It means that our opponents where better at taking advantage of mistakes.
It is not the first time we start off with a handicap. We are working on it but we have yet to find a solution. Going into a negative campaign like ours, against a strong opponent, everything is far more difficult. Now there is the league where we have great pride in. We must show we can still have our say.
On it being a question of having the wrong approach:
There is disappointment, we wanted to qualify but we had the wrong approach for the match. Unfortunately, it is the reality. The season started badly and it became harder to surpass the difficulties. We had a good start in the Europa League but today we got it wrong. We were attacking, but compact. Both goals compromised everything. It is a shame because we showed we had the quality to do well and then the 3-0 scoreline created a mountain too high for us to climb.
On if he is worried about returning to the league campaign:
Yes, certainly. It is a negative moment for us and we must do well to work on the player’s heads
