Forget Pogba, forget Higuain, forget Icardi and take a look at Domenico Berardi.
Sassuolo were given a doubtful eye to make it to the Europa League group stage this season. Finishing 6th in Serie A last year only guarantees you a spot in the early stages of the qualification process. The Neroverdi from Italy were initially drawn with Swiss side Luzern, and then Red Star Belgrade.
After being the Serbians in the first leg 3-0, qualification is all but assured heading into the return.
Sassuolo is an intriguing side full of young players who are predominately Italian. A rarity in the modern game to say the least. But take a look at Domenico Berardi, the prodigal heir to the golden age of Italian superstars.
In just four competitive matches, he’s already knocked home five goals. He’s simply in scintillating form, last night against Palermo he should have had more than just one goal. He cracked the crossbar with one of his efforts and gave Posavec a headache all night long.
What makes Berardi so special is the fact he hasn’t rushed a move to a big side, he’s crafting his trade and it’s paying tremendous dividends. Depending on the group Sassuolo is drawn into in the Europa League, he could potentially slam home many goals and be the talisman they need to do something truly special.
So while the season is just starting to heat up, Berardi’s hit the ground running. Five goals, and an assist in just the first four matches of the campaign goes to show he’s not playing around this year.
