After missing the team’s 2-2 draw against Pescara, Jorginho is scheduled to make his first start of the season this Saturday at the San Paolo against AC Milan.
With the absence of Gonzalo Higuain, it is obvious that Napoli will be forced to change their playing style to a more collective approach, as they do not have a talisman like El Pipita leading the line. As nerve-racking as that may seem to the Partenopei, they are still expected to be one of the strongest teams in Serie A on paper along with Juventus and Roma.
The Rossoneri will be visiting Napoli this weekend and it will be Jorginho who sits in the center of the pitch pulling the strings for Sarri’s men. He will be featuring in his preferred central role, which should see him heavily involved in his team’s build up play. Jorge, (as they call him in Castel Volturno) has thrived in Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 and fits like a glove in a 3-5-2 formation with two interior midfielders on his sides. Perhaps someone should have passed that message onto Conte, who opted for Juventus’ Stefano Sturaro instead of the italo-brazilian.
His exclusion from Italy’s squad did not sit well with the 24 year-old, as he had chosen to represent Italy over Brazil at the international level. This however did not stop him from cheering on his teammates, fully aware that he deserved a spot on the roster after a very positive 2015-16 campaign. Following his vacation, Jorginho returned to Dimaro with one goal, to completely establish himself as Napoli’s brain in the midfield and fully earn his spot on Giampiero Ventura’s Italy roster as Marco Verratti’s biggest competition.
With Higuain’s absence and a new offensive scheme, Sarri will expect Jorginho to be more in control of Napoli’s vertical gameplay. His first test will arrive on Saturday against Montella’s Milan team who last week proved to be a squad that will rely heavily on ball possession. A new season is around the corner for Jorginho, one that may see him turn into one of the league’s most elite midfielders.
