Napoli were held to a 2-2 draw away to Pescara on the first match-day of the new Serie A season. Here is how we rated each player’s performance.
Starting XI
Pepe Reina (6): The aging Spaniard had a few questionable moments out there on the pitch today. Besides the two goals conceded, (which were not his fault) Pepe also made some key saves to keep Napoli in the tie after that diabolical first half.
Elseid Hysaj (6.5): Elseid was his typical solid self. He brought the ball forward on numerous occasions and did not let many attacks from Pescara come down his wing. Solid showing for Hysaj.
Raul Albiol (5): Raul looked very, very shaky today. Was extremely poor in the first half however he saved his performance rating by his second half display.
Kalidou Koulibaly (5.5): Just like Raul Albiol, Kalidou had a horrific first half. Was directly at fault for the first goal and could have done more to stop the second. But, much like Albiol, his second half saved his rating. He is lucky to come out with a 5.5.
Faouzi Ghoulam (5): Ghoulam was also surprisingly poor today. Did not do much to aide the attack as most of his crosses went wayward. Also, defensively he was poor throughout the night. Faouzi has seen better days.
Allan (5.5): The usually reliable Brazilian midfielder had a rather poor showing today. He lacked his typical energy in defense and attack.
Mirko Valdifiori (5): If Valdifiori keeps playing the way he did today he will never get rid of the title of “Jorginho’s substitute”. The Italian was very sloppy with the ball and did not provide much cover at all for the defense.
Marek Hamsik (6): Hamsik was definitely the best performing midfielder from Napoli today. Even in their terrible first half, Marek proved to be the only one providing any real spark in attack through Napoli’s midfield.
Lorenzo Insigne (3): Where do we even attempt to begin with Lorenzo? He was a shadow of himself from last year in this match. Showed no heart or determination on the field today and for this, he was immediately subbed off at the beginning of the second half.
Manolo Gabbiadini (4): Manolo proved many people that critique his ability to play the “9” role right today. Gabbiadini was a ghost for the whole first half and just like Insigne, was immediately subbed off at the beginning of the second half.
Jose Callejon (6.5): The Spaniard always puts in a shift for Napoli. Coming fresh off signing a new deal, Callejon proves again and again why he belongs as a starter in this Napoli squad.
Substitutes
Piotr Zielinski (6.5): The Polish international played very well in his competitive debut. He covered lots of ground in the midfield and provided lots of support for his fellow countryman Milik and Mertens.
Arkadiusz Milik (7): Another Polish international making his competitive debut, Milik provided that bit of hold-up play and overall awareness that Gabbiadini did not show in the first half. Great start to the season for Arek Milik.
Dries Mertens (8.5) MOTM: Dries Mertens was an absolute machine when he was subbed on for Insigne. Apart from the two goals scored, Mertens was also instrumental in creating attacks for Napoli and sparking a fire in all his teammates. Easily the man of the match.
