Rizzo’s 2016/17 Serie A Predictions

IFD Columnist Michael Rizzo gives his predictions for the 2016/17 Serie A campagin.

I always say there is no better sporting drama than Serie A, every week is a new episode, full of twists, turns, and surprises. This season the league look as strong as it has in recent years. While it’s difficult to make these predictions prior to the close of the transfer window, here are my predictions on the upcoming season.

I also want to remind Serie A fans about the UEFA decision to award the top four clubs from the top four leagues automatic UCL places starting in 2018. The decision almost instantly adds $1billion dollars of value to the Italian League, and attracts investments. Don’t be surprised if some clubs make significant moves to improve their infrastructure, and position themselves to compete for next season.

The major talking points this summer were the big money moves of Juventus. I’m not convinced, Juventus made themselves better for the Champions League or Serie A. I actually think that both Juventus & Napoli came out losers in the Higuain deal. However Juventus certainly have the firepower to remain on top.

  1. Juventus – The question is the midfield, want will Asamoah and Lemina bring, can Khedira & Marchiso stay healthy, will Pjanic play infront of the defense or will he eventually move behind the forwards. Regardless Juventus should have the quality to win the title yet again.
  2. Inter – Not too many people are talking about Inter, but on paper they have the second most talented team in Italy. Inter also have a lot players in the prime of their careers, and would be a difficult opponent if they can play together.
  3. Roma – Spaletti is too good a coach not to get this team into the top three.
  4. Napoli – The only guarantee to is there will be drama, but who will score the goals?
  5. AC Milan – Niang shines, and Montella gets them back on track.
  6. Lazio – Will be another example of a club in turmoil delivering results on the pitch.
  7. Fiorentina – After growing in recent years, The Viola don’t look ready to make it to the next level.
  8. Torino – I know Torino has some talent, but Serie A is just too strong for them to reach the European places.

Relegated: Pescara, Atalanta, Crotone

Player of the year – Dybala (Juventus) The next Messi looks ready to shine on the big stage.
