Stefano Sensi – The major Italian prospect nobody is talking about

Sassuolo made a significant investment in January to bring in one of Italy’s most talented youngsters.

A little bit of Daniele De Rossi mixed with Claudio Marchisio. Meet Stefano Sensi, the 21-year old Italian holding mid or ‘regista’ that is showing an incredible amount of promise.

Aided by Juventus in January, Sassuolo shelled out €5 million to Cesena to acquire him this summer. Immediately his impact has been seen at the Neroverdi as he’s appeared in three of the five official matches played so far.

His vision and passing range is admirable, it’s a throwback Daniele De Rossi – I don’t want to make the Pirlo comparison yet – but he’s much more mobile. His defensive instinct off the ball is very impressive for a player so young.

He’s not a Stefano Sturaro type player, Sensi is much more comfortable and confident on the ball and possesses a passing ability that could be compared to Verratti. Italy hasn’t produced many players like that in the past 10 years or so. Outside of Verratti there really is no heir to the Pirlo or De Rossi throne left open for the national team. However, I think we could potentially be looking at our new duo.

The ‘Old Guard’ of the Azzurri is for all intents and purposes pretty much done. The golden generation that won it all in 2006 only had three representatives at Euro 2016 and most likely will be down to just Buffon until his retirement in 2018.

Stefano Sensi would couple Marco Verratti brilliantly. We’re talking about a player that could finally bring back possession football that we saw under both Lippi and Prandelli. If Giampiero Ventura decides to introduce a whole new generation of Italians into the Azzzurri, Sensi is surely a shoe-in.

Last season for Cesena, Sensi played 34 matches in all competitions, including four goals and four assists. He was awarded the Samsung Italia award for the best young player last season. An award which Marco Verratti won himself during his time at Pescara.

He started and played the full 90 minutes against Palermo in the opening 1-0 win. His command of the midfield was clear, and for a 21-year-old that’s very eye-catching. We simply haven’t seen many youngsters come into Serie A and take the bull by the horns from the midfield.

Sassuolo are becoming known for stockpiling and playing Italian talent. Their story has been an incredible one, and if they can do to Sensi what they have done to others, we could see a player turn serious potential into unrivaled talent.
