Born in the outskirts of Naples on June 4, 1991 is a boy named Lorenzo Insigne. This boy would grow up as a “scugnizzo” or “street kid” in the Frattamaggiore comune of Naples, Italy. Little did everyone know that the boy named Lorenzo Insigne would grow up to be a star. The next footballing prodigy to come out of Naples since the likes of Fabio Cannavaro and Ciro Ferrara. Boy do we hope he can bring the same success that a certain Diego Maradona gave to his hometown club.
Career up to now: Lorenzo started his professional career with Napoli in 2009, where he was primarily used on the Napoli primavera squad. Then, when 2010 arrived he was loaned out to Foggia where he played 33 games and scored 19 goals, a great return for a 21 year old at the time. In the 2011 season, he joined Pescara and formed an incredibe trident with Ciro Immobile and Marco Verratti and got Pescara promoted to the Serie A. In that same season, Insigne played 37 games scoring 18 goals. This is what caught the attention of then Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri, and the next season Lorenzo was kept on the Napoli squad. In his first season at Napoli, he was still learning the ropes of a top flight league and did not really create much of an impact. However, in his second season he started showing early signs of being a gem. Although he did not score many goals in his early years, he was creating a multitude of chances and expressing himself through his Messi-like dribbling. After an injury setback the next season, Lorenzo still showed he was the future for Napoli, and what a future this guy has in store for himself. Now, this season, the Neapolitan magician has 6 goals through 12 games and 2 goals in the Europa League. This guy is having an amazing season so far and it is hard to argue that besides Marco Verratti, he is Italy’s next young superstar.
National team recognition: Although Insigne boasts a plethora of talent, he’s found it rather tough to make it into the Italian NT selection for friendly and qualifying matches. Besides a call-up to Brazil 2014, he hasn’t had a chance to strut his stuff on the world stage. He has played 6 games and scored 1 goal for the National Team. Italy manager Antonio Conte needs to start incorporating Lorenzo into the squad as he can be a vital piece to Italy’s success at Euro 2016, a tournament where Italy must perform well in.
Overall playing style: Lorenzo plays a very diminuitive type of football. He loves to play on the wing but does a great job as a Trequartista also. At Napoli, coach Maurizio Sarri’s new and improved 4-3-3 formation forces Lorenzo to be much higher up the pitch than ex coach Rafa Benitez had him in his 4-2-3-1. This allows Lorenzo to be able to take on defenders, cut in and shoot with that pearl of a finesse shot he has perfected over the years. He truly is a star, and hopefully he can replicate his outstanding form with Napoli with the Italian National team. The talented winger/ attacking midfielder is Italy’s best dribbler of the ball, hands down. It is hard to argue with that statement when game in and game out he is the most effective player on the dribble. He is also a masterful free kick taker. Every time he steps up for a freekick he makes the San Paolo believe that it’s a goal. His most recent goal off a free kick was against AC Milan to cap off his brace within that game.
Overall, Lorenzo Insigne is a great talent. He keeps the defender on his heels the entirety of the game and is decisive with his great vision, incredible dribbling and his masterful free kicks. He keeps Napoli fans dreaming of a third scudetto. What more is there to say about a young boy from Frattamaggiore playing for the team of his heart?
