Conte: I Need To Think About Italy Without Pirlo

Here are the highlights from Antonio Conte’s presser today in Coverciano.

Are the exclusions of Berardi and Insigne related to your recent comments about the importance of wearing the Italian National Team jersey? “Since my first interview as Italy’s coach I’ve always stressed that I want a team Italians can be proud of. I only want players that feel the Italian jersey as a second skin. Our style of play comes first, individual players are less important. Furthermore, I also evaluate my choices on an attitude basis, since I don’t want to see some kind of behaviours taking place within the group. Everyone needs to do his best to be called up, two or three goals just aren’t enough. This said, Insigne and Berardi are out because of technical reasons”. “I think there’s been some overreacting about Insigne’s situation. We should think about the bright side as well, for example, look at De Silvestri, who got injured playing for Italy and was called up as soon as he was back in shape. This is what I was talking about, I want players who are willing to sacrifice themselves for the team, like Verratti, who played against Azerbaijan despite being at risk of injury. Some other players would not have taken that risk because of fear of skipping games for their club: once you come to Coverciano, you should only think about Italy”.

Is the MLS break a problem for Pirlo and Giovinco? “Sebastian Giovinco hasn’t been called up only because of a knee injury. Pirlo isn’t with us because he skipped the last two weeks of regular season. I also need to make some further considerations. I have an immense appreciation of Pirlo and he knows it; but he’ll soon be 37 and the MLS kicks off in March. I need to think of the eventuality of an Italy team without Pirlo”.
