Fiorentina demonstrate to not be Champions League worthy

Beaten badly, embarrassed and heading back to Italy with nothing to smile about, Fiorentina proved tonight they are not ready for Europe’s biggest stage.

The directorship of Fiorentina have to bear the brunt of the backlash from tonight’s 3-0 catastrophic defeat against Premier League side Tottenham. The club has been significantly weakened during the past few transfer periods and now show no signs of being able to muster a fight against Europe’s best.

A year ago, this was a different story when the Viola took on Tottenham in the Europa League knockout stages. They had Mario Gomez, Giuseppe Rossi, Mohamed Salah, Stefan Savic and Neto. This year, the men who took the field represented a shadow of the skill last year’s team possessed.

The new coach, Paulo Sousa has worked wonders with his side, they sit in third place in Serie A, but when paired up with a foreign giant, they simply stood no match.

Team president Andrea Della Valle took for granted the incredible work of Paulo Sousa and did not spend on the reinforcements that the coach had requested. The Portuguese tactician had requested a new defender and a new midfielder to give his side the tactical flexibility they desperately needed.

The dire state of the Florence outfit is the result of poor transfer market planning and the sheer refusal to spend, now Fiorentina can hope that Sousa completes the miracle to qualify them for the Champions League, otherwise it will be another season stuck in limbo between being a Europa League hopeful and a Champions League arrival.

Sousa can’t be pleased by either his men or his bosses, and how could you blame him?
