Napoli Ratings v Fiorentina

Following their 1-1 draw against Fiorentina, here’s how we rated the performances of the Napoli players:

Pepe Reina (6.5)

Little chance with Alonso’s header for the first goal. Swept up well behind his defence, allowing them to press onto Valero and Fernandez sitting just behind Kalinic. Had no saves to make him the second-half despite Fiorentina dominating possession.

Faouzi Ghoulam (6)

Had a torrid time against Cristian Tello, and was turned inside out by him on numerous occasions in the first-half. Improved as the game went on, and provided an attacking threat in the second-half in support of Insigne.

Raul Albiol (6.5)

Had a difficult time against Kalinic, but survived unscathed despite giving away numerous fouls at the start of the second-half. Made some good clearances in the second-half.

Kalidou Koulibaly (7.5)

Lucky not to be penalised by Kalinic when giving the ball away just after half-time; the Croat hitting the bar when one-on one with Reina. Made some excellent last-ditch clearances in the last ten minutes as Fiorentina pressed for a winner.

Elseid Hysaj (6)

Faced a constant threat down his side from Marcos Alonso, and was out-jumped by the Spaniard for Fiorentina’s first goal. Like Ghoulam, improved as the game went on, and linked well with Mertens when he came on.

Allan Loureiro (5.5)

Valiantly attempted to drive Napoli forward as well as shielding his back-four in the first-half, but not the usual accomplished performance one expects. Subdued in the second-half, and it was no surprise to see Lopez replace him.

Marek Hamsik (5.5)

Had little impact on the match, offering little support to his midfield colleagues or Higuain.

Jorginho (6.5)

Neat and tidy as usual, and always available to his team-mates. Struggled a bit with the movement from Valero and Fernandez, particularly when Vecino overloaded the midfield by stepping forward. Grew into the game in the second-half, and hit some excellent long-range passes.

Lorenzo Insigne (6)

A couple of glimpses of Insigne’s brilliance, but not his usual creative threat due to being starved of the ball for much of the game. Did well to support his full-back in the second-half, running the full length of the pitch to track Tello when Ghoulam was caught upfield.

Jose Callejon (5.5)

Failed to support Hysaj behind him when he was overloaded by Alonso and Valero, and offered little going forward in the first-half due to limited supply. Should have scored when one-on-one with Tatarasanu on 57 minutes. No surprise he was replaced by Mertens with 15 minutes left.

Gonzalo Higuain (7)

Took his goal extremely well, converting Alonso’s poor clearance without a second thought. A constant threat to Rodriguez and Astori, giving them little peace in the first-half. Almost got the winner, but had a late effort correctly ruled out for offside. Cut a frustrated figure at times due to the lack of service, and extremely displeased to be substituted. Where would Napoli be without him?

SUBSTITUTES:

David Lopez (6.5) (replaced Allan on 62 minutes)

Lopez strived to drive Napoli forwarded when he came on, and provided some incisive passes.

Dries Mertens (6) (replaced Callejon on 77 minutes)

Mertens had little time to make an impact, but provided several good balls into the box from the right-side. Linked well with Hysaj when he came on.
