Napoli were defeated on aggregate 2-1 by Villarreal rather harshly on Thursday evening.
Reina (7): Did not have to make many saves throughout the match, with Villarreal only having 2 shots on target, however the Spaniard earned himself a 7 for his incredible leadership throughout the match. He kept the back-line fairly solid all match long even without star defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
Hysaj (7): The Albanian had a solid match tonight on the wing for Napoli. Offered a lot in attack and was solid on defense.
Albiol (6.5): Had a decent game overall. Completed pretty much every pass that was available and made a lot of big stops on defense.
Chiriches (6): Big Vlad, despite a few defensive mishaps in the first half, was fair this match. He did not do anything to0 great today however was solid nonetheless.
Strinic (6.5): Despite getting caught out a couple of times while going forward, he completed most of his passes and was a nuisance for the Villarreal right flank all match long.
David Lopez (6): The former Espanyol man was tactically well suited to Sarri’s 3 man midfield. Had a couple of chances to get on the scoresheet however failed on his two attempts.
Valdifiori (6): Made many dangerous long passes opening Villarreal’s defense a bit however besides that wasn’t that huge of a difference maker in Napoli’s midfield.
Hamsik (7): Had a very good night. Scored a wonderfully taken goal and he assisted many of his teammates into almost scoring the decisive goals in this match.
Insigne (5.5): Lorenzinho has had a rough couple of games for the partenopei. Hopefully he finds the right boots again as he hasn’t been the same Insigne we saw for most of the season.
Higuain (5): Was dangerous and had many chances to score, but costed his team with his missed chances. He must find his shooting boots again to have a hope of pushing Napoli to a 3rd scudetto victory in their history.
Mertens (7): Was Napoli’s most dangerous attacker today and created havoc in Villarreal’s defense. Unfortunately all of his brilliant work was done in vain today.
Subs
Jorginho (6): Was the typical Jorginho we’ve seen all season long. The most improved player in Sarri’s squad keeps putting in great performances, even from the bench.
Gabbiadini (6): Was decently dangerous in the 15 minutes he was put on the pitch for, but it feels as though Manolo should have been brought on earlier to give him more of a chance to put Napoli into the lead.
Maggio (6.5): Was very dangerous as an attacking wing-back, it’s unfortunate that his teammates couldn’t get on the end of any of his crosses.
