Following a 1-1 draw at home against Milan and squandering an opportunity to regain first place, Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri spoke with Premium Sport where he commented on his club’s creativity and their lack of luck.
On his team’s performance:
“We created enough, while conceding very little. They were able to advance 10 times into our box, but in the first half they were only able to do so three times, so to finish the first half at 1-1 weighed heavily from the psychological point of view. We are in a moment in which we lack the extra legs to resolve the matches, but there is little to complain about performance.”
On his expulsion from the match:
“My expulsion? I didn’t even understand the motive for it; it seems a bit too much, but let’s not mind it. You can’t allow a goalkeeper to take 50 seconds each time there is a goal kick. And I will not comment on other issues.”
Sarri commented on the offense’s plans and what’s missing in order to regain first place:
“We chose to let the wingers play a little closer to the inside so that Higuain was not isolated, pushing up further even with with our full-backs. It was a decision that was made specifically so that Higuain would not be alone up front. What’s missing in order to overtake Juventus? A bit of luck. In the match against Juventus? The same thing. Perhaps some players are at the same level of form as they were in respect to a few months ago, but we tried to win all the way to the end, even taking risks.”
“We don’t have many central midfielders that are suited to play a two-man midfield, so we will put in a lot of effort to fit players with different characteristics in that type of model. The numbers are still good. Some of our players are not performing as usual, but I think it’s normal for that to occur over the period of an entire season.”
