Buffon: “We Have A Great Responsibility, Football Drives The Nation.”

After Antonio Conte announced his final 23-man roster ahead of Euro 2016, Gianluigi Buffon spoke on live TV.

In a live show on RAI 1, Buffon spoke about his side’s job over the next month or so. He said,:

We have a great responsibility on our hands when representing our nation. Football drives the country forward. We’ve won four World Cups and are a historic team. Even if we aren’t going through the best of moments, these are the times where we emerge and surprise people.”

On going down to Serie B, Buffon said,:

“It was an occasion for me and for those who stayed to show with facts and not words how loyal we are.”

On the World Cup won in 2006, the legendary shot-stopper said,:

“I don’t have too many good memories from that night. The tension is so high that you don’t get to enjoy the beauty of the night. However, the pictures make me feel a lot of emotions. Nothing can eclipse a World Cup win.”

Buffon then touched upon his time with Parma,:

“When I played there, I felt like a superhero. Now I feel like a normal person. It’s important to have a balance and knowing your own limits and defects.”

The Italian keeper concluded the interview by talking about his debut with the Azzurri. He said,:

“If there was one game that I didn’t want to play in, it was that one given the conditions and the importance of it. I couldn’t wait for the game to finish. In that moment, I thought I could have gone a long way with just talent. However, that’s not the case. On the field, you need hunger. Luck helps at times but hunger and desire is a fundamental ingredient for success.”

Welcome to Camp Conte: 23 players selected for France

Antonio Conte has made his selections, which have caused turmoil and confusion among the Calcio world. However now he must create a full roster ready to do battle.

During his time as coach of Juventus, the players considered Conte one of the most demanding managers they had ever played for. He should have been a drill sergeant, he was that tough during the summer training camps. Carlos Tevez told reporters when he first joined Juventus in 2013 that he had never experienced a training camp like at Juventus under Conte.

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon, Salvatore Sirigu and Federico Marchetti.

Defenders: Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, Matteo Darmian, Mattia De Sciglio and Angelo Ogbonna.

Midfielders: Daniele De Rossi, Thiago Motta, Emanuele Giaccherini, Marco Parolo, Antonio Candreva, Federico Bernardeschi, Alessandro Florenzi, Stefano Sturaro and Stephan El Shaarawy.

Forwards: Graziano Pelle, Eder, Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile and Simone Zaza.

It’s not a glamorous squad list. It’s not a team filled with ‘without a doubt he should be there’ players. It’s a team that Conte knows he can get the best out of, whatever that may be. These players may not be the best as individuals, but for at least 270 minutes we know that there will be no shortage of effort from the eleven lions on the field.

Graziano Pelle and Eder have been the tandem most used under Conte’s command, the Lecce born forward has scored five goals in 12 appearances, while Eder has scored two goals in 10 appearances. Both of them have had their struggles at the club level, but they have played with each other quite a bit, and in the end that’s the reason why Conte has stuck with them.

In 2014, Italy had a team with better individuals, but the problem was then coach Cesare Prandelli couldn’t unlock the right combination on multiple areas on the pitch like he had in 2012. Antonio Conte on the other hand has had his core group of players ironed out for quite some time.

Of course there are shocking exclusions like Bonaventura, Jorginho, Pavoletti, Belotti and Giovinco. But in order for the Italians to do well in France, Conte will have to put 23 players on the same page and play as a team, not as individuals. Although we may not ever know the rationale behind each selection or exclusion, we have to (hope) know that Conte has made the best team possible.

Napoli Open Door For Immobile Homecoming

The Torino striker will not make his return permanent at the club and could continue his career in his hometown of Naples.

From an emotional return to a recent falling out with the club, Ciro Immobile might not be in a Granata jersey for much longer. However, one club is prepared to welcome the former capocannoniere back to his native region. As reported by Tuttosport, Napoli are ready to begin talks with Sevilla to sign the Torre Annunziata-born striker as Torino are unwilling to redeem him.

With a price set at 11 million for Immobile, Torino consider it a fee too high for their liking and after the latest comments from club President Urbano Cairo about his player’s attitude, it is almost certain that he will be sent back to Spain.

Mayoral Viewed As Possible Replacement For Morata At Juventus

Juventus could replicate the Morata deal with one of Madrid’s most coveted young strikers.

It is all but confirmed that Real Madrid will buy-back striker Alvaro Morata from the Bianconeri once the transfer window opens. The 30 million price tag will surely be reinvested into the market by Juventus and they might be ready to bring in another Real Madrid striker to replace the out-going Morata.

According to Tuttosport, Juventus could sign Real Madrid Castilla wonderkid Borja Mayoral with the same conditions that were attached to Morata when he was signed, meaning a buy-back close would again be inserted. The hot-shot striker lit up the Segunda B Division in Spain this season, scoring 15 goals in 29 appearances. He also had an impressive UEFA Youth League campaign, scoring eight goals in seven games for Real Madrid.

Porto Midfielder Nearing Napoli Switch

The Mexican midfielder has given his blessing for a move to the Partenopei.

According to Sportmediaset, Hector Herrera has come to an agreement with Napoli on a transfer once the window opens in July. The Mexican International must now wait for an agreement to be reached between his parent club Porto, and Napoli.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis presented an offer of 20 million for Herrera, 5 million less than the requested amount by Porto. However, the inclusion of bonuses to the offer could sway Porto into giving the green light on a transfer.

TS: Berardi says ‘YES’ to Juventus: The latest

Domenico Berardi is nearing a Zaza-esque switch to Juventus, which could end the two year long saga.

Tuttosport is the latest source to confirm the arrival of Domenico Berardi to Juventus. The Bianconeri will send €25 million to Sassuolo, a fee agreed upon a year ago when the Neroverdi bought out the Juventus half of the player. Co-ownership deals were abolished last summer.

Juventus and Sassuolo will continue their collaboration together with two players heading to the Emilia-Romagnia outfit. Pescara’s Gianluca Caprari and Lapadula will head to the Europa League bound side with the help of Juventus.
The 21 year old Italian scored seven goals in 29 matches for Sassuolo in their hunt for European play.

Inter to sell big trio this summer: The names

Inter’s mercato strategy seems to be set on selling as numerous factors begin to merge.

La Gazzetta dello Sport ran a story today discussing the transfer plans of Internazionale this summer, ‘everybody’s on the market and they all have a price’.

Individuals, the sacrificial players and the eventual plan to get Mancini the players he wants/needs to bring Inter back into the UEFA Champions League. They want to sell their players for top dollar and look to rebuild (again), with FFP restrictions put on the club, Thohir and co. must sell key components of last year’s Nerazzurri.

Marcelo Brozovic seems the first likely to go, the Croatia international has a contract until 2020 worth €1.2 million a season. Taking everything into account, his marketability included, Brozovic would fetch a very large transfer fee. Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are heavily interested and would make up a large portion of the war chest Thohir wants to assemble for other purchases. The suggested fee is €35 million for Brozovic.
Other players who seem destined to leave are Jeison Murillo and Felipe Melo, who earn modest salaries and could be sold for decent money, especially the Colombian international.
Miscellaneous players set to leave to fund this summer’s transfer session are Ranocchia, Dodo, Laxalt, Santon and Andreolli who will most likely be bought out by Sevilla for €2.5 million.

Pogba buys home in Barcelona, but Juventus not put on alarm

Paul Pogba has been written in tabloids for years over a possible exit, but nothing has come of the rumors.

He’s a star on and off the pitch. With great results in terms of trophies and accolades come great sponsorship offers. But the French superstar isn’t done there, he’s purchased a home in Barcelona, but only as an investment.
Proto Group Ltd, a company that over-watches the purchase and sales of property released a statement on the situation.
“The purchase of a villa in Barcelona isn’t in any way linked to football motivations, it’s only and exclusively a property investment. We make public this news because with the player being a public figure surely the news will show up on Spanish newspapers, giving way to eventual journalist speculations that we do not intend to aid”

Jorginho’s Agent: “not much of a chance for the call”

The agent of the Italo-Brazilian made it all but official the fact that his client will not partake in Euro 2016.

Numerous reports this morning in Italy have more than suggested the fact that Jorginho will not partake in this summer’s European Championship.

Joao Santo, his agent told Naples based Radio CRC “There isn’t much of a chance for Jorginho to be called to the Euros. We’ll take note of that and we’ll work for Napoli. I’ve heard from the young man and he’s calm because Conte has chosen to go with more experienced players in that role like De Rossi and Thiago Motta.

“World Cup 2018? Right now it’s important that the Champions League is before everything for Jorginho, that he’ll undertake with Napoli, then we’ll see. With the no-call for the Euro we close a cycle, then we’ll reopen it and if the next coach is Ventura, Jorginho could have much more space with the 4-3-3, but the guy knows well that it’s important to be capped by Italy and to even have played just two friendlies.

“I’ve always believed in Jorginho’s potential, making grudges doesn’t help anybody, this year he did his best and because of this the lad is calm. In life you always must look forward to the future.”

Italy take on Belgium at the Stade de Lyon on June 13th to open their Euro campaign.

Early Indications of Conte’s final 23: The List

Italy coach Antonio Conte will release his final 23 later in the evening today for the Euro 2016 finals.

Sky Sports published a projected 23 man list ahead of the official list that comes out around 8:45 PM local time in Italy.

Goalkeepers: Buffon, Marchetti, Sirigu

Defenders: Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Darmian, De Sciglio, Ogbonna

Midfielders: Bernardeschi, Candreva, De Rossi, El Shaarawy, Florenzi, Giaccherini, Sturaro, Thiago Motta, Parolo

Attackers: Eder, Immobile, Insigne, Pellé, Zaza

Reserve: Zappacosta, Rugani, Benassi

If this holds true, Jorginho and Bonaventura would be cut from the team which would definitely be a suspect move considering their respective form this season.

As of typical Italy coaches, before every tournament usually a few young players stay to train with the squad to gain valuable experience with the senior national team. Of that list, none of the players have made their senior debut.

Conte: “We’re dreaming but with our feet on the ground”

Antonio Conte spoke to RAI before announcing his official 23 man roster for the Euros

“The dream must always be part of our life, dreaming gives you that motivation to reach an objective that today perhaps may only be a dreamed. I think that no one should stop us from dreaming, otherwise we’d be dead.”

“We’re working well, we’re looking to create something good to amaze and make the Italian people proud. We haven’t won the Euro since 1968 and this makes us realize the great span of time of difficulty that we’ve endured in this competition. We’re looking to keep our feet on the ground, one little step at a time, looking to get passed the group stage and then we’ll see what the future has in store for us”.

Italy kick off their Euro 2016 adventure against Belgium on June 13th at the Stade de Lyon.

Morata’s Juve Days Over? “I want to win with Real”

Much has been made over Morata’s future, and it seems to be set in white.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, Morata made it be known of his love for Los Blancos after winning their 11th Champions League title. “My destiny is to play and to win with Real.”

“I’ve won everything you could win in Italy, twice. I reached the finale of the Champions League, I scored a goal [in it against Barcelona] and I’ve grown as a player and as a person. I believe I’m a different player than the one I was when I left Real Madrid. I was a boy, and I come back a man.”

Morata would like to see clarity in his future, rumors in the past have linked him with a quick sale from Real to a third party in order for the 11 time Champions League winners to turn a quick profit.

“I’d like to see it resolved all before June 13th, when Spain debuts in the Euros.”

His desire is clear now, he wants to go home. “This is what I want, it’s my destiny. But it’s also true that at Madrid there are really great players and I want to play and to feel important.”

Real Madrid hold a buy back clause rumored to be around €35-38 million. Juventus still want to keep the Spanish forward, but as Sporting Director Giuseppe Marotta has always stated, if a player wants to leave the Old Lady, they won’t hold him back.

Crotone Looking To Add More Young Talent For Next Season

Crotone want to be more than just tourists in Serie A next season and believe the signing of fresh, young talent will be key in their quest for survival.

Serie A will be a brand-new experience for the Calabrian club next season and despite moving up to the top flight, their transfer strategy will not be changing. According to Corriere dello Sport, the newly-promoted club is on the hunt for young talents across the league whom they can bring in on loan, without the burden of purchasing them outright, for the time being.

The Italian media outlet reports that Crotone have identified Roma’s 19-year old center-forward Umar Sadiq and Inter’s Romanian center-forward, 20-year old George Puscas (on loan at Bari) as transfer targets this summer. The club are also planning to speak to Roma about renewing the loan of Federico Ricci who heavily impressed them throughout the Serie B season.

Sadiq tore up the Primavera campaign for Roma, scoring 12 goals in 9 games, while also earning a call-up to the first team where he scored 2 goals in 6 appearances. Puscas made 16 appearances for Bari, scoring four and assisting once. He will also be remembered for his dramatic tying goal in Bari’s comeback against Novara in the Playoffs, despite the club later being eliminated in Extra-Time.

Urbano Cairo: ”Immobile’s Attitude Is Incomprehensible”

The Torino President is not amused with his striker’s behavior as the Italian bomber is not convinced about remaining with the club.

It was scripted as a dream return to Torino for Ciro Immobile. The Granata faithful waited impatiently at the Caselle Airport in Torino, chanting and singing the name of their former capocannoniere who helped propel the club into a remarkable Europa League spot in 2014. After two unsuccessful spells abroad with Borussia Dortmund, where he failed to settle in, and Sevilla, where his playing time was severely limited, he was gifted a ticket back to the club that allowed him to run rampant all across Italy with his infectious scoring touch. In his first game back against Frosinone, he continued where he left off, scoring and assists in Torino’s 4-2 victory that day. However, it seems the Italian striker has taken a U-turn in regards to his intentions of staying at the club. This recent behavior was not appreciated by the club’s President.

In a recent interview with La Stampa, Torino President Urbano Cairo was vocal about his striker’s change in attitude and it did not sit well with the man in charge:

I had a great desire to redeem him but now, I do not understand his attitude. It is not a question of a million more or less, I only know that Gianluca Petrachi (Torino Sporting Director) told me that Immobile is not convinced about staying here. So at this time, Immobile has behaved himself in an incomprehensible way. If he really does not have the enthusiasm to stay here, then I will not even think of redeeming him.

Kucka Tops Mihajlovic’s Wishlist At Torino

According to Tuttosport, Slovenian midfielder Juraj Kucka is one of Mihajlovic’s top transfer objectives during the summer window. The new Torino bench boss considers the 29-year old as one who embodies what it means to represent a club and would fit into his tactical plans for the upcoming season. To make room for his arrival, Mihajlovic is ready to make defensive midfielder Alessandro Gazzi expendable.

Kucka made 30 appearances for Milan this season, notching a goal and three assists.

Fiorentina Propose Substantial Offer To Santos For Gabriel Barbosa

The Brazilian prodigy is ready to move on from Santos and Fiorentina is prepared to offer him his dream transfer to Europe.

Living up to his adopted nickname Gabigol, Gabriel Barbosa has lit up the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and recently came off a scoring debut in his first International cap with Brazil. With his sights set on taking over Europe in the near future, one Serie A club is ready to accept him with arms wide open. According to ESPN via La Gazzetta dello Sport, Fiorentina have sent his parent club Santos an offer 30 million but a deal could be more difficult for La Viola due to the player’s desire to play at a top club.

It is reported that the 19-year old favors a move away from Santos but only to a club the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. Fiorentina could find it very tough to convince the Brazilian otherwise although the prospect of regularly playing time will likely be higher at the Serie A club than at one of the aforementioned three. Borussia Dortmund are also rumored to be interested in Gabriel but no official offer has been presented to Santos.

El Shaarawy To Become A Permanent Player At Roma

Eight goals and two assists in 16 Serie A appearances was enough for Roma to hit the ‘buy’ button on his permanency at the club.

As per TuttoMercatoWeb, Roma have until June 22nd to purchase the Italian-Egyptian winger out-right from Milan. Sporting Director Walter Sabatini will hand over 13 million to the Rossoneri for El Shaarawy, for which the latter will reinvest into the summer market.

The 23-year old went through a rough patch over the course of the last year, being sent on loan to Monaco after struggling to recover from injuries at Milan. His playing time did not improve with the Ligue 1 competitors as they avoided playing him in the minimum number of games to trigger the automatic purchase clause added to the loan deal. A new loan at Roma acted as a blessing in disguise for the younger winger where he became a vital piece to Spalletti’s attack.

Three Key Transfer Headlines this AM

IFD breaks down the top 3 transfer rumors from this morning May 30th, 2016.

Radja Nainggolan is a wanted man, but he wants to stay at Roma. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport the Belgium midfielder has decided to turn down both Chelsea and Manchester United as he wants to stay in Serie A.
Napoli had been gunning for Davy Klaassen of Ajax, however it seems the Partenopei have missed out on their objective. According to Sky Sport, the Ajax talent had met with Napoli’s DS Cristiano Giuntoli to affirm his desire to stay in the Netherlands for one more year. The parties left in a very high regard of each other, so the door isn’t permanently closed. However, the Azzurri still need another man in the midfield and they are now turning to Empoli’s Piotr Zielinski.
It’s at the final stages of negotiations now for Dani Alves to Juventus, according to Leggo. The Bianconeri are ready to offer a 2-year deal worth €5 million with an option for a third. Juve are also looking to define the details to bring in Domenico Berardi. This may include wrapping up the Gianluca Caprari deal in order to send him to Sassuolo or Empoli. Meanwhile, the idea of bringing Javier Mascherano also from Barcelona is becoming more and more a fantasy. Barcelona want €25 million for the Argentine’s services.

A Serie A Perspective on the CIES’ Most Recent Performance Rankingd

The CIES’s most recent technical analysis of player performance in Europe’s Top-5 Leagues presents their attempts to provide an objective measure of player performance.

At first glance, there are facts listed here that some as no great surprise; for example, that Arturo Vidal is ranked the best-performing defensive midfielder of the top-5 leagues, or that Thiago Silva is a top class centre-back. Dig a bit deeper, and there are a few shocks – such as Ignazio Abate being one of the best-performing full-backs in Europe, or that Dybala is adjudged to be performing better than Cristiano Ronaldo.
This may suggest there are tweaks to be made in their model, but the ‘absolute’ rankings as listed above are only half of the story. The CIES also produce ‘relative’ rankings for players, which are the best performers in the top-5 teams relative to their own team-mates. These are a lot more thought-provoking; after all, as the report itself states:
‘This type of analysis is particularly useful in unveiling the potential of footballers who do not yet play for the most competitive clubs. It also allows us to measure the clubs’ dependency on their key players.’
Before we take a look at the relative rankings for those players based in Italy, it would help to have a quick overview of their methodology – as it helps set out which competencies are most important. Performance is analysed on the basis of 6 key performance indicators, as listed in their graphic below:
 Inline image 1
Firstly, they examine the rankings by competency, each list comprising the top 10 players from Europe’s top-5 leagues:
RIGOUR – In a list populated by Full-and Centre-Backs,  Fiorentina’s Facundo Roncaglia makes second place for his part in earning la Viola their 5th place finish. Genoa’s Sebastian De Maio makes 8th position, despite (or given the nature of how relative rankings work, due to) Genoa’s slide from 6th in 2014/15 to 11th this season. Although different in stature and style, both defenders are 29, so are more likely to settle into senior roles into their respective sides.
RECOVERY – The 10 players are divided up into 7 Defensive Midfielders, 2 Box-to-Box Midfielders and 1 Centre-Back. The combination of positional awareness and tactical intelligence required to satisfy this indicator are the hallmark of a mature midfielder. Riccardo Montolivo ranks 3rd overall – the best in Serie A. In the light of Conte’s preliminary selection for the Euros, the following conclusion drawn by CIES is particularly interesting:
‘Our analysis also suggests that Riccardo Montolivo is the best candidate to supplant Claudio Marchisio, injured, for the next European championships’
Of course, Marchisio features – even in a side as successful as Juventus this year, his performances stood out. Napoli’s Jorginho, for Napoli’s dependence on him in a stellar season makes the list too.
I mentioned there was a centre-back in the list: Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli.
 Inline image 2
As put best by Adam Digby of FourFourTwo (link), Koulibaly’s first season in Italy would give no indication of what a talent he would grow to become:
‘The Senegalese giant looked awkward and ungainly, was often caught out of position and appeared to lack either the tactical discipline or concentration necessary to succeed in Serie A’
So what business does he have in this list? He’s improved massively under Maurizio Sarri’s reign. Leave it to Adam to explain further:
‘…perhaps his biggest improvement has been in terms of positioning – he’s now seemingly always in the right place to steal the ball away from an opponent’
A centre-back blessed not only with great height and physical presence, but also an excellent reading of the game is rare in the modern game. Napoli daren’t sell such an important asset to their side’s spine if they wish to challenge for honours again next season.
There’s one more surprise here – Mirko Gori of Frosinone creeps in at number 10 in the list. Relegation favourites from before the season even started, Frosinone’s highlights included scalping Sampdoria and holding Juventus to a draw – with Gori playing a key role in midfield. For a player of just 23, the potential is evident for him to play at a higher level.
DISTRIBUTION – a category populated by DMs and BMs – the representatives include another appearance by Jorginho (according to FICG the top passer in the entire league – link). Lucas Biglia features, too, for his work in Lazio’s midfield. With all mercato attention on Lazio this summer likely to be centred on Felipe Anderson, expect Biglia to be sought-after, too.
 Inline image 3
TAKE-ONS – a trait important to forwards and attacking midfielders – unsurprisingly Franco Vazquez tops the list for his role in dragging Palermo to Serie A survival this term. His achievements are made ever more significant in part of the report’s concluding statements, on what factors to consider when looking at relative performance:

‘Moreover, individual performance is influenced by the general configuration of teams. It is, for example, much easier for a player to be competitive in a stable environment with a clear strategy than in an unstable one characterised by frequent changes of the coach’
We all know there’s not many clubs as unstable as Palermo under Zamparini! Atalanta’s Alejandro Gomez is also prominent. More of a winger than Vazquez; his 7 goals, 7 assists and 5 man-of-the-match performances give him a Whoscored.com rating of 7.36 – 9th in the site’s ranking of Italy’s top players. At the age of 28, it may be that Atalanta choose to cash in on their asset this summer to a side seeking attacking reinforcements.
CHANCE CREATION – only one player from Serie A features here – Empoli’s Riccardo Saponara. Unlucky not to be featured in Conte’s most recent selection, the playmaker has been reborn since returning to Empoli after a failed experiment at Milan. The top Italian assist-maker this term, only 1 behind leaders Pjanic and Pogba. Still only 24, the attacking midfielder occupies both ends of the relative performance scale – in the sense that he is both depended upon by his team as a key player, and also has the potential to play at a high level.
SHOOTING – Gonzalo Higuain is the only representative from Serie A in the list after breaking Gunnar Nordahl’s record this season. Remember, though, that this is not an absolute but a relative list – so for all his record-breaking feats, HIguain has also been dramatically outperforming his team-mates. A quick look at Napoli’s page on WhoScored.com confirms as much – Higuain has an average Shots Per Game score of 5.2, a full 1.6 SpG clear of Insigne, and leaving Hamsik (2.2) miles behind. Just to put into perspective, HIguain and Insigne occupy the top two slots in SpG for the entire league, too.
 Inline image 4
In this piece we’ve seen which players stand out when considering individual key performance indicators. To go a level further, the CIES package these KPIs up to show what are most important for different positions on the pitch. In the next article on this topic, we’ll look at which players make the top places when the rankings are organised by position.

Lazio working on Pavoletti deal, player wants Milan

Leonardo Pavoletti is on many clubs wishlists as the summer transfer window nears.

The 27 year old Genoa striker had a breakout season, scoring 14 goals in 25 matches. Had injury not kept him out for a large portion of the second half of the season, he may have well reached the 20 goal mark.
With his great performance for Genoa, Lazio have taken notice and club president Claudio Lotito has begun to make moves to bring him to the capital city.
Lotito met with Genoa’s president Enrico Preziosi for dinner to discuss the transfer, according to Sky Sport. The Grifone value the forward at around €13 million and won’t go any lower than that.
However according to Lazio based sources, Pavoletti is waiting for the situation at AC Milan to develop so he can see if he has a chance to break into the lineup. With that being said, Pavoletti hasn’t refused a move to Lazio, but is rather just waiting on Milan to make a move.

Dani Alves inches towards Juventus: The Latest

“Dani Alves alla Juve” the recurring phrase in newspapers in Italy.

This will be the decisive week for the possible acquisition of Dani Alves by Juventus. By the end of the week, we’ll understand whether or not the Brazilian will be wearing black and white in 2016/17.
According to Sky Sport, come June 5th Dani Alves will have to announce his definitive decision to Barcelona. In his contract, he has the right to decide if he wants to walk away a year early. The player has reportedly chosen Juventus, most likely because they put a very important offer on the table until 2019, where the Brazilian would be a Juve player until he’s 36 years of age.

Conte: “De Rossi is good enough, but in pain”

Antonio Conte spoke to Rai Sport before this evening’s clash with Scotland in Malta.

“De Rossi is good enough, even if he has pain in his Achilles’ tendon and is a bit exacerbated. Now, however, I need to test him, to see how he reacts to the pressures of a game. Eder? In the entire league he scored 13 goals and is the top scorer of the 30 Azzurri I have today available to me. And then, the stats only say what you see, it doesn’t interest me. I haven’t yet decided if I will bring 4 or 5 strikers to France.”
Seven players still must be cut before the final 23 is nailed down for the trip to France.

Tavecchio: “The new Azzurri coach will be announced June 7th”

Antonio Conte’s replacement will be announced before Italy take the field in the European Championship

FIGC (Italian FA) president Carlo Tavecchio spoke in Malta ahead of the clash with Scotland in a pre-Euro tune up match.

“I’m convinced that we have a team, it’s cohesive and they will do well. We’ll see the results. What do I hope for in the Euro? Italy cannot go into it with modest ambitions, we’re amongst the top 4-5 in Calcio. We’ll always play to get the result.

When will you announce Ventura? “The date of the announcement is June 7th, but I don’t know if it will be Ventura. It’ll be who it’ll be (he laughs).

Giovinco: “The Nazionale isn’t a closed chapter for me”

Giovinco addressed the media after his side’s loss to the New York Red Bulls regarding his future with the Italian national team.

Antonio Conte raised hell by excluding Sebastian Giovinco this past week which resulted in a whirlwind of condemnation on the Italy coach. The MLS MVP simply ‘knew the risks of playing in a lesser league’ and thus was not called to the Azzurri.
IFD had the opportunity to speak with the Atomic Ant several times in the 2016 season, and the question regarding whether Conte had called him always had the same reply, “he hasn’t called”.
“Now I have to rightfully look ahead and that says I will play in Toronto and we push forward. Did I expect to be selected for this Euro? I can say that in this last period I wasn’t very confident, but I focused on continuing to work and I will do more so that I can return to the national team as quickly as possible. Did I hear from Conte? No, I didn’t hear from him. I knew it was a risk to come here, but I woukd make the same choice, continuing this way. For me the national team isn’t a closed chapter”

Conte can’t take on Europe with skill, so how can he?

Italy’s roster is anything but impressive in comparison to recent years, so how can Antonio Conte avoid a humiliating show in France in a few weeks time?

The very fact that I had to write ‘in comparison to recent years’ in the opener, goes to show how much of a crisis the Italian national team is in. Several of the players on the roster do not have extensive European or international experience, and a handful of them will have less than 5 caps to their name come tournament time. It’s 2010 all over again, the Azzurri aren’t exactly a young team, and they are inexperienced.

The exclusion of Andrea Pirlo and Sebastian Giovinco really hurt the Azzurri in a two edged blow in terms of experience and current form. Other hand handed options such as Andrea Belotti and Leonardo Pavoletti were overlooked, but again that duo falls into the category of shear inexperience. So what do we have on the table, then?

Goalkeepers:
• 1 – Gianluigi Buffon
• 14 – Federico Marchetti
• 12 – Salvatore Sirigu

Defenders:
• 5 – Davide Astori
• 15 – Andrea Barzagli
• 19 – Leonardo Bonucci
• 3 – Giorgio Chiellini
• 4 – Matteo Darmian
• 2 – Mattia De Sciglio
• 21 – Angelo Ogbonna
• 25 – Daniele Rugani*
• 26 – Davide Zappacosta*
Midfielders:
• 13 – Marco Benassi*
• 29 – Federico Bernardeschi*
• 28 – Giacomo Bonaventura*
• 6 – Antonio Candreva
• 16 – Daniele De Rossi
• 24 – Alessandro Florenzi
• 23 – Emanuele Giaccherini
• 8 – Jorginho*
• 30 – Riccardo Montolivo
• 32 – Thiago Motta
• 18 – Marco Parolo
• 27 – Stefano Sturaro*

Attackers:
• 17 – Eder
• 22 – Stephan El Shaarawy
• 11 – Ciro Immobile
• 20 – Lorenzo Insigne
• 9 – Graziano Pelle
• 7 – Simone Zaza

* Indicates players with less than 5 international caps.

Antonio Conte had the luxury of coming into Juventus in 2011 at rock bottom with a few great additions. The second awakening of Andrea Pirlo and new boys Arturo Vidal, Stephan Lichtsteiner really boosted the Old Lady back up to the top where they have remained for the last 5 years. But what cannot be taken away from Conte is how he managed to mould a unit together. He got all the pieces put together and created a very cohesive and effective team. His selections were/are anything but devoid of controversy, but he’s stuck with guys who got him through qualification and he hasn’t wanted to make many changes to that core.

If Italy cannot beat you with skill, they are going to have to try to beat you with a never give up mentality, a strong team attitude and top physical condition. Whether those three keys can be achieved is anyone’s guess, but it’s all the Azzurri have got heading into a tough group against Belgium, Sweden and Ireland.

Fiorentina To Take Advantage Of Bartra’s Drop In Release Clause

Fiorentina could pull off a incredible bargain of a deal after the Barcelona defender’s release clause lowers in price.

As reported by Spanish news outlet Sport, Marc Bartra saw his release clause plummet to €8 million from the original fee of €40 million due to not playing the required minimum number of games at Barcelona this season. The Spanish center-back found it very difficult to obtain playing time in Luis Enrique’s Starting XI and was faced with the same situation as last season. He had the opportunity to test the waters of the summer market last year but opted to stay and fight for his place.

Bartra only managed 13 appearances, scoring two goals and notching one assist.

How Italy Can Cope with Euro 2016 Pressure

For years Italy has seen themselves be a contender at every major tournament. Euro 2016, although bookmakers and fans give them a chance, things are a little different.

Although they have some experienced players, it’s very much a new-look team, with a team-first emphasis. Usually the Italians were built on a stable back-four, with world-class creative, attacking players to make magic happen in the attacking end of the field. Things will change for Antonio Conte’s men this summer. He has released a 30-man squad, and one he’ll soon thin down, however, the announcement has already got many wondering how they’ll cope with the pressure, and how they’ll fair at this summer’s European championship.

Take a look at their training-camp squad:

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Federico Marchetti (Lazio), Salvatore Sirigu (Paris Saint Germain);
Defenders: Davide Astori (Fiorentina), Andrea Barzagli (Juventus), Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Angelo Obinze Ogbonna (West Ham), Daniele Rugani (Juventus);
Wingers: Federico Bernardeschi (Fiorentina), Antonio Candreva (Lazio), Matteo Darmian (Manchester United), Mattia De Sciglio (Milan), Stephan El Shaarawy (Roma), Davide Zappacosta (Torino);
Midfielders: Marco Benassi (Torino),  Giacomo Bonaventura (Milan), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Alessandro Florenzi (Roma), Emanuele Giaccherini (Bologna), Jorge Luiz Jorginho (Napoli), Riccardo Montolivo (Milan), Thiago Motta (Paris Saint Germain), Marco Parolo (Lazio), Stefano Sturaro (Juventus);
Forwards: Citadin Martins Eder (Inter), Ciro Immobile (Torino), Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli), Graziano Pellè (Southampton), Simone Zaza (Juventus).
Auxiliary goalkeeper: Alex Meret (Udinese)

In the training squad, players like Daniele De Rossi, Ciro Immobile and Graziano Pelle will be crucial. They bring a balance of youth and experience that the squad will need. There are plenty of player changes, and Coral are leading the field again with this article. Showing that there will be plenty of Italian changes this summer.

However, there’s no doubt that Buffon, Bonucci, Barzagli and Chiellini will be instant starters, and players that the Italians will build the backbone of their squad around. Goalkeeper Buffon, who is playing his last European Championship, recently alluded to the fact that the recent terror attacks in France, the threat of more, all mixed with player-selection choices, have left the squad feeling pressured, but he insists they can cope.

He explained “It’s certainly scary, and it’s right to be cautious, But we’re important social instruments and we can give people dreams. If you want to do that, unfortunately at this moment in history you have to run a few risks. I’m happy to do that if I can give happiness to those who follow football.”

He concluded that the squad selection decisions will not impact those that go. He explained he was misquoted recently about unrest about not taking Francessco Tottie, saying, “People have interpreted certain words I told a child who asked me about his captain. I can confirm that a player with his quality, a phenomenon, won’t be seen very often. That’s a far cry from saying he’ll be called up though. Max Allegri and Antonio Conte? Allegri surprised me for how he changed this year, including his impact in the changing room starting from November.”

Things have certainly changed, but all things must change eventually, and that doesn’t mean the Italians won’t be a force at the Euro’s. Although they lack the star power they once had, and although there’s pressure in almost every direction they face, they’ll unite as one, regardless, when their squad is trimmed down.

Whoever goes, the Italians will have a blend of youth and experience, and will be a more all-around team than they’ve been in previous tournaments. Although they’re not the favourites by any mean to win Euro 2016, you certainly shouldn’t bet against them thriving on the pressure and succeeding.

Juventus Ponder Loan Move For Kovacic

Juventus could offer the Croatian midfielder a move back to Serie A following his inability to break into Madrid’s Starting XI on a consistent basis.

According to Premium Sport, Juventus may be lining up a loan offer to Real Madrid for Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic. The Bianconeri want to take advantage of Kovacic’s struggles at finding space within Zidane’s Starting XI by preparing a loan deal with an option to buy, for next season. Fabio Paritici will be present in Milan on Saturday for the Champions League Final and could use it as an opportunity to speak with Madrid about the Croatian’s availability.

The 22 year old former Dinamo Zagreb and Inter midfielder made 25 appearances for Madrid this season, collecting only two assists.

Esteban Cambiasso: ”I Want To See Inter In The Champions League”

The ex-Inter midfielder dreams about seeing his former club return to the grandest stage of them.

While in Milan for Saturday’s Champions League Final, current Olympiacos midfielder Esteban Cambiasso spoke to TuttoMercatoWeb about his desire to see Inter, whom he spent a decade with and where won a Champions League medal, return to the prestigious European cup competition:

It is a joy returning to Italy and to the San Siro. I hope that it will be a good game tomorrow. I still keep in touch with my former Inter teammates. I hope to see Inter return to the group stage and then slowly, make it to the rounds that count. For a city like Milan that breathes football, it is a shame that neither Milan nor Inter are in Europe’s biggest club competition.

Edgar Davids: ”Juventus Must Spend To Win The Champions League”

The ex-Juventus midfielder says his former club will need to spend on the transfer market if they are to raise the Champions League trophy in the future.

Speaking to Premium Sport in a recent interview, former Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids believes the Bianconeri will have to open their wallet if they are to succeed at winning Europe’s biggest club competition:

Juventus have to invest if they want to win the Champions League. English clubs spent a lot and I believe that Juventus, even if things are going well, will have to make purchases to obtain other successes. When you continuously win in your country, you always want more.

The Pitbull then gave his thoughts on the upcoming Champions League Final in Milan:

I think that Italy is the right stage to play a game of this nature. Both squads have prepared differently. Both will want to win and it will nice to see the desire to win from both sides. I have not spoken to Zidane, I let him work in peace.

Giovinco and Pirlo’s Omission From Conte’s Azzurri: The Facts, Stats and Logic Ignored

Earlier this week, Azzurri boss Antonio Conte released his 30-man provisional squad, with a handful of controversy lumped in with it. New York City FC’s Andrea Pirlo and Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco were both left off, causing quite the stir amongst not just Italy supporters, but viewers of Major League Soccer.

As if his first squad reveal last week wasn’t enough, Italy manager Antonio Conte’s latest roster ahead of next months’ quickly approaching European Championship in France has pushed the envelope even further.

Last week, Conte revealed a squad that was to take part in a three-day trial at the national side’s training ground, Coverciano in Florence. With a plethora of Cup finals on tap last weekend, players from Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, A.C. Milan and Juventus were left off as they continued training with their respective clubs. Essentially, any player who was still involved in competitive matches for their club was excluded from being called up to La Nazionale. So, the Juventus-rich Italy side we are accustomed to seeing; no Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, and Gianluigi Buffon. But this also meant that Major League Soccer’s Andrea Pirlo and Sebastian Giovinco were also excluded as their season only just kicked off in March. This squad was taken with a grain of salt, but the pot was beginning to stir.

On this initial roster reveal by Conte last week, there were many names left off that should have been called over several that were summoned. Fabio Borini (Sunderland) was perhaps the most confusing of players to see under attaccanti, and for many reasons. The former Roma man has been highly underwhelming for the Premier League side these past two seasons and last appeared for his national team four years ago under Cesare Prandelli. Borini was picked over Torino’s young striker Andrea Belotti who scored the most goals among all Italians across Europe in the calendar year. Palermo’s Franco Vazquez and Empoli’s Riccardo Saponara were also left off in favor of Conte’s personal favorite from his Juventus regime, Emanuele Giaccherini. It’s quite obvious from these decisions that Conte is basing many of his selections on who can fit his tactics in a short tournament against the best of Europe, not strictly on performance. (Don’t worry, I’m slowly making my way to the argument here; I promise.)

So after the Cup finals concluded, now we would begin to see the cards fall into place. On Monday, Conte revealed his latest 30-man squad that will eventually shrink to 23 once rosters are to be finalized by the end of the month:

Goalkeeping wise, there is little worth arguing about. Buffon is clear-cut the number one, followed by Salvatore Sirigu who had spent most of his time this season for Laurent Blanc’s Paris Saint-Germain backing up Kevin Trapp. Lazio’s Federico Marchetti managed to receive the third and final spot over Atalanta’s Marco Sportiello and Milan’s standout youngster Gianluigi Donnarumma. Regardless, you will be hard pressed to find Azzurri supporters pillaging over the third keeper. Same with the defense, most of the usual suspects are in tact and well deserving; Chiellini, Barzagli, Bonucci. Davide Astori (Fiorentina), Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham) and Daniele Rugani (Juventus) were also called over the arguably more deserving Alessio Romagnoli (Milan). Regardless, it’s understood that Conte favors the 3-5-2 and will start the bianconeri trio of Chiellini, Barzagli and Bonucci come June 13th against Belgium. Next, we dive into the midfield which is where the discussion heats up.

Last month, Juventus talisman Claudio Marchisio was ruled out for the Euro after tearing knee ligaments in a 4-0 rout of Palermo. As if things couldn’t get much worse for Italy, the fact is they did. PSG’s star midfield maestro Marco Verratti underwent surgery to repair an ongoing groin problem. Just like that, Italy’s two most vital components in the midfield were eliminated from the Euro. While the injuries to Marchisio and Verratti closed doors for the sides’s two most impactful midfielders, another opened for Andrea Pirlo to reclaim his rightful throne for the Euro; his last “hurrah”.

Pirlo was at the heart of Italy’s glorious 2006 World Cup win under Marcello Lippi as the squad’s deep-lying regista. However, since the disappointing World Cup 2014 display by an Italy that failed to escape the group stage, questions lingered as to whether it was time for Pirlo to step aside and allow the national team to find his heir to lead the new Italian revolution. Pirlo seemed all but certain to hang it up for country, but Conte’s appointment after the World Cup altered his decision.

Fast forward to 2015. Juventus lost Pirlo as he crossed the Atlantic to join up with expansion club New York City FC. With this move, it seemed as if Pirlo could be the one to debunk the public perception many football fans have of North America’s professional league as a “retirement league.” Yet, that view of Major League Soccer may not be changing anytime soon as Pirlo was left off the roster by a man he shares mutual respect with in Antonio Conte. Pirlo of course was a key cog in Conte’s Juventus reign in which they won three consecutive Scudetti and it seemed that he wouldn’t dare leave the ex-Milan midfielder off, especially with the injuries to Verratti and Marchisio. However, it’s now clear that his move to the Big Apple has greatly effected his status with the national team.

Conte, who last played Pirlo for Italy in a Euro qualifying win v Malta last September, did not hold back much at a press conference earlier this week saying:

“When you make a certain choice and go to play in certain leagues, you do so taking it into account that they could pay the consequences from a footballing viewpoint. I called him and we’ve spoken about it. I needed to discuss it with him and we’ve had people out there for a week to take a look at him and Giovinco. We’ve made technical choices and nothing has been done just at random.”

Pirlo also pinpointed at the differences between European football and the brand played in the United States. If you read what the Italian said about the two leagues in terms of style of play, you get the impression that he understands why he may have been at a disadvantage at the time of the call-ups. Personally, I’d have no issues with Pirlo being selected over Giaccherini or Marco Parolo (Lazio), however Giaccherini is a versatile, hardworking midfielder who can do a few things; a Conte favorite. Parolo is a box to box midfielder who can score you a few goals while also being a serviceable, and smart, ball distributor. Andrea Pirlo also just turned 37 and Conte is feeling the brunt of the heat for not thrusting the new crop of younger guys to succeed the old guard.

As for the “Atomic Ant” plying his trade in “The 6,” this is where the article flips over on it’s head. (Yes, I’ve finally arrived to my main arguments.) Sebastian Giovinco (Toronto FC) has been as dominant an import Major League Soccer has seen in it’s 20-plus years of existence. Giovinco, who moved from Juventus last year, has taken the league by storm, turning defensive units inside-out and pulling off highlight-reel moves. Make no mistake, the former Parma man is lethal; 30 goals in 45 appearances since his move to Toronto. Yet how well does that translate over with the performances of some of the men selected over him, as well as those who were also snubbed despite impressing in Italy? Well, let’s dive in, starting with an image of the top Italian goal scorers in Europe during the 2015/16 season, courtesy of Opta Paolo:

image

Leonardo Pavoletti (Genoa) had a stellar season for the rossoblu this year, scoring 14 goals despite missing thirteen league matches due to injuries. At one point, he was arguably the most in-form Italian target man in Europe before Torino’s Andrea Belotti (also left off the squad) finished the season with the most goals (11) among qualifiers in 2016. Pavoletti did get the nod from Conte last week for the trials in Coverciano but was left off Monday’s squad in rather questionable fashion. Now a few things to look at here. How could Conte leave both Pavoletti and Belotti, his two most in-form strikers, at home? Èder who had been a mainstay for the Azzurri throughout the qualification phase, has only scored once since his move to Inter from Sampdoria in January where he was a top scorer in Serie A at the winter break. Fact is, Conte has tried the Brazil-Italo up front and on the wing during Italy’s journey to qualifying so he has an understanding of his abilities to play with Graziano Pellè (Southampton). This is one instance of Conte showing the world that he wants players who fit his scheme, regardless of their recent form. See Major League Soccer pundits and journalists, Conte does not have a witch-hunt against players in North America. He left off two of the top performing Italian strikers, even having been able to observe them in the comforts of Italy, week in and week out. Moving on.

Sebastian Giovinco’s gaudy goal and assists output are no joke; he’s carried the entire Toronto FC club on his small, tattoo covered back and has done it fairly easily. But, while Giovinco’s numbers indicate he is an easy choice for the Azzurri roster, how well do his numbers in a heavily offensive-driven league stack up against those in Italy where defending is an art form? Think about this analogy. When comparing the talent level between Japanese baseball and Major League Baseball, the stats from one league don’t always carry over. In Japan, the style of pitching, playing culture and overall talent level is not in the same (pun incoming) ballpark as that of MLB. Major League Baseball is a league full of the best of the best, a league thousands of hopeful pros flee treacherous living conditions to play in. Goals and assists are the main statistical values for which we measure performance for an attacking player, so for this comparison we will use the equivalent in baseball for a batter.

A batter hitting .350, 30 home-runs and 100 rbi in Japan and taking advantage of soft-tossing pitchers may come to North America and hit, say .260, 15 homers and drive in 75 rbi. Follow me here. The fact is, the Japanese Baseball League (in this case, MLS) doesn’t fully correlate performance trends to Major League Baseball (Europe). You have to understand the potentially skewed performances and make reasonable projections that could apply to the better competition. Below is a good example of stat comparisons from Serie A to MLS for Sebastian Giovinco’s that I found fascinating, courtesy of Italian Football Daily’s Senior Editor Gregory Caltabanis:

Mind you, Conte and Giovinco were together during these two campaigns, and it’s obvious that his numbers (to my above point) do not stack up with those in Toronto. To my last point we go.

Despite the career year in 2015-16, Napoli’s technical winger Lorenzo Insigne is still not a guarantee to make the squad, even though his numbers suggest he should perhaps start. The former Pescara standout put it all together under Maurizio Sarri this past season, helping the partenopei emerge as a legitimate contender for the Scudetto. We saw his entire skillset on display. He’s an impactful, dynamic attacking force that has done the leg work to make Conte’s final squad. However, due to the fact that Conte is projected to play a 3-5-2, things seem to be foggy for the 24-year Italian wing-man. Insigne does not possess the qualities to play as a right or left wingback in this system. Defensively, he doesn’t cut it and it’s difficult to force him into a role without having deployed him in it. Now, if a player of Insigne’s caliber does not make the squad, can we really bring Giovinco? Think about it. In the 30-man squad, you have the following players who are candidates to play in a 3-5-2 setup as wingbacks: Stephan El Shaarawy, Alessandro Florenzi, Federico Bernardeschi, Antonio Candreva, Matteo Darmian, Mattia De Sciglio and Davide Zappacosta. It’s unclear as to whether Conte will play natural wingers in these two roles, or lean to fullbacks with speed who can plunge forward while also covering their defensive duties. In a 3-5-2, Giovinco simply does not have the qualities to play as a wingback. He’s a wide player who can also be deployed as either a seconda punta, or trequartista. In my opinion, you can’t have both Giovinco and Insigne, and let’s be honest. It would be madness for Conte to not choose the latter.

Again, these are arguments that some may not even consider. Critics of Giovinco’s omission will remain fixated on the fact that his numbers are, on paper, much better than any player called over him. Yet, I think some initially ignored some of these obvious details that could’ve brought this discussion to a calmer verdict. Antonio Conte coached both Andrea Pirlo and Sebastian Giovinco, so he understands them better than any of us. Bottom line is both players understood the risk of moving out of Italy to play in a less-competitive league a year before a major tournament. Ultimately, had either one of them went out on loan this past January to showcase themselves to Conte that they still can produce against elite footballers and at a high level, they could have likely made the cut. However, both are not going to France, and that is something we all have to accept. Antonio Conte, whether you disagree with his selections or not, does have a better idea of who can make his scheme run effectively; and we should respect that. After all, he’s an excellent motivator and is capable of making magic happen. Jump on board.

PSG Balk At Price Tag For Icardi

PSG seek new alternatives post-Ibrahimovic after Inter set high price tag for their Argentinian striker.

Losing a striker the likes of Ibrahimovic can be very difficult to replace, especially taking into consideration the impact he has had on the club and fanbase. PSG’s new priority is to find the new superstar striker who can continue the legacy Zlatan left behind and one player who tops the list is a former Serie A capocannoniere.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Ligue 1 champions have concrete interest in Inter striker Mauro Icardi. The sole problem they face is the release fee of 50 million set by the Nerazzurri. PSG President Al Khelaifi reportedly considers the price way too high and has begun to seek alternative options which are said to be Higuain, Morata and Lacazette.

Juventus Refuse To Let Go Of Zaza Despite Numerous Offers

Up to four players could be heading towards the exit at Juventus but Simone Zaza will likely not be one of them.

For the Bianconeri to advance themselves on the summer transfer market, a number of players will be have to sold to make room and increase funds. As per Tuttosport, Hernanes, Asamoah, Pereyra and possibly Neto could all be wearing a different jersey come next season. One name that is creating the most buzz on the transfer market is striker Simone Zaza but Juventus have put up a wall despite a number of calls and offers from clubs around Europe.

It is being reported that Roma are insisting for Juventus to loosen their grip, which if they were to sell, would likely not be to a direct competitor. Both West Ham and Sunderland have made their case known for his services while La Liga club Valencia have also thrown their name into the hat for the Italian international.

Roma Have Eyes On River Plate Winger

Another River Plate youth product could be making his way to Italy in the near future.

River Plate’s academy has produced a wealth of talented footballers from the likes of Omar Sivori and Hernan Crespo to Javier Saviola and Pablo Aimar. Over the last years, we witnessed the rise of other youth standouts such as Mattias Kravevitter and Lucas Ocampos, who made the move to the European stage. A new name however has already been carving a reputation in his homeland and with a Copa Sudamericana title and Copa Libertadores title under his belt at the tender age of 20, it is no surprise that he is being scouted by one of Italy’s top clubs.

According to Vocegiallorossa.it, Roma have their sights set on 20-year old River Plate winger Sebastian Driussi. To convince the Argentinian club to sell, Roma will have to meet the winger’s 10 million release clause but with his contract ending in June 2017, there is a high probability that they could get him for less. The Giallorossi are not alone though in their pursuit for the young Argentinian. TuttoMercatoWeb reports that Fiorentina have already presented an offer to River Plate for Driussi but at the moment, there have been no advanced talks regarding a transfer.

City Offer Mangala To Inter On Loan

Inter could inherit one of City’s center-backs on a loan stint next season as he is no longer considered in the club’s plans going forward.

€50 million later and Manchester City are figuring out how to offload their French central-defender, Eliaquim Mangala. As per France Football, the Frenchman is not expected to be included in Pep Guardiola’s project at the Etihad next season therefore City have proposed to loan out the 25-year old to Inter.

Mangala‘s price has dropped to around the €30 million dollar mark due to his lack of consistent performances and at that price, there are very little suitors willing to pay the aforementioned amount. With Inter seemingly close to losing Jeison Murillo, who is being courted by the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, Mangala would fill the gap left by the Colombian should he depart this summer.

Lazio have reportedly put a four-year contract offer on the table for the Brazilian left-back.

According to Sky Sport 24, Lazio have offered Barcelona left-back Adriano a four-year deal worth 2 million a season to lure him to the Olimpico. The 31-year old Brazilian defender still has a year left on his contract at the Catalan club but could be tempted to ply his trade in Serie A next season.

Lazio are also working behind the scenes to close out a deal for Pescara’s capocannoniere Gianluca Lapadula but it is believed that they have a stronger change of a signing off on a transfer for Adriano due to the limited playing time he has received this past season.

Azzurri Test 3-5-2 In 6-0 Win Over Fiorentina Primavera

Antonio Conte sticks to his preferred 3-5-2 formation as Italy, lead by an Insigne brace, hit six past the Primavera side in a friendly early today.

In a friendly encounter against Fiorentina’s Primavera side this afternoon, Antonio Conte fielded what could be viewed as a potential Starting XI come the first game of Italy’s group at the EURO. The Azzurri CT went with his trusted 3-5-2 set-up in a game of three halves versus the youth team. The Starting XI, as per TuttoMercatoWeb, was as follows:

Buffon;

Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini;

Candreva, Florenzi, De Rossi, Giaccherini, Darmian;

Éder, Pelle;

The first half ended scoreless, with both Florenzi and Giaccherini acting as the biggest threats going forward. Neither Pelle nor Eder were able to find the back of the net while linking up at top. Before the start of the second half, Conte made a number of changes with Marchetti replacing Buffon in goal, Immobile on for Éder, De Sciglio and El Shaarawy were brought in as the new wing-backs and De Rossi was now being supported by Bonaventura and Parolo. It is to be noted that Salvatore Sirigu was also subbed on but took over as Fiorentina’s goalkeeper. Below was the second half XI:

Marchetti;

Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini,

De Sciglio, Parolo, De Rossi, Bonaventura, El Shaarawy;

Immobile; Pelle

Midway through the second half, Antonio Conte made another five changes to his team. Rugani, Ogbonna and Astori all came in to replace the Juventus trio at the back. In the midfield, Jorginho took up the central role over Daniele De Rossi and Simone Zaza came on for Graziano Pelle as the new striker up front. Bonaventura, El Shaarawy and Zaza broke the deadlock and signed their names on the score-sheet to give Italy a 3-0 lead. A third half of 30 minutes was then to be played with more changes to the 3-5-2 being completed by Antonio Conte. Below was the final XI of the third half:

Sirigu;

Rugani, Ogbonna, Astori;

Zappacosta, Sturaro, Jorginho, Benassi, Bernardeschi;

Insigne, Zaza;

It was the Bernardeschi and Insigne show in the final half as the in-form Napoli winger struck home twice while both assists came from the former. Davide Zappacosta would also find the back of the net and Italy would conclude the game by cruising to a 6-0 win over their younger adversaries.

Azzurri, Sirigu: ”It Is An Honor To Back-Up Buffon”

Sirigu sees it as an honor being the vice-Buffon and plans to always be ready should he be called upon.

Highly likely to be selected as Buffon’s back-up at the upcoming EURO, Salvatore Sirigu addressed the media today in a press conference at Coverciano:

On possibly being the sole representative from PSG on the squad:

I hope to not be the only one because Thiago’s experience will be very useful. I do not know how fit he is but he has all the desire to be at the EURO.

On his role after a year of limited pitch time:

I think it is fundamental for me to do what I have done up to now. I haven’t played much but I always had to be ready. I have to always try to remain focused. That is how it was at PSG and I hope it will be like that if I am called for the National Team.

On his future:

I think that when you go through the type of year I had, the priority will go to other issues. I think for myself and for other goalkeepers to push aside the certainty that is Buffon is almost impossible but I am very happy with what I have done for the National Team. When I think of this journey, the honor of having played with Buffon will be greater than anything else. When you are in the National Team, it is important to play for a goalkeeper, it is different.
