Marco Amelia: ”Conte’s Mentality Will Fit With The Philosophy At Chelsea”

Marco Amelia chimes in on Antonio Conte’s arrival at Chelsea and believes the current Azzurri CT can reverse the fortunes of the club next season.

World-Cup Winning goalkeeper Marco Amelia might not have seen a single minute on the pitch for Chelsea this season but he has brought a wealth of experience to the Blues’ locker room. The former Azzurri International sat down with Corriere dello Sport and spoke about his experience in London while also giving his input on the impact Antonio Conte can have at Chelsea next season.

On how football is lived in England:

In a less exasperated way, there is great passion but limited solely to the games. If we can learn something from them, it is from the point of view of public order.

On how this season went at Chelsea:

I arrived at the beginning of the season where there was already some difficulty. It was difficult to recover points, especially this year with the amount of surprises. For a team that has won everything in the last few years, it is normal to have a psychological decline.

On his experience at Lupa Roma and Rocca Priora:

At Lupa, I was the honorary President. I helped them register for the season because if not, they would have gone bankrupt but there were problems with those who managed the club and then I left. I am glad I saved them and today, they are in good hands. At Rocca Priora, I wanted to give an opportunity to the kids to get closer to football.

On how the transfer to Chelsea came about:

After Courtois’ injury, I sent a message to Mourinho’s staff and he called me right away. I met him while at Milan, he immediately made a good impression on me. He told me to come to London and when they saw I was fine physically, they took me.

I did not go there to play, I was there in case of emergency. In eight months, I worked with two of the best managers in the history of football. I learned a lot and I am happy because I would like to become a manager.

On what type of person Mourinho is:

He has a contagious passion and a motivation that makes you want to give it your all.

On the player he related the most with:

I have a great relationship with everyone but John Terry was the first to welcome me into the locker room. He is a true captain and an example to all.

On who impressed him the most:

Willian. I realized in person that he is phenomenal. For me, Hazard is on the same level as Ronaldo and Messi. I remember watching him as a 17 year old in a match between Genoa and Lille, he left an impression on me.

On Antonio Conte signing with Chelsea:

I welcomed him after it became official. I found him very motivated and for now, he is focused on the EURO. He is a winning manager, and the group is already prepared to do what he wants. My teammates asked me about him but I have never worked under him.

On what people are saying in London about Conte:

Italians are very well regarded here in London. Everyone still remembers Zola, Vialli, Di Matteo, Cudicini, Ranieri and Ancelotti. They are all motivated for Chelsea to do well and immediately return to winning a championship. This year, all of England were living in an Italian world.

On how Conte will change Chelsea:

His winning mentality will fit well with the philosophy of the club. For him, results talk. The team is full of champions, we must work on the mind and on the psychological factors.

On the impact Leicester’s victory has had:

It was an incredible result. With Chelsea out, I rooted for Ranieri. It is a winning example of planning. It is a solid club on a economical level, who chose a manager with great experience. Ranieri has great merits both on and off the field. I complimented him when we played against each other.

On his plans for next year:

It still too soon. I will begin thinking about it in July. Meanwhile, I am happy to have had this experience. Calls have come in from Italy, both in Serie A and Serie B but if the opportunity arises, I would like to remain here and be a part of this project.
