New York City FC midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo says his move to Major League Soccer last year may have flushed his chances of making Antonio Conte’s Italy squad for next month’s Euro in France.
Pirlo, who just celebrated his 37th birthday on Thursday, believes playing in Major League Soccer could be a cause for his exclusion from the Azzurri’s final Euro 2016 squad.
The former Juventus regista is currently plying his trade in New York under rookie manager Patrick Vieira, with the MLS season in full swing unlike those competitive leagues across Europe. Pirlo told La Gazzetta dello Sport that while his move away from Italy may have put a damper on a call-up for La Nazionale, the Italian says he has no regrets about his move:
“When someone decides to come to the U.S., he knows what he’s getting into. I reflected on this and I knew what the risks were. It’s clear that anyone who plays in Belgium or another league with less quality still has a chance of making the Champions League or Europa League. And that’s what makes the difference.”
While he was left off last week’s provisional roster by manager Antonio Conte, the former UEFA Champions League winner with A.C. Milan still has hopes of making the trip to France:
“Conte has still not named the final squad. The players who are still playing in official games have not been called up. Sebastian (Toronto FC) and I talked to Conte about the decision. It’s still possible.”
Any chance Conte brings “il Maestro” with him to France?
