Welcome to Camp Conte: 23 players selected for France

Antonio Conte has made his selections, which have caused turmoil and confusion among the Calcio world. However now he must create a full roster ready to do battle.

During his time as coach of Juventus, the players considered Conte one of the most demanding managers they had ever played for. He should have been a drill sergeant, he was that tough during the summer training camps. Carlos Tevez told reporters when he first joined Juventus in 2013 that he had never experienced a training camp like at Juventus under Conte.

Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon, Salvatore Sirigu and Federico Marchetti.

Defenders: Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, Matteo Darmian, Mattia De Sciglio and Angelo Ogbonna.

Midfielders: Daniele De Rossi, Thiago Motta, Emanuele Giaccherini, Marco Parolo, Antonio Candreva, Federico Bernardeschi, Alessandro Florenzi, Stefano Sturaro and Stephan El Shaarawy.

Forwards: Graziano Pelle, Eder, Lorenzo Insigne, Ciro Immobile and Simone Zaza.

It’s not a glamorous squad list. It’s not a team filled with ‘without a doubt he should be there’ players. It’s a team that Conte knows he can get the best out of, whatever that may be. These players may not be the best as individuals, but for at least 270 minutes we know that there will be no shortage of effort from the eleven lions on the field.

Graziano Pelle and Eder have been the tandem most used under Conte’s command, the Lecce born forward has scored five goals in 12 appearances, while Eder has scored two goals in 10 appearances. Both of them have had their struggles at the club level, but they have played with each other quite a bit, and in the end that’s the reason why Conte has stuck with them.

In 2014, Italy had a team with better individuals, but the problem was then coach Cesare Prandelli couldn’t unlock the right combination on multiple areas on the pitch like he had in 2012. Antonio Conte on the other hand has had his core group of players ironed out for quite some time.

Of course there are shocking exclusions like Bonaventura, Jorginho, Pavoletti, Belotti and Giovinco. But in order for the Italians to do well in France, Conte will have to put 23 players on the same page and play as a team, not as individuals. Although we may not ever know the rationale behind each selection or exclusion, we have to (hope) know that Conte has made the best team possible.
