Today Antonio Conte held a press conference to discuss his latest selections and the overall mood at Coverciano.
Have you had a look at the opposition?
“We’ve prepared for all the games, we already have them in our minds having already studied them. In the coming days, we will look at all situations but we’ve already approached every game. Either the friendlies against Scotland and Finland or the three group games, we’re ready. My successor? I don’t see how this could affect me in any way.”
Will you be bringing four of five strikers?
“That’s one of the doubts left.”
What do you want to tell Tavecchio after these two years together?
“The President has proven to be capable of making good decisions in any situation. I was honored by his persistence to get me. He will always make the right choices for the national team.”
Are you worried or concentrated?
“I’m only very concentrated. To be worried is harmful and a manager must never transmit that to his players.”
Is the national team based on the blocco Juve?
“The defense surely is, it represents a guarantee for us and a good base to start from. I worked with these players for a lot of years and I hope they can help transmit positive values to the rest of the team. I’m hoping for a big push from their part.”
Have you had the chance to speak to Izzo? What do you think of the latest scandal?
“No, I haven’t been able to talk to him. They’re difficult situations and that’s all I’m going to add.”
Can Insigne play like Giovinco?
“Yes, they have similar characteristics. Even Giovinco played like a winger and Insigne can also play alone with another striker. I definitely see similarities between the two of them.”
Do the players in doubt know about their situation?
“No, no one knows nothing.”
What’s the strategy with Thiago Motta and Montolivo?
“Montolivo and Thiago Motta are here because we are not leaving up anything to chance. I need people who work to prepare them from all respects. It’s important that they recover quickly as we are in a situation where we can’t wait for anyone. We need people who are feeling well.”
Have you had to make tough decisions?
“There’s always tough decisions. I would have liked to take Acerbi and De Silvestri. Same thing with Soriano as he was with us all the time. But some choices had to be made.”
Do you have clear ideas going into the Scotland game?
“I know who to bring to the Euros in my head. There are at most three doubts. But the ideas are extremely clear.”
What adjective would you use to describe your national team? Have you been unlucky due to the many injuries?
“I asked my players to be dreamers. To dream of something nice and that’s possible. Fortune is definitely not on our side at the moment and we hope that this changes quickly.”
Will you be redoing last week’s tests today?
“The tests we do give us answers from a physical standpoint. It helps us understand what type of work every players needs. It’s an important factor but doesn’t decide who gets called up. We decided to play Scotland because they are very similar to Ireland. Finland, on the other hand, play like Sweden. These friendlies are played to understand what awaits us.”
Did you always know Pirlo and Giovinco weren’t getting the call?
“Andrea and I spoke. I needed to hear him and we sent people to the United States. However, we made other decisions and it’s normal that there are consequences when they opt to play there. We didn’t leave anything to chance.”
Will Insigne make the final 23-man squad?
“He’s in the 30-man roster, after this week the final team will be announced. I have little doubts in my head, I already have a list of 24 to 25. We will evaluate Montolivo and Thiago Motta’s conditions. Marchisio and Verratti’s injuries changed our situation a bit but we have to find different answers.”
Why Insigne and not Pavoletti?
“There are still cuts to be made. We arrived at this point also due to injuries in addition to technical and tactical choices. I chose players with my head and I’m trying to bring the best players. I know it’s difficult to have everyone agree with my decisions.”
