Today, Antonio Conte and Gianluigi Buffon held a joint press conference ahead of Italy’s clash with Sweden.
The following is the exact transcript from their press conference. Buffon and Conte took turns answering questions.
Conte on the upcoming clash:
“I have a group of determined players who wants to do good things. One single game doesn’t change their attitudes, I’m convinced of that. We had a good performance against Belgium but we haven’t done nothing yet. Our feet are on the ground, we’ve done nothing.”
Buffon on the similarities between the team from 2006 and today,:
“We won the first game 2-0 like ten years ago. The group is forging and is becoming stronger moving forward and getting results together. There was a desire from the first day at Coverciano to build chemistry. We were successful in 2006 because there was a commitment to unite from all 23 players.”
Conte on possible turnover:
“We’ve only played one game. There have been four days in which we can recover and train. I’ll evaluate their conditions until tomorrow morning. There are two ways to do this: One by looking at them and the other by talking to them. I repeat, we’ve only played one game. I think it’s excessive to talk about tiring. I don’t think I’ll make many changes.”
Conte on the lack of quality in the side:
“I’ll say that it wasn’t me to say that. Everyone is saying that, I didn’t only wake up this morning. It’s surely not a pleasant period for Italian football. There are a few problems. We need to see talents emerge. Having said this, we still must give our best. I don’t know whether to consider us a veteran squad, but these 23 players are our best. We have one month to give it our all.”
Conte on the tactical side of things:
“You have to attack the opposition, either in the defensive or offensive zone. They have Ibrahimovic, but they also have Berg or Guidetti who will be dangerous from dead-ball situations. When we evaluate the opposition we do it as a team so we can all see their defects.”
Conte on Ibrahimovic’s possible move to the Premier League as well as his:
“He’s really strong and can play in any league in the world. He can tip the balance in his side’s favour. We’re facing a Swedish side that is truly balanced with one star.”
Conte on Pellè’s growth over the years:
“Graziano’s story is a particular one. He had to leave Italy to make a name for himself. When he was in Italy, he’d never play. He was on the bench with Parma until he moved to Netherlands. Starting fresh gave him confidence. He worked really hard and is now a really good forward. He’s got physical capabilities. It’s weird that he had to leave Italy, where Italians usually have more problems. It shows his drive and will to confront obstacles.”
Buffon on Bonucci:
“His characteristics are evident. He’s our play-maker from the defensive zone. He knows how to pass the ball brilliantly. He has good feet that allow him to take risks and make difficult plays. He has the courage and the personality to do certain plays. He improved a lot defensively over the years.”
Buffon on Zlatan:
“We rate him highly as he brings luck to the teams he plays with. Sweden are not only Ibrahimovic but his talent is clear. Playing him will be a nice challenge for me. I remember his back-heel goal in 2004. It’s not a beautiful memory. At the moment, he was still a young talent and we were unsure what type of career he had in front of him. In the following 12 years, he showed his quality on many occasions. He repeated that same goal three or four times. It’s his specialty.”
Conte on his way of playing:
“We’re seeing extremely balanced games so far. Every game is a difficult one. For example, France only scored against Albania in the 90th and 95th minute. Despite the balance and the good preparation, we’ll need to do great things.”
Buffon on the blocco Juve and their mentality in defense:
“It definitely helps. With all the games we’ve played and the experiences we’ve shared, there’s always a particular feeling among ourselves. We’ve played together for many years which renders things easier.”
Buffon on the second game of the 2014 World Cup against Costa Rica:
“Historically, the second game has always caused us problems. We’re here to fix that. The start was comforting, perhaps we weren’t even expecting that. Our strength is that we know our limits, either on the field or preparing for the games. With the Swedes, if you play well you win. You play a good game, you draw. You play a poor game, you lose. They give you nothing.
