Despite the discouraging loss to the Republic of Ireland, Italy manager Antonio Conte sees positives from the players that haven’t played as much in the lead-up to today’s match.
As Conte spoke to Sky Sport following the match, Conte touched upon his assessment of the fringe players that featured in the match vs. Rep. of Ireland and the pitch quality:
“Tonight I was given the responses I was looking for, I have very little to rethink about the players that were used. The pitch was in favor of Ireland, it was a very physical match. The pitch was not in favor of whomever came to play football.”
Conte then elaborated more on the players’ performances:
“I had good responses from the players. I’ve played football, these types of games are never easy. I don’t feel I need to reevaluate any of the players, there was utmost effort given in today’s match from everyone in all phases of the match.”
Finally, Conte elaborated on his side’s upcoming opponent in the Round of 16:
“Spain? It was certainly not a fortunate draw for us, we will go up against one of the best squads in the world and there’s utmost respect. We have to think about letting our play do the talking, we have to give everything.”
