The Napoli forward is returning from a difficult ending to the Copa America but his brother and agent has sent a dire message to the club.
Nicolas Higuain was very clear on the fact that his younger brother Gonzalo will not be signing a contract extension, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Gonzalo won’t renew his contract with Napoli. The club is asking for the release clause to sell him. In any case, together with Gonzalo we’ve decided and agreed not to renew.”
The ex-Real Madrid forward was signing in 2013 from the Spanish side for over €38 million. Last season he scored 36 goals in 35 matches, breaking the all time record.
It had been previously reported that Higuain was a step away from renewing with Napoli, but it seems the deal has fallen through. In recent weeks, English sides Liverpool and Chelsea had coveted the striker.
Antonio Conte is a known admirer of the forward and could use him to springboard his side back into title contention.
