Italy v Ireland: Player Ratings

Today, Italy took on Ireland in Lille in the last game of group stages and lost by a score of 1-0.

Here’s how we rated their performances –

Goalkeeper –

Salvatore Sirigu (5.5) – Came in to give Buffon some rest and did an alright job. In what was a boring game, Sirigu made a few smart saves. He did, however, find himself in no man’s land one too many times and was let down by his poor judgement.

Defenders –

Andrea Barzagli (6.0) – Quiet game from La Roccia against a driven Irish side. Got beat bad on one occasion by McClean but was otherwise solid on the right hand side of the back three.

Leonardo Bonucci (5.0) – Inexplicably played this game despite being on a yellow card, the Juventus defender played a subdued role in this one. The former Bari man made one awful turnover in the game and didn’t look his usual, dominating self.

Angelo Ogbonna (5.5) – The former Torino man somehow made this roster over the likes of Daniele Rugani and Alessio Romagnoli and came into the lineup for Chiellini. Ogbonna looked his typical clumsy self throughout the game and never inspired confidence. Average.

Midfielders –

Federico Bernardeschi (4.5) – The Fiorentina man’s inclusion into the eleven was a highly anticipated one but he simply failed to deliver. Every time he got onto the ball, he didn’t look likely to create anything and turned the ball over on multiple occasions. Almost conceded a penalty late in the first half with a needless barge.

Alessandro Florenzi (5.5) – Florenzi will likely not look back at this game with particular fondness as the Roma man didn’t contribute anything of note to this game. While he did inject energy into the midfield, his end product was often lacking.

Thiago Motta (5.0) – Not Thiago Motta’s best game in an Italy shirt as he failed to impose himself on this game. Almost gifted Ireland a goal early in the second half with a giveaway in his own box. Forgettable evening from the Paris Saint-Germain man.

Stefano Sturaro (4.5) – As per usual, Sturaro demonstrated lots of heart and desire at the heart of the midfield but his lack of technical skill let him down. He was defensively solid but offered little to nothing going forward. His first touch let down the Azzurri faithful more times than Frank Ocean fans have been waiting for a new album.

Mattia De Sciglio (5.0) – The Milan man didn’t have the best of evenings in Lille and was largely ineffective going forward. Much like most of his midfield teammates, he had a quiet night in his own defensive third and will be happy with his contributions in that respect.

Forwards –

Ciro Immobile (5.5) – The striker went long periods of the game without seeing the ball and would have liked to get more touches in dangerous areas. His shot from outside the box that went wide was the highlight of his game, which says it all really.

Simone Zaza (5.5) – The former Sassuolo striker had a few decent touches throughout the game but like Immobile, he was starved for service. Almost found the back of the net with a thunderous volley but wasted possession on a number of occasions.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Matteo Darmian (5.0) –  Came on to the pitch for Bernardeschi and was barely visible. Anonymous performance from the Manchester United defender.

Lorenzo Insigne (6.5) – The diminutive Napoli play-maker came on with just under twenty minutes to play and injected some much needed creativity and life into the game. Hit the post with his second touch and did more than Immobile and Zaza did all game.

Stephan El Shaarawy (N/A): Came in with little under ten minutes to play and didn’t do anything of note. N/A.
