Italy mastered Spain and ended their winless run against the Furia Rojo dating back to 1994.
Buffon (8.0): Heroic. Absolutely and totally heroic from the man who celebrates his 160th international appearance with a tremendous win over our Mediterranean counterparts.
Barzagli (7.5): Had to deal with an onslaught from Nolito and David Silva today, but never blinked. Tremendous performance
Bonucci (7.5): Now that’s more like it from the central defender. A much improved performance today in respect to the one against Ireland. Wasn’t given the freedom to distribute but placed all the Spanish attackers firmly in his back pocket.
Chiellini (9.0): The battle hardened veteran defender player superbly against the Spanish onslaught and scored the go ahead goal in the 33rd minute. Total domination.
Florenzi (7.0): Worked hard all match long and had some good link up play in the Spanish half. Hard fought performance and was taken off in the 85th minute.
Parolo (6.5): A bit anonymous at times, but worked hard and ran more today probably than he ever has previously. He’s not a playmaker, he’s a workhorse in Conte’s stable.
De Rossi (8.0): Tiki-Taka who? He lasted only 52 minutes, but he played very well in that time. His fitness may be failing him, but he placed Iniesta firmly in no-mans land for the total duration of his time on the pitch.
Giaccherini (7.5): The stallion of Conte’s brigade. Never stops working, never stops running. He’s the oil between the gears for Italy’s machine.
De Sciglio (7.5): Started off slow, but grew into the game marvelously. Never stopped working, and delivered some excellent crosses as well.
Eder (6.5): Really should have had a few goals today, that one on one with David De Gea is borderline unforgivable.
Pelle (7.5): His ability to chest the ball down is such an asset to Conte’s gameplan. And in very similar fashion to the game against Belgium, he doubled Italy’s lead in stoppage time.
Substitutes
Thiago Motta (6.5): He picked up a yellow card which will see him suspended against Germany, but was tasked with patrolling in front of Italy’s defensive bloc. Did well, will be missed against the Germans.
Insigne (6.5): Provided an immediate injection of energy into the tiring Italian attack, placed a shot on target and nearly broke Pique’s ankles. Good cameo and a vital weapon off the bench.
Darmian (7.0): Replaced De Sciglio in the late going and delivered the cross to give Italy a 2-0 lead in stoppage time.
