Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci spoke to the media following the fantastic result against Spain and highlighted the path ahead.
In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, the veteran defender said,:
“Conte knows how to motivate his men for every game. This path began two years ago and has been fundamental. We are a national team without great talents. We had to form a team with a clear style of play. Conte is a maestro. We hope he’s as happy after next game as he is after this game. We are playing against the world champions, who have great individuals and are a great collective. Spain caused us problems when they pressed, we are a team, not just a group of players. We deserved to progress and play Germany.”
On the performance as a whole, he said,:
“One thing about this team is that we always want it. Today we demonstrated our hunger and sacrifice on the pitch. We played good football, as well. I think the fans were entertained watching two great national teams.”
Bonucci then elaborated on the strength of the group. The Italian international said,:
“We were able to create a great group and I think this is the secret of our national team. This isn’t merely a selection, but a team who are all pulling in the same direction. We were confident that if we played like we could we could have caused them problems. We prepared for this game perfectly, especially when not in possession. I struggled to remember a Spain being caused this many problems. Today was truly a great result but we have to recover ahead of the next game.”
On Thiago Motta’s second booking and suspension for the next game,:
“He’s a great player. We will miss him in the quarter finals but we will do everything to give him a semi-final.”
