Italians in England: How did they fare this weekend?

In our weekly feature, here on Italian Football Daily, we take a look at the weekend performances of Italian players currently based in the top two divisions in England.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Graziano Pelle (Southampton)

Graziano Pelle was unable to add to his seven league goals this season in Southampton’s 1-0 win away to Sunderland. Although he played the full game, Pelle was fairly subdued and was yellow carded late in the game for a pull back on Jack Rodwell.

Matteo Darmian (Manchester United)

Having picked up 5 bookings already this season, Matteo Darmian missed Manchester United’s 2-0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion through suspension.

Fabio Borini & Vito Mannone (Sunderland)

Fabio Borini came on as a second-half substitute in Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton. The former Liverpool striker had few opportunities save for a volley that went narrowly wide in the 88th minute as the Black Cats pushed for an equaliser.

Vito Mannone was an unused substitute in this fixture.

Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)

Angelo Ogbonna was an unused substitute in West Ham United’s 1-1 draw at home to Everton.

Alessandro Diamanti (Watford)

Alessandro Diamanti was a 76th minute substitute in Watford’s 2-1 defeat away to Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City. Despite several nice touches, he was unable to influence the score-line.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)

Sheffield Wednesday have been in excellent form recently, and were hoping to make it thirteen successive games without defeat. Alas, it was not to be for the Owls, as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic on Saturday. Once again, Fernando Forestieri was Wednesday’s star player, scoring their only goal in the defeat, converting a cross from the right-hand side by Kieran Lee into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

The defeat saw Wednesday drop to ninth place in the table, four points off a play-off place.

Diego Fabbrini (on loan from Watford) & Michael Agazzi (Middlesbrough)

Middlesbrough and Diego Fabbrini travelled to their Championship promotion rivals, Hull City, on Saturday hoping to continue their run of good form. Fabbrini played the full 90 minutes as ‘Boro fell to a 3-0 defeat, although he did create several opportunities that his striking partner, David Nugent, spurned in the first half. The defeat saw ‘Boro remain in fourth place in the league table.

Once again, Michael Agazzi did not feature in Middlesbrough’s squad for this fixture.

Mirco Antenucci, Giuseppe Bellusci, Marco Silvestri & Tommaso Bianchi (Leeds United)

Massimo Cellino’s Leeds United won their second successive game as they were comprehensive 3-0 winners away at local rivals Huddersfield Town and moved up to fifteenth place in the table.

Marco Silvestri and Mirco Antenucci and Giuseppe Bellusci all started the game, as new manager, Steve Evans opted not to change the team that beat Cardiff City 1-0 in midweek. Antenucci opened the scoring in the fifth minute of injury time at the end of the first half, stretching at full length to convert an excellent cross past the Huddersfield goalkeeper Joe Murphy.

Silvestre was largely untroubled in the first half but, after the break, made two excellent full-length one handed saves to keep the score 2-0 to Leeds. After a good performance against Cardiff City, Bellusci again put in a solid performance in front of Silvestre, as Leeds kept their second successive clean sheet.

Francesco Pisano (Bolton Wanderers)

Francesco Pisano was not included in Bolton Wanderers’ squad for their game against Bristol City at the Macron Stadium.

Gabriele Angella (Queens Park Rangers – on loan from Watford)

Gabrielle Angella was an unused substitute in QPR’s 0-0 draw against Preston North End.

Federico Macheda (Cardiff City)

Federico Macheda missed Cardiff City’s 2-0 home victory over Reading as he has still not recovered from surgery to repair a disc injury. The former Manchester United forward is likely to return to action towards the end of November.

Diego De Girolamo (Sheffield United)

In an attempt to gain some playing time, Diego De Girolamo has gone on loan to Second Division promotion hopefuls Mansfield Town. The Italy under-20 international did not feature in Mansfield’s FA Cup First Round fixture at home to Oldham Athletic as he is prevented from doing so under the terms of his loan agreement.
