Serie B Week 12 Round-up

It proved to be a very positive weekend for Cagliari, as the Rossoblu beat Modena whilst also having the extra pleasure of seeing closest rivals Cesena pick up a surprise defeat away to Latina and their new manager Mario Somma.

Meanwhile the Galletti of Bari now find themselves in third after their win against Salernitana on Friday evening. At the bottom Como continue to give up points from a winning position. Just above them the relegation battle looks set to be a humdinger this season as only four points separate 14th from 21st.

We start though with the aforementioned Bari and their match against Salernitana at the Stadio San Nicola on Friday evening. The match itself kicked off amid a sizzling atmosphere as the Bari faithful had the stadium rocking long before kick-off time.

To be fair to the Granata they also brought a sizeable away contingent who ably contributed to the sea of flare’s and fire crackers going off around the arena. To the match itself and it was the hosts who had their fans in raptures. As only seven minutes in a cross from deep left from Del Grosso found a completely unmarked Riccardo Maniero inside the box. From there the big striker exquisitely volleyed the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

As the match began to wear on both sides would have plenty chances although only one or two had the keepers at either end in anyway worried. Then with 20 minutes remaining Bari fans got that familiar sinking feeling as Salernitana drew level.

A corner from the right was headed on at the near post into the centre of the six-yard box where it was smashed home first time by Donnarumma. Bari need not have worried though as ten minutes later part two of the Galletti’s bald brigade Francesco Valiani (The other being Rosina) moved onto Guiseppe De Luca’s low cross from the left to side foot home and give Bari a massive win.

Onto Saturday and as mentioned earlier it proved a very good one for Cagliari as they beat Modena 2-1 at the Sant’Elia. Joao Pedro gave the Sardinians the lead on seven minutes. A scramble in the box eventually broke into the path of Pedro who made no mistake drilling the ball along the carpet into the left corner.

Despite Modena’s lowly league position, they were not about to roll over easily and more than put it up to their opponents. They were rewarded for this endeavour on 22 minutes when Stanco showed more determination than those around him to get his head on a corner from the left to equalise.

However, things would go pear shaped late on into the first half for the Gialloblu. First Joao Pedro would score his and Cagliari’s second racing onto a ball over the top before sliding it under the body of Provedel in the goal.

Then only two minutes later Popescu would be given his second yellow of the match for a needless obstruction down by the touchline. Modena were now presented with a mountain to climb for the second half. In the end though it would prove unassailable as Cagliari would go on to dominate the rest of the match without adding to their lead.

The win however does see them move three points clear at the top.

That is because Cesena went down to a 1-0 defeat to Latina at the Stadio Franconi. The only goal of the game coming 20 minutes from time as Daniele Corvia bundled home from only a yard out to give Mister Somma a win in his first match in charge.

Elsewhere Novara continued their relentless march up the table with a ruthless 4-0 win over Brescia another side who had been in decent form heading into the match. Evacuo gave the Azzurri the lead after only four minutes calmly sliding home after a great run and through ball by Gonzalez had set him up.

Gonzalez would prove pivotal again in Novara’s second after he was eventually brought down by Brescia keeper Minelli after a lung bursting run. The foul resulted in a penalty and the keeper being given his marching orders.

Evacuo then sent stand in Accari the wrong way to double the hosts lead. Two minutes later on 54 minutes it was 3-0 as defender Magnus Troest headed home a corner from the left. The rout was finally completed on 77 minutes when sub Andrej Galabinov poked home with his big toe. A great win for an on fire Novara side.

Livorno blew their chance to move closer at the top as they went down 1-0 at the Stadio Piola against Pro Vercelli. A Maicon own goal on 33 minutes enough to separate the two sides in the end.

Pescara were another side to suffer a surprising defeat as they lost 2-1 at home to Ternana. Falletti gave the Rossoverde the lead on 16 minutes tapping home from six yards out after some poor defending. Gianluca Caprari would draw the Delfini level on 26 minutes smashing home an indirect free from inside the box.

Both sides would then be reduced to ten men before Dugandzic would steal it at the death for the away side to give them an unexpected and precious three points.

Also around the league Trapani bounced back from four defeats on the spin in emphatic circumstances as they would beat Spezia 5-1 much to the delight of Serse Cosmi and his backroom team.

Vicenza beat Ascoli 3-0 at the Stadio Menti with the goals all coming in the first half courtesy of Cinelli, Raicevic and an own goal from Vita. Como threw away the lead twice away to Virtus Entella. Ganz opened the scoring for the visitors only for Caputo to reply for Entella.

Ganz would once more score for Como but Pellizzer would play spoiler this time levelling on 66 minutes. 2-2 it finished.

In the late evening match on Sunday the Grifone, Perugia had a 2-0 win over Virtus Lanciano. The final match of the weekend will take place on Monday night and see Crotone play hosts to Avellino.
