Italy, Buffon “We will continue to be humble”

Italy defeated Belgium by a score of 2-0 in their opening match of the 2016 Euro Cup tournament in France on Monday night with goals from Giaccherini and Pelle.

Italy captain, Gianluigi Buffon, was able to keep a clean sheet and after the match, spoke with Sky Sport.

Buffon: “I’m happy because we won and this is synonymous with intelligence, and because we know what is needed to be done on the pitch to at least put ourselves level with the stronger teams. We played our hearts out to go beyond the obstacle. We had a compactness that is hard to find in other teams. And the guys on the bench were crucial for us.”

Buffon on the mix of experience and youth in the Italian squad:

“In these competitions, those that are fortunate enough to have more experience should put it at the disposal of the group and of the younger guys to find ways to prevent them from being held to any larger liabilities. I would be happy to see those that are more experienced give 100% and the younger guys that manage to play with a healthy pinch of folly and lightheartedness. It’s the only way to get the best from everyone.”

The captain on tonight’s win and how the squad will move forward:

“But tonight, we also won with other ingredients: our organization, the will to suffer and luck because when you feel the trust of the group, even the crazy episodes will go your way. So, good for tonight, but we will continue to be humble because we do not have broad enough shoulders to take on responsibilities that are too big. We think this is not a costly victory, and from tomorrow we will begin to prepare for the match against Sweden just like we did for this match.”
