The Lega Pro to experiment next season with a new format for their Promotion Playoffs and Relegation Play-Out.
As announced via their official website, the Lega Pro has published the new rules and format to be followed on a trial basis for the 2016/2017 season. The automatic promotion of the top club from each group, along with the playoff winner, and the relegation of the last-place team per group, will remain unchanged.
Promotion Playoffs
Teams ending the domestic season in 3rd to 10th place in each of the three groups, will all clinch playoff spots. The winner of the Lega Pro Coppa Italia will earn a spot via a bye to the Second Round.
1st Round
24 teams will contest the first round with the higher ranked team earning home pitch advantage, in a single leg affair. The match-ups will be determined by the following:
- The 3rd place team will face the 10th place team
- The 4th place team will face the 9th place team
- The 5th place team will face the 8th place team
- The 6th place team will face the 7th place team
In case of a time at the of the 90 minutes, there will be no extra-time or penalty kicks. The team ranked the highest in the domestic table, will automatically be declared the winner.
2nd Round
16 teams will compete in the 2nd round of the playoffs. The 2nd place teams from each of the three groups, the 12 winners from the 1st Round and winner of the Lega Pro Coppa Italia, provided they are not the same club that capture the domestic title nor is a participant in the relegation play-out. In such a case, the last spot will be provided to the other finalist in the Coppa Italia or the third-best ranked team. The games will be played in a home-and-away format.
Final Eight, Semi-Final & Final
The remaining eight teams will contest the Quarter-Finals in a home-and-away tie. The Semi-and Final will be played over a single leg. In the case of a tie after the 90 minutes, extra-time will be played and if necessary, penalty kicks to decide the winner.
Relegation Play-out
The last-place team in each group will automatically be relegated to Serie D. The 2nd-to-last, 3rd-to-last, 4th-to-last and 5th-to-last teams will round out the play-out.
