With Miralem Pjanic’s exit looking more and more imminent, Roma now have the unenviable task of finding his replacement.
Among the names being considered to fill the void left by Pjanic’s likely departure is Alex Witsel of Zenit St. Petersburg. The 26 year-old developed a good working relationship with Luciano Spelletti when the two were together in Russia and Witsel would be happy to renew their partnership in Rome.
The biggest hurdle to overcome for now will be the financing of the transfer. Witsel should command a fee in the region of €20 million, money with which Roma are not in a position to part with at this stage.
As Gazzetta dello Sport reports, Roma’s transfer window can likely be divided into three stages. The first few weeks, until the beginning of July, will see those players surplus to requirements leave, whilst the next stage will see reinforcements brought in as part of the preparation for the Champions League qualifying rounds. In the event that Roma reach the group stages, the third stage of the transfer plan will see a big name brought in to start the season with a fully-enforced squad.
Axel Witsel would represent such a name, and, if Roma have a prudent run in the transfer market leading up to the Champions League qualifiers, he and Spalletti can hope that their good work can be resumed in the Eternal City.
