Dybala and Palermo: When lovers go their separate ways

The ex-Rosanero forward will return to the Stadio Renzo Barbera this weekend for the first time since completing his transfer to Juventus last summer.

Palermo have become the laughingstock of Serie A, or perhaps just Maurizio Zamparini who has pressed the self destruct button on another campaign. The Sicilians sit tied for 18th place with promoted Carpi and having changed coaches not once, not twice not… sevenbut an astonishing eight times. You read that right, Palermo have changed coaches 9 times, including 6 different men who have all received the same “you’re fired” notice from Zamparini.

The Order:
  1. Giuseppe Iachini
  2. Davide Ballardini
  3. Fabio Viviani
  4. Giovanni Tedesco/Guillermo Baros Schelotto
  5. Giovanni Bosi
  6. Giuseppe Iachini
  7. Walter Novellino
  8. Davide Ballardini

This weekend, it appears, although we can’t be too certain, that Davide Ballardini will be calling the shots from the touchline. The instability caused by Zamparini’s madness has completed negated the benefits of having players like Stefano Sorrentino and World Cup winning Alberto Gilardino in the locker room. This season should have been another year in the right direction for the Rosanero, even in spite of selling Paulo Dybala, there was hope at the beginning of the season that Palermo had restocked the talent pool and looked set for a comfortable mid-table finish, not a relegation zone brawl.

On the other hand, when Paulo Dybala makes his way back to the Barbera, he should receive a warm welcome and possibly a moment to reflect on the decision he’s made. Since joining Juventus, he’s quickly become an adored youngster by the Bianconeri faithful. In addition, he’s the youngest player in the top 5 European leagues to be directly involved in 20 goals this season. A very impressive statistic from the Argentina youngster.

In addition to that, Dybala has made his first few appearances with the senior Argentina side, who boasts household names like Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez. Truly a magnificent accomplishment for the 22 year old attacker.

So as the two cross paths today, Dybala and Palermo, the Argentine can look back and truly say that he made the right decision, and Palermo fans will ask why the fee their club received was not properly invested and why a return to Serie B seems more than likely.
