The Capital side distanced themselves further from rivals Inter and Fiorentina after a dramatic comeback late in the game against Torino.
Within 10 minutes of the final whistle, Roma, Inter and Fiorentina were all behind in their respective Serie A matches this evening. And within 5 minutes, something nearly so surreal happened in Rome that it can’t be fully described in words.
Francesco Totti, again, the hero in the late going of the game, scored twice in the 86th and 89th minute to give Roma all three points. The fans who had braved the less than spectacular weather were roaring, grown men weeping in the Curva, chants of “capitano eterno” rung out inside the Stadio Olimpico. If nearly two and a half decades of servitude for Totti’s hometown club wasn’t enough to win you over, tonight certainly did.
Totti also saved Roma blushes against Atalanta last weekend with a late goal that gave the Romans a crucial point.
Inter and Fiorentina were scuttled by Genoa and Udinese respectively, a massive blow in particular for the Nerazzurri who had to nearly win outright to have a chance at pipping Roma for the third spot.
With 4 games to go in the Serie A 2015/16 campaign, the Giallorossi opened up a seven point gap over third place Inter. Napoli should clinch a top 3 finish on the weekend.
In one of the most sensational comebacks of the year, Francesco Totti made Roma’s Champions League qualification all but a formality.
