The Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) has been confirmed among the few footballing federations to test the VAR (Video Assistant Referees) by FIFA’s International Football Association Board (IFAB)
On Friday April 8, IFAB, the body responsible for modifying football’s rules has confirmed its decision to experiment with enhancing the assistance of technology available to officials by introducing Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR).
Italy’s FIGC intends to be among the “Guinea Pigs” that will be used to test this technology.
FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio is putting pen to paper and ensuring that the appropriate documentation is provided to ensure that the trial will take place as of the 2016-17 season.
Before Italian football lovers get too excited (on either side of the debate), IFAB’s test will take place over two seasons: the first season – 2016-17 – VARs will be used, but will not be “live” (that is, they won’t affect officiating decisions), and in the second season, 2017-18, they will go “live”.
“We’ve supported technological support to officials from the outset – stated Tavecchio – and we believe that we have all the prerequisites to offer our contribution to this important experiment. Innovation will improve the entire system – game play fluidity and the centrality of the referee included – just as the positive adoption of the Goal Line technology has demonstrated”, as reported on FIGC’s official website.
