Why are we here? Are we alone in the universe? If God loves us, why do bad things happen? And why are Livorno such an embarrassing mess? Questions that have puzzled many an intellectual, and while we can make a stab at most of these one remains totally undecipherable, of course this is the Livorno question.
In the wake of their 2-1 loss to Novara this weekend, there 19th of the season, the Amaranto sit three points from safety and look no more likely to escape the drop zone than I do of getting a date with Margot Robbie. The defeat at the Silvio Piola also heralded in another managerial change, there fifth of the season, as veteran Franco Colomba was given the boot.
As for the match itself it would be the second week in a row that Livorno would lose deep into stoppage time. Paolo Farago gave the Biancoazzurri the lead on 11 minutes, stabbing home at the near post after a good initial move that had seen Pablo Gonzalez hit the post was quickly recycled and put back into the danger area.
Instead of wilting as they have done so often this season Livorno did hit back and if it wasn’t for the acrobatics of Francesco Pacini in the Novara net, first denying Francesco Fedato and then Daniele Vantaggiato, they would have been back on level terms.
Livorno would get there leveller on 65 minutes but not before they had already had one ruled out for offside. When the goal did come it came via the boot of substitute of Gianluca Comi sliding from about six yards out after a perfect low ball across the box from the right.
But just as they looked like they were going to hold onto a decent away point to promotion chasing Novara it all came crumbling down once again for the Amaranto. With 93 minutes on the clock a corner was swung in from the left, with Livorno unable to get it clear it bobbled around before falling to the feet of an unmarked Farago who made no mistake. Novara are seventh, Livorno are buying a one-way ticket to Lega Pro.
Trapani’s fantastic season continues apace as the Granata are now up to fourth after a crazy 4-3 win over Ascoli. Luca Pagliarulo gave the Sicilians the lead on 15 minutes after a corner from the left was flapped at by Ascoli keeper Ivan lanni. It was two on 29 minutes Nicola Citro converting the rebound after his own penalty had been saved by Ianni.
The Picchio however were far from out of it and on 37 minutes Serie B goal machine Daniele Cacia converted his own penalty into the bottom right sending the keeper the wrong way. Two minutes later and the sides were level Daniele Altobelli with a beautiful curling effort from outside the area into the top right corner.
That was how things would stay until the 70th minute when Adriano Montalto would restore Trapani’s lead after being afford time and space in the box to turn and finish into the right hand corner. Once again though Ascoli promptly hit back as 72 minutes Cacia once again drilled home from the spot.
Yet even with that we were not finished as with nine minutes left Trapani took the lead for the final time Luca Nizzetto clinically finishing low and hard into the corner from just inside the area. 4-3 it finished, Trapani dream of Serie A, Ascoli continue to look over their shoulders.
Crotone’s coronation was put on hold for another few days at least after they were only able to draw 0-0 at home with Spezia on Friday evening. Cagliari meanwhile moved back within three points of the Squali after they demolished Brescia 6-0 at the Sant’Elia.
Marco Capuano got the ball rolling on four minutes glancing home a free kick from the left, Joao Pedro made it two from the spot on 24 minutes. Pedro was at it again just past the half hour mark heading home from a few yards out.
Pedro completed his hat-trick on 47 minutes with his best finish of the three coolly bending home from a difficult angle. Niccolo Giannetti got in on the act on 63 minutes to make it five, before Marco Sau rounded off the scoring on 88 minutes after a nice free flowing move.
Bari remain third after they dispatched bottom club Como. It would take a while for the Galletti to get going however as they would have to wait till the hour mark to break the deadlock. George Puscas with the opener after Simone Scuffet was only able to push an initial effort back out into the danger zone.
Jacopo Dezi then made it two on 68 minutes latching onto an excellent through ball by Alessandro Rosina to finish with aplomb. Rosina himself rounded off the scoring on 79 minutes with a spectacular effort from just to the right outside the area, definitely a contender for goal of the week.
That being said Gianluca Lapadula’s 77th minute winner for Pescara over Cesena at the Adriatico will take some beating. The Serie B top scorer and reported Leicester and Juventus target with a sublime bicycle kick to seal the three points for the Delfini.
Meanwhile Virtus Entella’s remarkable season continues after they beat another of the leagues crisis clubs Modena 1-0 in Chiavari. Francesco Caputo with the only goal of the match on 20 minutes. Perugia kept their slim play-off hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Avellino at the Renato Curi. Robert Aguirre and Nicola Belmonte with the goals in either half for the Grifone.
Back down the bottom of the table, Vicenza continue their resurgence with a 2-1 win at the Romeo Menti against Ternana. Ebagua and Alessio Vita with the goals for the Biancorossi, Felipe Avematti with a stoppage time consolation for the Rossoverde.
In the last two matches of the weekend it was draws all round as Latina v Virtus Lanciano finished 2-2, while Pro Vercelli and Salernitana was 1-1. All four teams remain deep in the relegation mire.
Serie B returns mid-week, with a full schedule of matches as the season reaches breaking point for many.
