Serie B Week 37 Round-up

For those of you who read the most recent weekend edition of the Serie B round-up, you will no doubt remember that I had some rather harsh and disparaging words for Livorno. A club who I said have as much of a chance of escaping the relegation zone as I do of getting a date with Margot Robbie.

Well barely 48 hours on from writing that piece Livorno did something rather incredible, they went and won a match, against another team with real players and everything. What’s more the God’s contrived to give the Amaranto another boost, in the wake of yesterday’s fixtures Virtus Lanciano were handed a five-point penalty for financial irregularities. This drops the Frentani right back into the relegation mire, something they had looked to have escape only a few weeks prior.

All this together means that Livorno, a club surviving with a minimal pulse for most of the season have been handed a massive lifeline. More importantly though it means something much better that is bound to happen as a result, *cough* Margot I await your imminent phone call.

Back to Livorno and perhaps more importantly Daniele Vantaggiato, the veteran hitman proving as he has so often in the past to be pivotal for the Amaranto. It was his 11th goal of the season (Just less than a 1/3 of their goals in the league this season) from the spot on 41 minutes that gave them the crucial win over fellow relegation rivals Latina. The road to survival is still long and treacherous but at least Livorno have seemingly managed to find the road after much stumbling in the dark.

Switching attentions back to the top of the league and to Crotone, the squali had the chance to achieve promotion this mid-week if they overcame Cesena at the Manuzzi and other results went their way.  Instead rather sportingly from the Calabrians they kept things interesting for another few days at least, who wants to get promoted away from home anyway.

Cesena who sit sixth as a result of this win took the lead on 13 minutes, Camillo Ciano with an absolutely delectable free kick from just outside the area into the top left corner that had Alex Cordaz just staring in wonderment in the goal.

Ciano doubled that lead on 33 minutes drilling home from about seven yards out after a low ball across from the right had bounced back into his path. Crotone would squeeze their way back into the match just past the hour mark when Ante Budimir pounced for his 15th goal of the season. In the end though Cesena would hold on for the three points. As for Crotone they won’t overly mind because as already mentioned it gives them the chance to get the job done in front of their own fans at the Scida at the weekend.

Even with the defeat Crotone still remain two points clear at the top after we were promoted at Christmas and don’t need to try any more Cagliari only drew 1-1 away to bottom club Como. The Rossoblu would take the lead three minutes before the break thanks to 20-year-old Alessandro Deiola. Finishing neatly after a corner from the left hand side.

Six minutes past the hour mark however a Como side who are more than likely budgeting for Lega Pro next season drew level. Alessio Cristiani drifting in at the back post unbeknownst to his would be marker to stab home a cross from the left hand side.

With games fast running out Cagliari still look reasonably comfortable in second but stranger things have happened. Como meanwhile are trying to remember the road to Salo and Pavia for next season.

Bari are the side who sit in third for a second consecutive match day, an achievement in itself this season. In truth it has been a rather odd season for the Galletti, despite their rather lofty league position it feels as if at times Bari’s season has been on the brink of going somehow wrong. Despite this feeling that they seem to give off, on paper it has been quite a good campaign for the Puglian outfit with the potential still to get even better.

There latest win came away to Ascoli with a solitary goal on 31 minutes being enough to get them over the line in the end. Davide Cinaglia inadvertently putting the ball in the back of his own net as he intercepted an attempted bicycle kick at goal.

Just behind Bari are the only team on the island of Sicily who have seen their stock rise over the course of the campaign, Trapani. Serse Cosmi’s men picked up their 17th win of the season away to Avellino on Tuesday evening. Mirko Eramo gave the Granata the lead on five minutes with a fine finish at the near post, steering a low cross from the left into the roof of the net.

The second goal would also come early but in this case in the second half. With the clock on 52 minutes Gennaro Scognamiglio would powerfully head home a free kick from wide on the left. Trapani would then miss a penalty to make it 3-0 but it was not to worry. As the game was finally put beyond doubt on 74 minutes when Bruno Petkovic lashed home a free kick from about 27 yards out. Luigi Castaldo would pull one back for the Lupi with 12 minutes remaining but it was too little too late.

Back down to the bottom of the table and Modena who helped easy their relegation woes with a 3-0 home win over Perugia. Pablo ‘El Diablo’ Granoche, a man who they have sorely missed this season doing all the damage as he helped himself to a hat-trick.

Goals from Gaby Marilungo and Federico Francesco helped Virtus Lanciano to the win over Novara. The joy of that victory though has been dampened however by the news this afternoon that they had been docked five points for dodgy book-keeping.

The remaining matches of the mid-week saw wins for Pescara and Brescia to Spezia and Virtus Entella respectively. While the final two matches between Ternana and Pro Vercelli plus Salernitana and Vicenza ended in draws.

Only five matches now remain in what has been a pulsating Serie B season.
