Inter surpass Napoli, continue march towards 3rd place

Inter beat Napoli 2-0 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Saturday night, propelling them to within 3 points of Roma.

Tonight was an excellent evening from the Nerazzurri as they demonstrated to be able to beat and contain second place Napoli at home in front of a crowd of nearly 54 thousand spectators. Napoli tonight gave a huge favor to not just Inter but also to Roma as the Giallorossi look to claim the runner up spot in Serie A.

Inter deployed what appeared to be a modified 4-4-1-1 with Jovetic and Icardi in advanced roles in front of a midfield comprised of Perisic, Kondogbia, Brozovic and Medel. Coach Roberto Mancini set his team up to counter against the Neapolitans knowing very well that the guests would be able to maintain large spells of possession. Napoli have 4 of the top 5 passers in the league and Mancini anticipated that the only real opportunity his side would have to score would be to counter.

And that’s what they did, and it didn’t take long. In the fourth minute of play Gary Medel chipped a ball over the top to Mauro Icardi who then chipped goalkeeper Pepe Reina to open the scoring. This goal however did not come without controversy as it appeared Icardi was a few centimeters offside.

On the stroke of halftime Icardi would find Marcelo Brozovic on the counter who then again chipped Pepe Reina to double Inter’s lead.

From there on Inter would continue to frustrate Napoli and eventually maintain the cleansheet. Manolo Gabbiadini failed to be a reference point in attack for his midfield, another sign that the Italian will not partake in this summer’s Euro 2016, as he did not impress the present Azzurri coach Antonio Conte. However, he was not the only Italian who did not live up to expectations as Lorenzo Insigne was subbed off in the 50th minute due to failing to make an impact on proceedings.

Inter’s lone Italian, Danilo D’Ambrosio performed flawlessly on the right side, making runs to support Perisic and cause havoc for both Ivan Strinic and Faouzi Ghoulam of Napoli.

The Nerazzurri will take on Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Wednesday in what will be another must win match for the Serpente. While Napoli will fall back to the San Paolo to take on Bologna.
