Spalletti lauds his men, but calls for tough decisions ahead

In the wake of the giallorossi’s win over second-place Napoli, Roma coach Luciano Spalletti lauds his men as they pursue to leapfrog the Partenopei in what would prove to be an amazing feat

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti spoke to media after an important win that keeps his side in hot pursuit of second place. Here are some highlights of his post-game statements:

“We have dug deep to give it our all. We found a Napoli side that is in good shape. They are really good with possession, and in the second half we played too far back. However, we have stayed united and we suffered even though we created some scoring chances – in the end we won deservedly. It’s more satisfying because we have made a statement: we can take significant steps now”.

On Totti, Spalletti said: “Francesco is useful even for 15 to 20 minutes. He’s excellent in turning over the play and he carries the fans’ support which he transmits to the team, giving an important contribution. The team benefits from this – even though he only played a few balls he makes a difference”.

Roma made a significant dent in Napoli’s stranglehold of second place: “With so few games remaining in the season it’s difficult to leapfrog them. When I came it was hard to think that this was possible. I wouldn’t have expected it but the boys have made themselves available to me and earned everything they have with each passing game and practice. We need to acquire better players even though we’re a good side as is. Over the course of the season one has to look at this roster objectively and make some tough decisions for the sake of growth”.

Roma’s win clinched Juventus’ fifth scudetto: “When we went to Turin we lost deservedly, I’m also to blame for that. I tried to give the team an outline, they listened to me, but we stayed too far back. Juventus seems like an incredible team, one needs to play against them in order to fully appreciate their value. They have changed their formation, men, but whatever Allegri proposed was understood – I think they’re very strong, the gap between them and us is not easy to address”, concluded the giallorossi‘s coach.
