Foggia pay the price for the disruptive actions of their supporters and are sanctioned by the Lega Pro.
The Lega Pro’s Sporting Judge dealt a heavy blow to Foggia after their incidents which took place during their 2nd-leg against Pisa in the Promotion Playoff Final. An official statement was released on the matter, via TMW:
- Prior to the beginning of match, upon entering the pitch, Foggia supporters launched half-full and a few full water bottles, with one of them striking a Pisa player, without consequences
- During the warm-up, more objects including full water bottles were thrown and one of them struck Pisa’s fitness coach, without consequences.
- In the 20th minute of the 2nd half, Foggia supporters continued to throw half-full and full water bottles onto the pitch, with one of them striking Pisa manager Gennaro Gattuso. He then required medical attention after being hit. Play was halted and both clubs were left in a state of confusion as to why this was taking place. Meanwhile, a flare was thrown near the Pisa goalkeeper, and smoke bombs began raining down onto the pitch.
- The match official suspended play for around 10 minutes and during this time, Foggia supporters attempted to force their way onto the pitch but were rejected by security and law enforcement.
- At the final whistle confirming Pisa’s promotion to Serie B, Foggia supporters once again continued launching objects, with a water bottle striking the head of a Pisa player heading towards the locker room. The player required medical attention.
Due to the incident which affected the safety of the Pisa staff, players and supporters, along with interrupting the match causing a delayed suspension of time, Foggia were hit with the following sanctions:
- €15,000 fine
- Must play the first five home games of the 2016/2017 Lega Pro season, behind closed doors.
