What do the teams in first, second and third of Serie B have in common, answer they all begin with the letter C. However, it is the one spelt C-E-S-E-N-A that will be the happiest after the mid-week round of Serie B after they picked up the win while those around them dropped points.
Regular readers of the column will know that it usually starts off looking over the first match to be played in the said rounds action, however seeing as Novara and Pescara was postponed last night due to dense fog that is not a possibility. So what better place to start than with the side who went into the match day sitting top aka Crotone.
The Rossoblu were facing Brescia at the Ezio Scida and while the result did not turn out as desired they remain top by a point nonetheless. It wasn’t all bad for Crotone they did manage to pick up a point, but it could and probably should have been oh so much more.
The Squali took the lead on 43 minutes through Ricci. A shot from outside the box was spilt by Minelli in the Biancoazzurri goal, Ricci was then first on the scene to tap home. A fortuitous goal that also had a hint of offside about it but they all count.
While not the most spectacular of goals it looked to have got the job done for the hosts, that is until four minutes from time when a ball into the box was not dealt with by the Crotone defence and it eventually rolled into the path of Abate who made no mistake to capture a point for his side.
The side in second Cagliari came into their match against Perugia at the Renato Curi knowing that any slip-up by Crotone and they had the chance to go top. Yet while things were going their way down in Calabria the same cannot be said for their match against the Grifone.
Similar to Crotone though the results was not calamitous as they did manage to come away with the point after the match finished scoreless. Both sides though can feel as if they could had won the match with Perugia coming the closest after a deflected effort hit the post and rolled wide in the first half.
As for the aforementioned Cesena they came out of match day ten smelling of roses after their three-one home win over bottom side Como. Milan Djuric opened the scoring for the seahorses after 12 minutes, controlling a low cross from the left before swivelling on the spot and firing past Scuffet in the goal.
Luca Garriatano made it two on 29 minutes, finding himself completely unmarked in the box he picked up the cross from the right and even had time to slip before blasting past the helpless Scuffet. Como did come out with more purpose in the second half and pulled one back through Bentivegna on 52 minutes. In fact, Como had plenty of chances to draw themselves level but they paid dearly for their lack of composure in front of goal.
In the end it wasn’t to matter anyway as in the last minute of normal time Camillo Ciano scored a splendid third driving it into the top right hand corner from the edge of the box to cement the win for Cesena.
While most people were concentrating on matters towards the top perhaps the best match of the round took place in the most unlikely of places as Virtus Lanciano hosted Salernitana. Massimo Coda gave the Granata the lead on six minutes with his first of the season drilling low and hard into the bottom right corner.
Coda then popped up with his and Salernitana’s second on 13 minutes, this time latching onto a poor defensive header to steal in and divert the ball home. Lanciano though weren’t out of the game and on 26 minutes Antonio Piccolo pulled one back for the Frentani, steering home the rebound after the initial effort had been saved.
The second half continued with chances for both sides but it was Piccolo and Lanciano who would score again this time via the penalty spot on 51 minutes. That was the way it would finish in what proved to be an entertaining encounter by two sides in the lower reaches of the table.
Avellino finally got back to winning ways with a fine three-nil demolition of Ascoli. Mokulu opened the scoring for the Lupi six minutes before half time with a fine towering header from a corner swung in from the left.
Two minutes later veteran ace goal poacher Francesco Tavano pounced to make it two with a lovely composed finish into the bottom right corner. For all intents and purposes it looked as if he effortlessly passed the ball home but in truth it was much more difficult than that.
Seven minutes into the second half the result was put beyond doubt when Gavazzi fired home from outside the box. A big win for Avellino and maybe just what they need to kick start their season.
Meanwhile Bari picked up the win at the Silvio Piola against Pro Vercelli thanks to a solitary goal by Rada seven minutes into the second half. Ternana had an impressive two-one away win against ten man Latina. An expertly taken free kick by Furlan curled up and over the wall and into the top left just past the hour mark was enough to divide the two sides.
Elsewhere Modena and Spezia played out a one all draw at the Braglia. Both sides had chances to win it but were let down by their finishing at the crucial moments. Vicenza heaped further misery on Trapani as they fell to their third defeat on the bounce. Goals by Giacomelli in the 20th minute and Gagliardini on 24 minutes were enough to give the Biancorossi the win. De Vita did pull one back for the Granata five minutes from time but it proved too little too late.
Finally, Virtus Entella and Livorno played out a scoreless draw in Chaivari
There won’t be much time for sides to reflect on tonight’s results as they now must turn their attention to the weekend. For us the viewers however things just continue to get more exciting.
