After moving to Manchester United, Matteo Darmian has managed to settle into life in the Premier League nicely and has developed into one of the team’s more reliable defenders.
Matteo Darmian is one of Italy’s finest full-backs and the former Torino star has been incredibly consistent throughout the opening stages of the season. Earlier this year, the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself to Darmian as 13-time Premier League champions Manchester United contacted him regarding a move to Old Trafford.
Four months on, he’s now strutting his stuff for the Red Devils in front of a sell-out 75,000 capacity crowd on a weekly basis – an incredible achievement.
There’s no denying Darmian’s talent, in fact he boasts quality in both defence and attack. While his primary position is full-back, the Italian is more than capable of causing problems for opposing defenders and loves to bomb forward and support his team-mates in attack.
Defensively, he’s as reliable as anybody in the Premier League – an opinion which is testimony to just how quickly he has settled into life at Old Trafford. In fact, he’s probably been the most consistent player in United’s squad during the early stages of the campaign and was named as United’s Player of the Month in August.
Perhaps the one attribute that Darmian still hasn’t quite mastered is discipline in the English game. When it comes to picking up red and yellow cards, he is a bookmakers’ dream. In fact, he was valued below evens with Betway to pick up a yellow card in each of United’s last two fixtures – a statistic that shows just how poor his discipline is at times.
Darmian has managed to get to grips with English football in recent weeks but was shown a number of cards earlier in the campaign. He has also been caught persistently fouling opposing players at set-pieces and Louis van Gaal must ensure that his primary right-back doesn’t give any cheap penalties or dangerous free-kicks away.
At Torino, Darmian stood out for his incredible defensive efforts and unique ability to outwit opposing attackers with his intelligence. In England, he’s had to adapt quickly to a much simpler brand of football.
Darmian’s speed has certainly helped him to stand out at Manchester United but his sheer footballing ability enables him to regularly impress both the supporters and manager at Old Trafford. If he continues in this vein, he will have a long and successful career at the Theatre of Dreams in the future.
